Interesting bit on WMT 600 this morning. Greg Morris (shoe guy) every Friday and he made mention this morning that Noah Fant comes in to just say hi to him every day during the season. Doesn't ask for anything, just to say hi to the equipment guys.

How do you get that gig? Being the shoe guy? Do you need a 4 year degree in sports medicine? Probably.

Shoe guys/clubhouse managers frequently made the team's travel arrangements back in the day as well, from hotel accommodations to airport flight times to expensing per diems to the coaches to setting up buffets/meals for the players. It's a very important, detailed, busy job at the division 1 level.

For years during the Hayden Fry era, the team would stop at the Dubuque Midway Hotels' Hoffman House for a buffet lunch when they played at Wisconsin. It was about halfway between Iowa City and Madison and the team would usually pass through in mid afternoon, in between peak meal hours.

Edit: Most teams now have full time travel coordinators to handle these duties. But there was a time, less than than twenty years ago, where a clubhouse person or team doctor or assistant team doctor would handle those duties.

Greg Morris is a graduate of the UofI. He has worked for the FB program close to 30 yrs. His nickname is the shoe guy but he is actually the equipment manager. I responsible for all football gear & equipment (game gear, practice gear, travel attire, helmets, pads, uniforms. etc. Plays a big role in making sure road games go smoothly for us from a uniform/equipment standpoint/

He's also a certified athletic trainer (spent many years working on the HS level assisting local teams during FB games) and is a volunteer firefighter.

He's an all-around good guy.
