Officiating

Shoulda won that one, and I'm not going to excuse the poor play, but the officiating DID cost Iowa the game. If that game is called like the majority of college bball games are- like hacks are hacks and shoves are shoves and flops are flops- the Hawks benefit much more than Sparty. The two bad calls down the stretch were the difference. Someone look at the tape and make the case that White actually made contact that affected the flight of the three ball. Someone show us a more blatant flop than the McCabe play.

We lost because we are not a good team. Good teams make free throws and don't make stupid turnovers.
I'm not sure who is "your team" but Iowa is a very young team that gets better game by game.

Iowa still needs to get tougher and stop silly, un forced turn overs. If so they beat Sparty by half a dozen and would have beaten IU a week ago.

IOWA is BACK

Officiating is not why Iowa lost this game..making one basket over a 12 minute stretch and 18 turnovers is why they lost.

That said, this league needs to change the amount of mugging they allow in basketball...both ways. It's just not fun to watch...they need to change it as opposed to wearing it like some badge of honor.

There were some bad turnovers but this is far from a bad team. Bad teams don't hang with the top teams in the country. If we were able to shoot any FTs in the first half it would have changed the game. Could say that about a few areas of this game.

Do the Big Ten Conference officials instruct/review/advise the officiating crews on what they expect to be called by way of fouls? It seems to me that the lack of consistency from game to game is one of the biggest problems. Is there a standard, and do the refs get graded after each game? The coaches and players deserve to have a certain level of expectation going in to each game as to what they can/can't do. If there is a standard and the refs aren't meeting it, they should be warned and the suspended. If there isn't a standard, there needs to be one, and then make the refs accountable to it.

...does not decide games, or very very rarely does. As a washed up athlete that used to react to calls, there is no reason to even react at all. It was called, move on.

They blew a 12 point lead in the first half and had multiple possession leads late in the game. Officiating didn't make the difference, the difference was the fact that they failed to avoid turning the ball over, failed to slow them down in transition, and didn't get it done on the glass. They failed to do the things that got them the lead in the first place. While officiating was atrocious the fact is that if they take care of the ball, defend, and rebound then MSU is in a position where they have to fould and its no longer a "judgement" or "no call" from the zebras. IMO the game was called constistently bad the entire 40 minutes of play. Iowa failed to adjust to what was/wasn't being called and MSU took advantage of it.

Officiating certainly didn't help matters, but it wasn't the difference in the game.

One of the positives I took from the game was that perhaps McCabe has FINALLY snapped out of his funk. If he can return to last year's form, things will open up for this team going forward.

I don't belive McCabe's true talent level is a 45% 3 point shooter that you saw last year. He only shot 49 three point shots last year making 22 of them. he has shot 50 3 point shots this year and has made 15 of them for a 30% rate. His Freshman year he shot 84 making 24 for a 29%.

I would say McCabe is probably about a 35% shooter from 3 just looking at this shot.

At his current rate he would be on pace to shoot 45 more three point shots this year and I would expect him to make about 16 of them.

i do wonder if Delany and the other B10 brass are happy that the B10 is a "rough" league. they must be. some like that style of play. i personally do not. and it's pretty obvious that we don't have the players right now to play that style. outside of McCabe, no one strikes me as "tough" on our team.

This is the same terrible type of officiating that helped drive lute olson to the pac8-10-12. The last 8 minutes of the first half was ugly

In the NBA, don't they fine players for flopping? The flop against McCabe did have an impact on the game. In the NCAA I feel they should be able to go to the monitor and review the call to see if it was a flop. Then reverse the call, giving a foul to the player who flopped, give free throws, and then also give the ball back to the offensive team after the two free throws.

This rough style of play and the poor officiating letting it go, not calling all the bumping, hand checking and slapping always hurts the b1g 10 in tourney play too. They get in the ncaas and nit and different crews clobber them with foul calls. Just review the Iowa loss to Toledo in 79 or 80 under Olson.

ONce the refs let sparty do anything they wanted the game was almost unwatchable (the hawks errors and bad passing didnt help).

This is why I can't understand why the conference doesn't do more to curb that.
