No apologies required

Ummmmmm, of course being at the top is hard and EVERYONE falls. But the nature of sports competition is to be the best. Why did Hayden Fry aim for the Rose Bowl when we are just "little old Iowa and the Rose Bowl is for the Ohio States and Michigans"? Athletic competition means you shoot for number 1. I'm guessing you were never an athlete because that truth seems to escape you.

Where in any of my posts did I say to not shoot for #1? I was talking sustained success, the Rose Bowl and some day perhaps winning the NC is still the goal.

Lol - you don't want to go there but you have.

Ultimately I guess it all depends on your definition of sustained. After those 3 in a row top 10 finishes, which ended in 2004, do you realize Iowa has finished ranked in the AP top 25 only twice?

During KF's tenure his teams have finished ranked 5 of his 16 full seasons or 31% of the time.

During Fry's tenure his teams finished ranked for 10 of his 20 seasons or 50% of the time.

For my money Fry's career fits a better narrative of sustained success.

It depends on how you look at it I guess, when I mentioned sustained success I was just looking at those 3 top 10 finishes and +10 win seasons. Hayden did have his rebuilding years although he had a nice run in the early to mid 80s.

So - to be clear - you cherry pick the 3 best seasons in a row out of 16 and slap it with a "sustained success" label?

Holy Crap, the angry brigade has reared it's head.

Hayden was great, Hayden resurrected the Iowa program. Still Hayden wasn't that great over his last 10 years.... In his last 10 years he had a 42-37-1 B1G record, and only had 3 years of a winning B1G record in those 10 year.

KF line over the last 5 years looks about the same. They both have had great highs, and have had very average teams as well. That is the case at 99% of schools, Iowa, Hayden and Ferentz are no exceptions.

To be fair he has already made it known he thinks a .589 winning % is better than a .616 winning %
Have you ever argued with a Democrat? If you haven't now you know what it feels like. Math isn't really their strength.

3 seasons in a row really isn't a good measure of sustained success. I don't get why you want to press on with this, I've explained to you in detail what I meant by that 1 sentence you quoted out of my comment. Ferentz raised the bar at Iowa with those 3 seasons, we had images of NC dancing in our heads. It was not meant to be a knock on Fry as he brought the program up out of the crapper.

I did????

Which political party has issues with reading? :)

So throwing out some statistical facts makes one angry? Some awfully thin skinned people around here.

Just like JDM recently wrote - if you're going to start a narrative why don't you look at the whole picture and present all the facts?

How is an observation that some are angry being thin skinned? Also why do you assume I was talking about you? Seems to me you should look in the mirror for thin skin.

If you don't know the answer it might have something to do with an inability to read.

As the great Louis LaMour once wrote, "If you throw a rock into a pack of dogs, the one that yelps is probably the one that got hit."

I know it's been said a million times on here, but since Fry there has been an extra "guaranteed win" put on the schedule every year.

If we were like ISI fans and happy with 7 win seasons against crap schedules, there is no way Kirk and Barta would have felt the pressure to "try harder" after another random 7 win season. Crying fans gave Kirk the kick in the *** he needed to re focus.

If by "crying fans" you mean those that stopped donating then you would be correct, if you are talking about those complaining on a message board then you would be mistaken. I know many fans that stopped paying those donations for season tickets because they were tired of watching a crappy product.

Okay, this is the last time I'm gonna say this. Central Michigan is a really good program.

I meant "crying fans" as in fans that are getting ripped on now for having a problem with how Ferentz was doing his job.

Wow! Fans are fans. Period. Different opinions, expectations, demands. EVERYWHERE. Ohio State - Iowa State - UCLA - ASU - Yes, Alabama -Iowa. So what?! Some Hawkeye fans wanted Kirk gone. OK. Fair enough. Others thought he has been a great college coach. Many Tweeners. Many jumped on the negative bandwagon going by.

A few years back, M. Gordon switched his commitment from Iowa to WI. That hurt us badly. Add MG to our team, we win at least two more games per year or more. 9 wins / 10 wins. ? Just look at Canjeri. Carrying us along till NU. Our q.b. tried hard, but couldn't throw darts or deep. Ended up with seven wins. Now, CJB has been a huge part of victories. Should finish with nine or more wins. Hopefully 12 ! 13?!

Would OSU or MSU whip us? Don't know. Our coaches do not get commitments from Ohio or Penn. very often. But, this coaching staff is working diligently in recruiting and player development. Our players are demonstrating their skills and team chemistry and currently winning. Many express their views. OK.no need to apologize, but look at the big picture folks. KF and staff need Kinnick full...these guys are YOUR team. It should be a mutual admiration society!!
Go Hawks!!! ALL of them!!!

Lol. Yeah...but probably accurate. ;) I don't know about apologies or non- apologies or whatever. I DO know that Iowa football is fun as hell to watch again....mainly because NOBODY knows what the staff is gonna do next. Touchdown pass into the end zone from 20+ yards out when everyone on earth assumed we'd just run the clock for a field goal, fake field goal from 30 yards out, going for a 1st down on 4th down at almost anytime and anywhere during a game...it all keeps opposing teams, fans, and the dopey analysts clueless about what we're gonna do next. It's like Fry's first couple of years when he arrived. I'm LOVING it...win or lose.

^^ the bolded part is the main point, it is exciting and different and a little crazy, not 1970's Bobby Bowden crazy but the hawks are lining up from all angles and coming from all angles. great.

It had become pretty damn boring and slow.
