Official visits?

I can understand if Ulis was put to sleep by the football game, but the silver lining is he is a basketball recruit.

If he were to choose the Hawkeyes, it would be nice if he would do it sooner than later for gathering teammates which compliment him. A SF who knows Ulis is on board would be more likely to sign.

Ulis is visiting MSU and Kentucky both in the next week or so. He has already said that he will not be giving a verbal to UK on his visit and I would imagine the same would hold true for MSU.

It looks like him and his dad are taking their time with this and want to discuss everything once the officials have been taken. The longer the process draws out, the better for Iowa IMO.

I hadn't heard that he'd said he wouldn't commit during any visits. I like our chances more if that's the case too. He's not going to get all wide eyed and star struck and commit to Calipari just because he reaches out to shake his hand. I'm still surprised by KY being in the mix for him. Whens the last time they offered a 4 year type of player not to mention PG. I don't see Ulis being one and done or even 3 and done to go to the NBA. But I do think he'll be a hell of a college PG whatever program he ends up playing for. I think he wants to go to MSU but he doesn't want to be one of 2 pgs coming in the same class. And MSU just like what Iowa did with Gesell and Sapp seems to want to do that. If MSU would give him an assurance of that I think he would have already committed there. I think that tells you what kind of a recruiter Izzo is. That's something I could see Calipari and alot of other coaches flat out lying about. I think Izzo has been playing it strait with him in that regard and Ulis is just taking his time and weighing everything out. It's crazy to think that a 5'8 140 lb pg recruit is such a huge deal right now with this program but on the national platform outside of making the big dance this yr and making some noise that way. Getting him would be a huge huge deal for the way the nation sees the Iowa program

First I have heard that MSU wants two PG's in this class.

It has been confirmed that Izzo said he would not take both Jones and Ulis if they wanted to commit.

Where would you go if you were in his shoes? It would be a huge pickup for Fran and set a new trend for the basketball program. My son just graduated from high school last year and one of his friends is an All-American rated wrestler. Guess where he brags about going as he puffs his chest and he chin up in the air? Yep, he is going to be a Hawkeye. It's going to be difficult for Fran to compete against programs like MSU and Kentucky just as it is for other wrestling schools to go up against Iowa because of Iowa's reputation for being the BEST. If Fran pulls it off then I say give that man some of KF's salary. I am not saying it isn't possible but the odds are not in our favor.

This may be true. But if so, why is Iowa even still in the picture? Why isn't it just between MSU and UK? The Ulis camp has been up front in saying how much they admire Fran's forthrightness, loyalty, and style of play. I think his actions say that the star power definitely is a factor but not the only one for Ulis and his dad. Even if we don't get him, it is obvious that players like him consider us maybe not on the highest level of programs but back in the national picture. If we're the right fit, we can compete.

I may be wrong but I thought I read somewhere that we were the first ones to recruit him. So advantage Iowa in that regard. Depending on the mindset of the recruit that could be a really important factor to him. That's what I am hoping for. Now if you are talking tradition and recent program success then the advantage falls into Kentucky's and MSU's court. If we can pull this off it would be huge and garner the attention of higher recruited players across the country.

There is going to be a lot of expectations on this years team to get to the NCAA tournament and to make an impact there. If for some reason we fall short and end up in the NIT then that giant swooshing sound will be the air escaping the balloon of enthusiasm for the Iowa program. Yes, we still would have a great Junior class coming back the year after that, but we would be losing a lot of experience in Marble, McCabe, and Basabe. Having said that I am totally confident that we will make the NCAA tourney this year and make some noise in that tournament. It is essential that we get there though.

IMO, there's a lot more to consider for a sport like basketball than there is for wrestling. In wrestling, you don't have to consider "style of play" all that much (unless you're a laid back wrestler, in which case Iowa may not be for you). You also don't have to think about how you fit in with your teammates in terms of a gameplan. It's an individual sport; there's no concern about how the 125 pounder's skill set meshes with the heavyweight's skillset. You just get the 10 best guys and put them out there.
