It makes sense to me. I imagine they were going to remove one decal for Bump and replace it with the Bump decal. Once Hayden passed, they didn't have time to get a decent decal made, but they would want to do something.

We lost the 2 main architects of Iowa's resurgence in football. This is a fair tribute, removing one decal for each of them.

I also think that the Holiday Bowl is really for Bump, and next season will be for Hayden.

He had them off after the shootings on campus back in early 90s.

He did indeed take them off for that game after Nov. 1 shootings. I was on campus at the time and it was a powerful and appropriate statement. It was the right thing to do then and feels spot on here as well.

Oddly enough, I was also at the 96 Alamo bowl, as I was living in Texas at the time. This will be the first tigerhawk-less game that I will not be attending. The last two turned out pretty good. Go hawks!

I like this idea for one special play. They all line up in their position with two running backs in the back field and no QB since Hayden was a QB. Then instead of going into a regular stance every player kneels on one knee as do all players on the sideline and coaches with exception of the tight ends and let clock run out and take the five yard penalty. Would be cool to get permission a head of time to also remove their helmets. I know it’s a crazy idea but it would be so cool and a tribute.

I felt a special sadness in my heart when I heard of Hayden’s passing similar to the sadness I felt when I heard that my childhood idle Walter Payton had passed away.

Better yet if USC would decline the penalty

That was why I initially thought there was a better option. For those living in IC or close to campus during the 1991 shootings on campus...that was a very different feel from the passing of a legend who was 90 years old. Black helmets...a feeling of dark mourning seemed a good match. I prefer to celebrate Coach Fry.

But this is good, the Fry family likes it. That's what really matters.

I don't know if there was enough time to do something more with the uniforms. Word is there will be a JHF patch next fall. That would be great.
