Shoe guys/clubhouse managers frequently made the team's travel arrangements back in the day as well, from hotel accommodations to airport flight times to expensing per diems to the coaches to setting up buffets/meals for the players. It's a very important, detailed, busy job at the division 1 level.
For years during the Hayden Fry era, the team would stop at the Dubuque Midway Hotels' Hoffman House for a buffet lunch when they played at Wisconsin. It was about halfway between Iowa City and Madison and the team would usually pass through in mid afternoon, in between peak meal hours.
Edit: Most teams now have full time travel coordinators to handle these duties. But there was a time, less than than twenty years ago, where a clubhouse person or team doctor or assistant team doctor would handle those duties.
