Official Celebration Thread

Don't think people are celebrating that TL got fired, although I don't feel sorry for him since he is set for life. More like we are all celebrating that we will have some excitement back in Iowa Basketball, no matter who we get the fan base will be excited.

I think it is a little un classy to celebrate someone being fired. The guy tried and it just didn't work out. I'm with Ghost. Let's see who we hire first. Everyone was Hoorah when they fired Alford, and 3 years later he is sitting in the NCAA Big Dance with a 3 seed and we have one of the worst programs in college baskteball.

While it is certainly unclassy to celebrate a guy getting fired, that isn't my problem with this.

My qualms are with celebrating an uncertain future, when (extremely recent) history has shown us that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I would celebrate the HIRING of a good coach, but celebrating a firing is waaaaay to premature, in addition to being lame and classless.

YAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ghost while it may be true the grass isn't always greener on the other side it is also true when we say "The grass can't get any browner on our side".

Let there be no mistake this isn't personal against Lick. I would much rather be celebrating our appearance in an NCAA tournament but I don't have that option here.

I understand with change comes opportunity. Opportunity for things to get better, opportunity for things to get worse. Since i believe it can't get any worse I see a lot of opportunity and choose to celebrate that. EMBRACE CHANGE!

I won't celebrate anything until, assuming Lickliter is terminated, a qualified replacement is hired and the recruiting class is secured.

The firing of Lickliter is not goint to automatically make everything better. Have you guys learned nothing from celebrating Alford's departure a few years ago?

This (with slightly less seriousness). Whether the program benefits from Lick's firing will depend, in large part, on his replacement.

Thanks goodness it finally has happened!

He needed to go!

He had driven us into the ground.

We should be able to keep all over players that we want!

I'm very excited Lick is done at Iowa. This means I WILL be renewing my season tickets next season.

I have nothing but respect for TL and hope he lands on his feet. But he was not getting it done on multiple levels.

And while we can't guarantee that a new coach will be more successful, I think it would be tough to be worse in regards to wins, attendance, style, and turnover. There is no where to go but up. And that is where we are finally heading.

Well said Corey.

I think we all want to see Iowa Basketball get back to where we all feel it should be, but is this something to celebrate? Hardly.

Actually, I think it is a sad day when a coach is fired because things didn't work out. I think we all wanted Lick to be successful in Iowa City, but it just didn't turn out that way. He's a good guy, but it just didn't work out for him. That to me isn't something to celebrate.

As has been already mentioned, the grass isn't always greener on the other side, and we have been personal witness to that. With that said however, it seems hard to think that things could get worse.

I'm glad to see Iowa move on, but this doesn't put me in a celebratory mood.

I think it's actually pretty sad. I'll never understand some of the venom that certain people have for a coach that doesn't win.

I'm glad Iowa is moving on, but it's nothing to celebrate over.

Listen the man hasn't died. We aren't dancing on his grave. This can't possibly be construed as the grass isn't always greener situation. Embrace and celebrate change people.

six weeks ago, i really felt like lickliter deserved another year. he had started the season with a ridiculously inexperienced group, gone through some real difficulties in the non-conference season, and gotten whipped in the first few conference games. there was a five-game stretch, though, where a lot of us thought we saw the light and the end of the tunnel. we beat tennessee state (yawn, i know, but we couldn't beat anyone earlier in the season), beat penn state, looked great in stretches at michigan state (the first ten minutes of that game were probably our best of the season), dismantled indiana on the road, and played tough at home against an ohio state team that had more strength and athleticism at every position. eric may emerged, playing great defense against evan turner. matt gatens showed flashes of being able to dominate games. brennan cougill looked like a legitimate big ten player. aaron fuller got healthy and showed his potential.

we didn't look like some sort of juggernaut, but we looked like we were going to compete with everyone. i though that when we got AT back in the mix we would be respectable, win 6-7 big ten games, pick off a weak team in the first round of the BTT, and set the table for a big change the following year.

everything that has happened since then has been a complete and utter failure. so i'm happy that lick is gone, and i will celebrate that. but this will be barta's easiest decision by far. he's got to make a good hire, and the new coach has to come in like his hair is on fire, keeping everyone on the team, winning over fans, finding a guy to sign with AT's scholarship (this year or next), and getting after ALL of the great players that live within 5-6 hours of campus.

i will celebrate a little when the new guy is announced, a little more if all our guys are still enrolled by the end of the year, a little more if we sign a big or a point guard for next year, and a little more if the new coach shows some personality and humor in his first press conference. but i will mostly celebrate if i get to go to carver next year and see competitive basketball with 15,000+ fans who are into the game. a lot still needs to happen to make that a possibility.

I don't know why everybody seems to want to think that this is personal. It's not.

It's the end of a very bad era of coaching. It's true that there are no guarantees, but there is hope for the future with a new coach, and to me, that is worth being excited for.

I don't think anybody is celebrating the fact that Lick is out of his job.

Let's not forget he's walking away with $2.4 million, most likely.

Everyone knows that Duff defended Lick to the end.
Watch out for the politically correct crowd Duff, they are trying to quell any free speech, even when it is tongue in cheek, on these boards.

Just to be perfectly clear:

Lick is a fine human being,by all appearances. No one is celebrating that he lost his job, only that Iowa bb can look toward the hope of a fresh start. A fresh start cannot happen until the first step. Today is the first step. No one knows what the future holds, but we are americans and americans are optimistic by nature which is why fans go to spring training and men hit on beautiful women in bars, so please allow that those of us who feel Iowa can be better in bb than the last three years this little moment of hope.

Again, my problem isn't that you may offend Lick personally. I have no problem that he is being fired. It is justified, and he knew the ramifications of his performance.

My problem is that I will not celebrate until I know the program is in capable hands. For instance, if Dana Altman is hired, will you be celebrating?

Save your celebration until we know things are really pointing up.

I'm not celebrating. I wanted a replacement because I just didn't see the program going anywhere.

I am excited again about Hawkeye BB though and can't wait next season now. I just hope we don't hire someone from Indiana!

Exactly. Lick isn't going to the poor house. It's not like we are celebrating someone who will end up in the soup line somehwere. Lick will be fine. He will likely take a year or two off, enjoy his family a bit, help John find a place to play ball, and land on his feet somewhere doing what he loves (coaching basketball).

From day one Lick has done everything right. He has come in with a good attitude, he's embraced Iowa City and the school as a whole, he's tried to sink roots in town, and he's done it the right way. It didn't work out on the scoreboard and this is what it's all about. He'll be compensated nicely (of which he's earned every penny) and he will move on.

It happens all the time.
