Just announced it a minute ago. I'm a little surprised, I thought he might be higher.

And I dropped off at #19 being Susie Favor-Hamilton when Charles Woodson was #20.

Jesse Owens #1? Magic Johnson hasn't been announced yet.

Top 6 (my prediction): 6. Jack Tatum 5. Tom Harmon 4. Archie Griffin 3. Jesse Owens 2. Magic 1. Red Grange.

I expect Gerald Ford to be on the list. Tatum would not make the cut.

How good was Ford as an athlete? Because the list doesn't really take into account off-field/coaching/professional careers. It's (supposed) to be just about their college performance/relevance.

Remember...this is the same conference that brought us the new Big Ten logo and those awesome new division names. This is the same conference that brought us all those great Big Ten bowl games at the same time and managed to cut the Rose Bowl viewing audience by 15% over last year. This is the same conference that brings you all those great football and basketball officials. And so why would you expect THAT conference to do right by Nile Kinnick? The conference that enjoys the term "student-athlete" has no greater example -- it's not even close -- than Nile Kinnick. He is No. 1 without debate. But it's no surprise the Big Ten Conference has no clue. When does it?

did jim delaney and the big ten conference **** in your cheerios, too?

Hey Jon, I don't have the link, but no other than High Lord Grand Commissioner Jim Delany himself spoke in December at some length about how he and ESPN decided that playing the Big Ten games at the same time on Jan. 1 would be an awesome strategy. Jimmy D. said he and ESPN agreed that it would force viewers to watch the Big Ten and, therefore, deliver a vast audience for the Rose Bowl. And we all know how that worked out...

So if you're going to correct me, I'd suggest you make sure I'm wrong before you do.

But don't believe me, Jon. Here's the late December story from The Gazette's Scott Dochterman:

TEMPE, Ariz. — Four Big Ten teams compete concurrently in bowl games on Saturday, a strategy some might say limits the conference’s exposure and potential audience.

It seems strange that the Big Ten would spread its men’s basketball teams all over time windows to guarantee each game its television network has its own national window and do just the opposite with its football teams on Jan. 1. But Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany...said he’s “excited about it....â€

Delany negotiated a bowl agreement with the Gator Bowl to make sure ESPN’s strategy favored the Big Ten. In essence, it gives the Big Ten a day-long infomercial on the ABC/ESPN family of networks...

Dave Brown, vice president, ESPN programming and acquisitions said in a release, “These premier match-ups between teams from two elite conferences in a three-wide ‘roadblock’ across the ESPN platforms will drive viewers to our inaugural Rose Bowl Game telecast....â€

“Those windows, I think, are going to drive large audiences,†Delany said.... “I think they’re going to grow the Rose Bowl...."
---------------------------------------------

Well, JD, you and ESPN have another think coming... The Jan. 1 Big Ten ratings were abysmal, and if a 15% drop in Rose Bowl viewership is what you were after, congrats. And that Big Ten infomercial was something, huh?

Big Ten does not control bowl times

Control, no. But I bet they had a big hand in helping ESPN schedule them, don't you? It just was very unfortunate we went 0-5 on the day and the state of Michigan sent their powder-puff teams to battle the SEC.

susie who?

this list is a crock of ... regardless
I realize that track & field isn't one of the most followed sports, but Susie Favor-Hamilton was a superstar and by accomplishments alone she should have been ranked much higher than #19.

I get that most of this list will be reserved for football and basketball players because those are the most popular sports, and that's fine.

But to ridicule a #19 ranking for Favor-Hamilton is just silly. Her resume is incredible.

She was a mainstay at the Drake Relays during and after her collegiate career and the applause/cheering for her was as big as for anyone else I ever saw at the Relays.

Yes, I'm a track & field geek.

On the otherhand, I'm a sports fan , and I've never even heard of her, ever. And I like Track and Field (although, admittedly, don't follow it closely).

Also agree that Kinnick should of been Top 5, disappointed he wasn't.

I have a hard time seeing Magic above Kinnick. Great athlete and personality and he brought a National Title to MSU. (though I believe in retrospect, some questions about how he came to be Spartan have come up $$$). But he only played two seasons.
Unfashionable as this may be, I'd put Kinnick #1 (or perhaps #2 as Griffin won 2 Heismans) to make a cultural statement as much as anything. He embodies so many things that we need in this day and age. And what very few, if any, athletes have in 2010.

No way should Griffin be #1. If we're making cultural statements, it'd be Owens and Kinnick at the top. Red Grange will likely be #1, IMO. Magic is still a Big Ten Icon, one of, if not THE first basketball player that comes to mind when thinking of the greatest in conference history. You can't get a whole lot more iconic than Magic Johnson.
