Offensive numbers

Few interesting numbers for the offense right now.

1) They are averaging nearly 400 yards per game in total offense.

2) Iowa is averaging 243 yard per game passing the ball.

3) Iowa is averaging 8.3 yards per attempt passing the ball.

4) Iowa is averaging 29.8 Points per game.

These are all very positive developments for the offense. As Brandon Smith and ISM continue to develop, this will become even harder for defenses to focus on our TE, or our running game. It is very positive that we showed vs Minnesota that if you stack the box to take away the run, that we will just punish you through the air and put nearly 50 points on the board. This will help keep teams more "honest" on defense.

Good numbers but bit concerned about the running game.
I'm not and I'm not targeting you with this, you're just the 50th person to say something similar so I'm replying. Teams have basically made it impossible for us to run the ball. What the rest of the offense is doing right now is saying "OK, fine, we'll take the passing game." Its like fans can't ever be happy. People complain that Kirk bashes his head against a concrete wall and Hayden used to scratch where it itches. That's what we're doing now and its still not "good enough" for some people.

I'm not really worried about the running game either. We are still averaging over 150 yards per game on the ground, and the fact is I think for the first time in a long time we can punish teams through the air if they sell out to stop our running game.

Yes. That is a good point. However, Iowa is tenth in rushing, behind winless Nebraska, and two passing teams. Indiana and Purdue. I like that Iowa is passing more and their average points have gone up. But lets not forget we are 5 game into the season. A season where Iowa has played two division 2 teams. One good B12 team and one national contender. And they are still down the list in rushing.

Iowa is leading the conference in sacks against. Not a good testament to the offensive line play. And as a passing offense they are middle of the pack. Not everyone is playing a 8 man front on Iowa.

As we know with Kirk Ferentz teams, the line seems to get it together about half way through the season. I am hoping this is the case here.

Iowa has allowed 5 sacks all year long, that is tied for 14th best in the country?

My concern was the 2 costly turnovers by Stanley, especially the one right before half time that gifted the Gophers a touchdown and gave them a lot of momentum. Fortunately the offense was able to over come that.

I actually liked the fact that Iowa kept running the ball, they wound up with over 100 yards rushing. Granted it was with 40 attempts but it was enough to keep the Minnesota defense off balance.

I'm with you @ssckelley about continuing to run the ball. The thing is we had a lead the entire time, so we also wanted to work clock, so the rushing game accomplishes that. Also when the D has so many men in the box, if you can just break that one tackle or make that one guy miss you can also house a defense that loads the box.

Who are the 2 division 2 teams? Iowa has to be one of the best teams at protecting to QB in the country so far. I really question the rest of your stat pack.

Yeah Iowa never got that break away run, which would have made the per carry numbers look a lot better. I give Minnesota some credit, it had looked like to me they were going to force Stanley to beat them, which he did. The only time I remember seeing even just 6 in the box was in obvious passing situations.

I personally like that Iowa was aggressive going into half and throwing the ball. It was a bad ball by Stanley, but they were still attacking rather than being happy with the score. It's a tough crowd because Iowa typically runs the ball in that position and gets railed for it, they throw the ball and they get railed for it.

It's because Kirk is too conservative and Brian calls bad plays.

Am I doing this right?

Yep, take a couple knees with more than 90 seconds left and the fans are pissed that they're playing it safe. Throw an INT trying to score before the half and the coaches are idiots. Can't win.

yeah, and here's the thing, at no point at any time did I feel that Iowa was not in control of the game. We were up 14-0 so quick. So, I am pretty damn happy that the team is working on the passing game and situation. Against a team like MN, you can be aggressive cause you're at least 2 TD's better than them at all times of the game - so do it. Unfortunately, Iowa rarely plays like that and we have to hear about it from the KF boo birds, so I was pretty happy to see it even if it didn't result in something good. Unfortunately, it opens the door for the same critics.

The only time I was in doubt just a teeny tiny bit was after the strip sack and quick score by Minnesota. That brought them to within 7, but that faded quickly after ISM brought the kickoff back to the 50.

I liked what Brian did on Saturday. They honestly looked like they were a complete college football team.

I'm a little surprised that Iowa is unranked right now.

Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa. Division 2 might not be the right term, but they are not power 5 teams. The sack stat is on the B1G stats.

Division 2 is not the right term and most every major P5 team in the country has played multiple teams that are not P5 at this point in the year. UNI is fcs and is having a pretty down season from their program standards. Northern Illinois is D1 and one of the MAC favorites. I was more or less just bustin' your balls.
