Notre Dame will be joining the B10, Book it.

Delaney is putting the squeeze on them...chicago style...ND is getting nervous about being frozen out..with no one left to play them but the lil sisters of the poor...I agree..this is gonna happen.

Put ND,Rutgers, and Nebraska on the BTN and it will rule the east and west coast and everywhere in between.

I saw this article and thought the same thing, no way they're going to miss out on all that extra $ plus be stuck playing joke schools

I thought from the very beginning of this expansion talk, that all of the rumors about Texas, Nebraska, Missouri, Rutgers, Pitt Ect was all a ploy to get Notre Dame. Notre Dame is not going to have a choice. All Jim Delany has to say is, "Either join us, or we are not playing you anymore." The financial incentive for Notre Dame to stay independent no longer exists.

Something else to consider…

One of the biggest reasons floated why ND didn’t join the Big10 previously is due to their TV deal with NBC. It was stated that ND didn’t want to join the B10 because they make more money on their own. That has changed dramatically over the last few years.

In 2008 NBC and ND extended their deal to run through the 2015 season. While terms of that contract were not released it was noted that under the current contract NCB paid ND 9million per year for the rights to broadcast home games. While that is indeed a big number it pales to the 13million (I’ve heard this number thrown around it could be wrong) each school gets from the B10 network.

In addition when Dick Ebersol signed that contract he was quoted as saying ND didn’t need to win titles for the deal to be good for NBC, they just needed to be a top 10 team. The reality is ND has finished in the top 10 only 3 times in the 17 years NBC has had the TV contract which is clearly not a good ratio. There is the distinct possibility that the NBC money won’t be around in 2015 and with the success it’s had the B10 Network isn’t going anywhere.

If you combine the facts that they could make more $$$ in the B10 than they do as an independent, the NBC $$$ might not be there long term, with the landscape change of college football as the B10 and Pac10 expand it seems like a slam dunk that ND will be FORCED to join a conference and the B10 seems to be the only logical fit.

When you break it down though it’s still only about the money.

Notre Dame will never be forced to do anything, they may choose to join but they won't be forced.

Good Stuff Duff, I have to say you are wrong though, it isn't about Money it is about their EGO. They think they are too good for the Big 10

Very true nobody can physically force them to do that.... however they certainly may be FORCED to join a conference if they want a part of the new BCS or playoff system. And they may be FORCED to choose between joining a conference or falling into football obscurity like Army and Navy.

You really think Notre Dame would be obscure without a conference?

Fair. I agree they are arrogant (spelling?) but I don't think they are completely stupid which they would have to be to let themselves get left behind...

Left out of the BCS or Playoff system, no large scale TV deal, a consistently losing program, a systematic decline in the numbers of devout Catholics that feed the program, stringent academic standards that make it difficult to compete.... Yep.

I'd argue without the NBC deal ND is obscure now. If they get left behind media wise they would have the national relevence of the Army and Navy football programs have today in about 5 years.

There are 2 reasons why they have had an "ego".

1. Their football tradition over the past several decades
2. Their huge supply of money.

Since they are going to be losing out on both money and tradition, they will be FORCED to join the Big 10. Notre Dame might be arrogant. But they aren't stupid. They are not going to leave millions of dollars on the table.

Duffman, I know you're trying to make some unbelievable prediction that you can go back on and say "see, I told ya" IF it happens but for you to think Notre Dame football will be obscure without a conference is laughable at best.

I wouldn't say Notre Dame will be obscure but you would have to admit that Notre Dame does not have near as big of name today as what they had 15-20 years ago. If they leave the money on the table that the Big 10 has to offer, they might continue to fall further and further behind. NBC will not partner with Notre Dame forever.

Acutally between the BTN, ESPN and ABC the Big Ten made $242 million in tv revenue last year or $22 million per school. So while Indiana and NW got $22 million ND got their $9 million.

It would make my day if Notre Dame begs and pleads to be let into the Big Ten, and the Big Ten says no, go join the Big East, we don't need you. You had your chance and you blew it.

The Big 10 with ND would make more money as well and ND would get a good share of that. Other than ego, I don't see why ND wouldn't join. I've never run the numbers though.

Great, Great point. Does anybody honestly believe that Notre Dame is going to watch Northwestern make more than double the tv revenue as ND does?

Notre Dame has always loved their independence. They were allowed to stay independent all of the years because of the tv contract with NBC. But the Big 10 Network changed the landscape of college football.

Also, with Notre Dame in the Big 10, there will be a Big 10 championship game that will generate even more money.
