They did not have to be a Big Ten Champion. They did not have to have a Final Four Run. But they do need to make the Big Dance this year. This was important not only for the psychology of this current team, but for the future of the program. Now, I have to think this team is probably a bubble team with more work to do.
This team has the talent to at least be a Big Dance team and they are under achieving.
I said in another post Fran has chinks in his armor. Now I see a gaping hole. The elegant speaking Fran that we normally see and hear from in his pressers has been regulated to "Ya," "I don't have answers," and we are "a little fragile."
He needs to get his team performing at enough of a level in the Big Ten Tournament to redeem this season and make sure they make the Big Dance. It would be his best coaching job to date at Iowa if he can accomplish this imho. They still may make the Big Dance by default, but this is not a tourney team right now. They are not even a very motivated NIT team. And, I think he has an uphill battle. If they can't beat Illinois at home playing for a bye in your own conference tournament and not putting yourself potentially on the bubble, how are you going to fix things in 5 days for the post season?
Somewhere along the line this team was lost. I have to think at this point there are chemistry issues on this team. I just hope that Fran is not the catalyst or root of the problems behind the scene with this team.
Very disappointing. I hope things get turned around.
Once again, they might get in the Big Dance by default (probably will), but they are one and done right now. Personally, I don't think they deserve it. They need to show some large balls in conference tournament to prove their worth imho. If I was on the committee I'm not sure I would put them in at this point and I bleed black and gold.
