Noah Fant & T.J. Hockenson are off to the NFL. Who replaces them at tight end? Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz talked about that, depth on the D-Line, future of the Cash position & the late signing period today.

Going 8 deep on the Dline was a luxury we had last year, but I mentioned in several threads that Iowa didn’t always go 8 deep. One way to keep these guys from getting gassed if we only go 6 deep would be to establish a strong running game on offense.

On the 4-2-5 thing I echoed much of the same as what KF ultimately just said. They had the personnel for it last year and the LB injuries made it a no brainer, but Iowa didn’t always employ that defense. Heck we only used it for about 7 or so games last year and lost at least 3 of them. Phil will adjust based on the personnel we have. It looks like we have some good LBs coming up so maybe we switch back to our base 4-3 that we’ve played good defense with for the last 20 years. On passing downs we can rotate in some of our good looking secondary players. Phil will adjust but some posters were acting like Iowa was helpless without Hooker and the 4-2-5 and I’m not sure that’s the case.

Lastly I love what KF said about going out and getting instant help. I don’t think he always had that philosophy but between Butler, Easley, and Sargent the staff has done a pretty good job of this in recent years. The market is tough and who knows if we will get anyone but I do like the mentality.

Disagree that the 4-2-5 is just a 1 year fad. Coaches have stated that this will be the primary formation going forward.

Although no formation will be played 100% of the time (formations will continue to vary based on the situation and the opponent) , the 4-2-5 will probably be played more than any other formation.

So now they are calling the new hybrid DB/LB the "cash" position? I wish they would settle on a name. I read a story last week they were calling the "star" position.

Are they implying that the player who plays this position is the *star* of the defense and will earn a lot of *cash* ?

I agree. I think we have the horses, no I know we have them, to run the 4-2-5. Question is can they improve in football knowledge enough between now and fall? Same goes for de. Dt also I guess.
Basically we have the ability/size/ speed and this year with Doyle should really be pushing the position of opportunity that many younger guys have the chance at. So I think we will be fine in ability.
Football knowledge?? Who knows.
That is hard to predict, even if you are right there everyday. When the light bulb comes on??
That said, pure athletic ability can go a long way sometimes.
To me, I still say the same thing I did at the beginning of this year, we need to be more stout in the middle. Especially running a 4-2-5. Our guys did a good job of it this year considering it was new and the fact their role playing their position became more important.
We have the "star" "cash" position covered IMHO, it's can we get the dt depth and as a whole to step forward. That is what will decide if we can be successful running the 4-2-5.

As for Te, I think we should be ok. They have a lot of ground to cover certainly and we need them to.
The luxury they have that the dt's don't is the wr room should take another pretty big step forward as well as the ol and rb's.
