Not all that impressed with Payne

Got to love the player bashing once again. The kid is a freshman, he is going to take his lumps as the whole team will. You think they will be preassuring Cully a year from now? I doubt it but now they can because of the lack of depth. Could any of you that are bashing Cully go out and do what he does game in and game out? Doub it, get off the kid and try supporting him. Granted the basketball program has fallen but most of the fans have sunk below the level of the team as far as I'm concerned.

Wow

I dont see a lot of bashing in this thread. It looks like to me its been a pretty fair discussion of his game. Just because it was stated that this team doesnt have any game changers isnt player bashing.

Relax

I don't see any player bashing. I see some good conversation about Cully. Go read my post I am not bashing, just stating what I believe to be true.

It's a discussion thread and the discussion was pretty good until you decided to jump in with your tone.

Calm down buddy.

Also, should it always take 9 and a half seconds to get the ball to half court? He is always flirtin with that ten second call. That might not seem like a big deal. But it just seems we are usually well under 20 seconds before he even tries to get us in our offense.

This part is what bothers me the most. There are many times where he slowly crosses midcourt as the shot shot starts to tick 26, 25, etc., as if he is unaware of the shot clock. But some of the blame has to go to his teammates for not staying back with him to set picks and keep the defenders honest. Lots of times he is just left back there to fend for himself unless there is a double team.

The PG is suppose to be alone to beat the press assuming it is only one man. Of course if there is a double team or a trap, he needs help. But generally if the pg cannot beat a one man press, then you are in trouble. Minny was trying to trap just before or after the got it past half court. That is where he needed help from teammates!

A "game manager" or "serviceable" PG is not enough to be a top notch BigTen, its the mark of mediocrity at best, though most likely, its the mark of a losing team. IOWA, at its best, has had top PGs, from Lester, to BJ, to Andre, to Dean, and Horner, none of these guys fit in with serviceable, and a top notch PG manages a game, but from the description/term of "game manager" used earlier, nothing denotes excellence, and thats a problem.

To watch Payne continually turn his back to the defender for fear he doesnt have the quickness or handles, to not be able to get around a defender nor create for his teammates, I see the skill of a combo, not a PG, and he is a bit small as a combo, and he doesnt score or defend like a combo should.

I am still impressed with him. Dude has grit and is tough. Had a few bad passes tonight, but you really can't ask for much more out of a freshman pg in the big 10!!!

He's not Andre Woolridge or Ronnie Lester but I like his game a lot! He's a freshman playing with mostly freshmen and sophomores. They're all learning on the job and improving in all aspects as they gain experience. Payne, Fuller, Gatens, and May are a very nice nucleus to build around. Give me 4 more players with equal or greater talent and I think we've got a basketball team! Go Hawks!

For stretches Payne had an outstanding game tonight. He seemed to be losing control with the errant passes and was rightly pulled to cool down and collect his emotions. But I like the kid's grit and spunk. May, too.

As the offensive sets continue to become more automatic for him and everyone else (instead of relying on getting a play from the bench nearly every time up the court) I think you will see the turnovers go down. I also think he showed that something extra which is often hard to coach and that is the "I want the ball when the game is on the line" mentality. At times last year and earlier this season we had periods where it seemed no one on the floor really felt comfortable with the ball under pressure but tonight I saw Payne try and take this team on his shoulders down the stretch with a couple of aggressive drives to the hoop. I also saw him find the open shooter for what may have been a game-tying 3pt attempt with a minute or so left in the game so I remain confident that he is going to be a solid contributor over the next 4 years, especially when I stop and remember that he may not be 100% recovered from his back injury last year (which at the very least hampered conditioning).

Let me put some credence to your post, I think Payne is awful, slow, defenseless, out of control going to the hoop, errant passing, haven't really seen much to make me believe he will ever be a legit 3 point threat, doesn't have a good enough handle or speed to even beat the tamest of full court pressure...all of these things are not freshman related, by this time in your basketballing life you can't really change these things. These are natural talents that you either have or do not have. He looks like he's just doing the drills from practice in the games. The point of the drills is not to do the exact thing in the game its to take the skills emphasized in the drills and translate it into the flow of a game. He just lets the defender boss him around to much...I could go on...

You are trying to say that a freshman in college can't improve quickness, his defense, his dribble drive, passing and 3 point shot. That is so stupid I don't know where to begin. Lets start with this. Name for me 10 Iowa Hawkeye players that played 4 years at Iowa that were BETTER as freshman then they were as seniors.

It just doesn't happen, all 18 year old kids are MUCH better at all the things you listed by the time they hit 22. Do you think Lebron was better at 18 or 22? Was Horner, Oliver better as freshman?

+ 1 Better yet... compare his stats with Horners. You might be surprised. Also think its safe to say that Horner had a better supporting cast.

Cliche- How many times did Cully not get the ball up the court last night? I remember him getting swiped once. Indeed he gets out of control at times, but that is definitely something that will get better. I don't think you can be more wrong about him. Dean makes a good point in regards to him getting better. Don't forget that Cully also missed a good amount of time with a back injury.

I've said it from Day One. Iowa will be just fine with Cully at the point.

Storm you have been very consistent about this position. However I still strongly feel that if next year is make or break for a winning team (I think you would agree with me on this), Cully needs help next year at point. He will improve next year but we need someone else to push him in practive and make it so he is only playing 20-25 minutes. I love Lick's heart but he shouldn't be playing more than a minute. I don't think Tucker is the answer and I would hate to rely on Brust to come in right away. A good defensive point guard who can distribute I think would make a big difference.
