Nunge

There are 3 options. 1 is he isn't good enough to play. 2 is he is so good that its in the teams best interest for him to play his best position and he takes away minutes from Cook and Pemsl. 3 is he is too good to keep off the floor but not good enough to take minutes from Cook or Pemsl. In that option he will have to play some 3. I think that is the most likely option.

Where, I must have missed that. I've seen lots of message board people talk about it and a few reporters speculating on it. I also saw Wagner talking about it, but I don't remember Nunge saying that.

I think it was a PTL interview.

This is the way I see it as well. I think Fran is going to really mix and match the 4/5 spots. We won't really face many 6'11 or taller post players, so we won't have to worry about that aspect a whole lot. I could totally see Cook/Nunge or Pemsl/Nunge on the floor together.

And don't forget about Kriener and Garza. Fran has really flipped the script on not having any inside/post players. Also, I hear Maishe Daily is not 6'7" and still growing. Here is your new 3, in my opinion.

I listened to part of a recent podcast with Coach Dillard and he called Nunge a stretch 4 FWIW.

He also said that he has a great shooting mechanics and range. I think he will be a solid 3 point shooter.

I'm not sure if he will be able to handle playing the 3. It certainly would be nice if he can.

probably can't, from a defensive perspective, at 6'11"/220.

I thought I read an article or post or something from Jon or Rob on this site calling him one of be best shooters out of HS. Maybe I'm wrong but what were his high school 3 pt stats??

Nunge has a really good stroke. He'll be able to hit the 3 no problem. He also does have a pretty good off the dribble game from the wing. We'll see how he does against real defenses, but the potential is there. You see it a couple of times in this video.

Nunge is a little bit different player than I thought. I thought he would be a better outside shooter but on the flip side, I expected him to be a little weaker and not as skilled inside. Overall, he's probably as good or better than I expected but just a little different game.

Hopefully the 3 pt shot will come along.

So where did all the Jarrod Uthoff comparisons come from?

I don't think there is anything that says he won't be able to defend 3s just because of his height. He looks fairly nimble to me.

Remember JU played "3" his Junior Year and he really wasn't overly athletic. His length made up for his lack of quickness as it also could with Nunge.

You could be right. But I think he'd have to be guard a bigger player as anyone with real quickness could blow by him. I really think that Nunge could wind up being a 5, depending on his weight. He's darn near 7'0". But hey, if he can guard the 3 position, that'd make us even better, so I'd be all for it.

Tall skinny white guy

The more I see of Nunge, the less I agree with the JU comparison. JU had arms like golf clubs when he first got to Iowa while Nunge already has a thick enough body. He was a much more finesse player than Nunge is going to be and they don't have all of the same skills.

He will definitely be playing in the post at times. If he plays at 230, like he said Fran wants him to, he'll be 10-15 lbs heavier than JU was as a SR.

Just because he plays the 3 on offense doesn't mean he has to defend the opposing 3.
While I understand this logic it only goes so far. The problem is Cook and Pemsl will probably be taking the majority of minutes at the 4. From everything I've seen I would imagine Nunge has a better chance guarding 3s than those guys. Cook, while extremely athletic, often finds himself out of position and I don't think we want him picking up hand check fouls on the perimeter.

The only two "bigs" that would be better off guarding 3s would probably be Wagner and Uhl. Those guys are the furthest behind offensively.

IMO all roads lead back to Nunge playing some 3. Maybe that means we play zone the majority of the time when he's out there.
