Non-Conference Schedule Released; TV and Times TBD

8 of the 13 non-conference opponents had a season-ending RPI of 275 or lower. (I got this from realitimerpi.com, so it may not be 100% accurate, but it should be close.) There's no way Iowa will have a respectable RPI, unless they pile up a bunch of conference wins.

The schedule is an enormous failure of Fran's.

This year's team will be more experienced, deeper, and more talented than last year's team. True, they lose Gatens, the team's best defender and a guy that could put points up... but there are people to take the reigns. Iowa will be able to run more with this depth. Also, you've got guys like Marble and White who are going to be the players to step up and lead this team.

Iowa needed another cupcake filled non-conf for at least this season to build confidence and pad the W column. Once Iowa gets into that top 1/3 of the B1G they can go out and schedule the bigger guys.

The real issue is that instead of getting the teams that are respectable in a lower conf, Iowa has scheduled some bottom feeders and that's going to kill the RPI/Pomeroy.

No kidding... wins at Williams Arena and the Kohl Center were just terrible.

Last 5 years how many road wins has Iowa had? Those are good and definitely headed in the right direction no doubt but after that road win at Wisconsin how many did they have? They've also lost more times to bad teams on the road than won. That was my point. Have to beat teams you should on the road first consistently. No one views Iowa as a good road team. Need to change that.

Why don't you back up your projections for losses with some type of reason. UNI lost a lot, Iowa State lost a lot, and VT was so so. We are much stonger than last year and I really don't see more than 1 loss in these three games which would put the preseason at 11-1. I have respect for those teams but they are not sure losses. I know, we lost Gatens, so? Love the guy but he wasn't a huge game changer until the last 5-6 games. We will be much better than any team in the last 10 years.

Not to say we won't win, but UNI did not "lose a lot". In fact, they lost almost nothing. IIRC they had one senior that actually play in Moran. They will be very good this season and could very well reach the top 25 at some point.

You may have forgotten who was the former coach!

One thing to keep in mind about the non-conference SOS RPI is that we don't know how teams improve/get worse from year-to-year and over the course of a year. Take ISU from last year. They played Mississippi Valley State, who was something like 1-10 at the time. After ISU beat them, MVSU went on a 20-1 run to finish with a (somewhat) respectable RPI of 144.

Obviously, we need to take care of business and win these games. Then,we can hope that some of these god-awful teams won't actually be that god-awful.

Ideally, in future years, Iowa can start scheduling the better low and mid-majors, to go along with more of the "name" teams, instead of the dreck we've seen these past few years.

Not a huge fan of this, a .500 record in the BIG this team could be last 4 out with an RPI that is garbage from this pathetic OOC, young team or not...

How can you compare the last 5 years teams? They are nothing like this year's team (or even last year's team). Nothing alike.

You can't say, "Iowa is terrible on the road" because they haven't even PLAYED on the road yet.

It's pretty simple it's been the same formula finish top half big ten or seventh maybe. Finish strong and you will have a good shot at tourney non conference schedule is over rated wins are important.

Because they haven't proved they are a better road team. We have results of last 5 years, we have nothing for this season or next season yet, etc. Basing this on those results. Can't base my opinion on something that hasn't been proven otherwise yet. Until they prove they can win on the road consistently, they aren't a good road team.

I hope that changes going forward. Nothing is more frustrating than losing to bad teams like PSU and Northwestern with nothing more than glorified high school crowds and gyms.

This doesn't take away from the excitement I have for this team going forth. Very anxious to see Gabe's improvement and the new recruits play. As well as watching Aaron and Marble take over. Eric May could be fun to watch again too. So many exciting things. But just as with football, I will temper expectations because still a lot to prove and the top tier teams (OSU, MSU, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin) are always going to be a challenge for Iowa.

What is the point of looking over the past 5 years? Last year's team was gaining confidence and experience and it will continue on to this year. So if Iowa does well on the road this year does that mean in 5 years they will be in the final 4?

It has to be the rule of 5 years?...kind of like in football uptick for 3 years then down for 3 years. All of this is just nonsense!

Take it a year at a time Ryno and enjoy it!

Why use 5 years? How many of the current players or coaches were on the team 5 years ago? How about look at the last 2 years on the road as this coaching staff was then in place, as well as most of the players.

I think this is a pefect schedule. Most of the games are winnable, including UNI and Iowa State. Down in Cancun remains to be seen. I also think we take Virginia Tech. I still remember when we played Wake Forest with one or two five star recruits and a boatload of four star recruits at Wake. We almost won and lost on a desperate three from far away in the last second. We can handle Virginia Tech.....

This schedule gives the new recruits actual game time experience which will help Fran and Staff. It will also give the Staff the time to experiment with different combinations for different situations during the games.....

:)

Again, the last 5 years mean absolutely nothing to this year's squad.

I like the schedule too. Except for all the injuries interupting the team last year, this coaching staff has shown its pretty exceptional. I think it will give the coaching staff time to experiment, and time for the players to get comfortable with what the coaching staff will want them to do. It is a pretty young team with only one senior, and five incoming freshmen. It should be a lot of fun to see how the other teams will hold up to how Iowa will attack and defend them. During the past teams have been able to, but hopefully, that will change this year.

How many RPI top 100 teams are there here? UNI. I'm assuming ISU. Iowa only plays the big boys in the Big 10 once. I understand why this schedule exists, it just leaves very little margin for error for a team that hopes to push for the tournament.

I'm fine with few top 100 teams, I'm unhappy with all the 200+ teams.
