I just read this and AJ was not in on the last play, really, was he gassed which would be the only explanation.Notice how AJ wasn't in there at the end? This coaching staff is perplexing.
I would say the entire D was gassed at that point, but considering they had the timeout before the last play, I can't see any reason to keep AJ out unless he was injured/hurt.I just read this and AJ was not in on the last play, really, was he gassed which would be the only explanation.
Yeah right, come on. There was a timeout right before the last play. Stop making excuses for a horrible coaching decision.
Just watched the last drive and at no time did an OL pancake AJ. The play you're referring to, AJ actually beat his man and slipped after he beat him. AJ didn't look anymore tired than any of other DL on that drive. To add to that, 2 timeouts were called on the drive. The gassed theory simply doesn't apply when trying to make excuses for not having AJ in last 4 plays at all. Sorry, Dean. You're wrong.
Here's my question? Why don't we move Hesse inside to DT and let AJ take the DE position. Granted, at the 4, they do have the run option but are most likely to throw it, but damn...we needed someone in McSoreley face on that last play.
I think size is the only reason they aren't doing this. Hesse is great at getting into the back field but he is already a small DE, he would be tiny at DT.Here's my question? In all fairness to whom?In all fairness, wasn't it AJ who took the fake and went to the middle while the RB went wide for a big play?
Seriously, there's just no point. Maybe you can find 56 to go back and forth with some other nonsense. The tackle forced AJ way wide, he didn't get beat. That is what tackles are supposed to go against speed rushes, push the DE out of the play which he did to AJ and AJ slipped. McSorely stepped up in the pocket and AJ was nowhere near the QB. Heck even if McSorely didn't step up in the pocket, AJ was past the play.
Watch the next play as well, and watch AJ. He gets no push at the LOS on the stunt, and he lightly jogs after Barkley because he is gassed. I'm not trying to trash him, he was just spent, and needed to come out.
Either way AJ wouldn't have made a difference in the last 4 plays. The first two plays were quick outs. The 3rd play was a tunnel screen to a WR that Nelson played perfectly. The last play was a slant and we blitzed on the play.
Penn St. wasn't going to let the DL get to McSorely on those last 4 plays. Every one of them were quick plays, as time was running out. AJ wouldn't have made a difference in there.

I guess I just see it differently than you.
What do you think AJ could have done on 4 quick pass plays that Penn St ran? I guess I just don’t get how you think he was gonna do anything on those plays.
On the last play it's possible he could have affected the throw with some quick pressure. Either way, it's all hindsight. Without the benefit of knowing what plays were run, I would have wanted AJ in there and think it was a bad decision not to. Baring him being too gassed to go.
