Officiating Question

Questions in regards to stopping the clock when a player goes out of bounds.

When we used our final timeout I thought the NW RB went out of bounds which would have stopped the clock. Why was the clock not stopped?

On the final Iowa possession Mitchell caught a pass and went out of bounds yet the clock ran.

I was at the game so perhaps it was discussed on the telecast but just curious what happened on those 2 plays in regards to the clock.

i honestly don't know. i thought that unless the ball carriers forward progress was stopped prior to going out of bounds, then the clock remained stopped until the next snap. on that play, the ball carrier was hit from the side, but was still moving forward when he went out of bounds. i think the officials incorrectly started the clock. but i don't really know the exact rule on that.

I'm not completely certain, but I think the new rule was that it doesn't stop outside of the last two minutes of each half. Mitchell went out of bounds at 2:05; thus the clock rolled. I rewatched it to be sure. Sad face.

I knew that rule but I thought there was less time. Guess not.

It also appeared the clock didn't stop after out last first down.

It stops to move the chains, but the ref started the clock about as fast as he could; in fact he barely had the ball spotted before starting the clock. I just rewatched and the chains hadn't been set yet. The offense hardly had time to get up to the ball.

The only thing worse than the officiating yesterday was Iowas play. As bad as they were, we can't blame this one on the refs

Well I will say the refs might have been worse as I have seen 250 or so games in kinnick and the level of bad calls and some blatant holding by NW that was not called was amazing.

The missed or bad calls were so in the open that every one could see them. The whole east grandstand fans saw Jewell get held on the disputed pass to the sliding Carr in the northeast corner. Jewell was blitzing or spying on thorson and easily had the edge when a hand and arm grabs his outside shoulder , terrible officials, should be reprimanded and suspended.

But you are right Iowa didnt block real well in run game (hard to when you dont force their safeties back) and the tackles got owned in pass blocking, our safeties on the other hand are coached to play too deep and are not even in on many plays along with giving up too many yards.

It did not look like a push out to me. It looked like his own momentum carried him out. This is just one of many bad calls in a game that was called to favor one team.

On the long touchdown, Jewell was in position to make the play and was held too. It was a quick hold but it was enough to prevent him from making a tackle.a

Officiating cost Iowa the game yesterday. It frequently stopped our momentum, and gave NW momentum. The no call on the blatant facemask on CJ followed by the officials calling one on Iowa literally two plays later about made me blow a gasket. Then to top it off they called a bullshit unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Iowa. The NW touchdown where the player was clearly out of bounds before possessing the ball about made me blow a gasket. The pass interference on Iowa that was an exact replica of the pass interference on NW that wasn't called about made me blow a gasket. The complete lack of any penalties called on NW was a joke. This is the second time in three games that the opposing team has been called for only ONE penalty. That is blatant bias against Iowa. The officials from the NW game need to be reviewed and suspended. I was hoping some of the items being thrown on the field would have hit those cheating fucks in the face.
