no, no. You've got it all wrong. the northwestern player, filled with good sportsmanship decided to hug McCabe, and mcCabe, filled with brotherly love, lost his balance and fell over. It was a touching moment, but the NW player was given a technical for it. McCabe then whispered sweet nothings into the Northwestern player's ear, and that caused the ref to issue the tech on McCabe.

If the player's back is to the basket, the defender should be able to hold his ground.

the new rule ONLY makes sense if you are driving face foward/ on the perimeter. the new rules don't make any sense inside.
