Nic Baer - Up or Down?

Bear, Wagner and Uhl are competing for two starting spots I think. I think Baer is the best of the bunch. Advanced statistics show he was much better than Uhl offensively and defensively last year
True I wouldn't argue that point. I do think what's asked of Uhl and Baer isn't the same even though it's similar. I think this is Uhls time to step up and make that leap from under classman to upper. I'm not sure if he can do it or not. But he's bigger and stronger than Baer and if nothing else his defense and rebounding will be a big make or break issue on this team. With Jok and Cook I think they will be options A and B for shots. Everyone else will kinda go with the flow of the game and there'll be a handful of guys averaging between 6 and 10 pts.

Uhl has never been a good defender or rebounder. I don't know that he will all of a sudden change into something he is not. If anything he's more of a scorer

I didn't say he was good at it. I said it could be what makes or breaks him. If he's as up and down as last year I can easily see Baer playing more than him. Uhl blocked a few shots here and there and he'll need to be improved to play the bigger mins there's no doubt about that. Uhl will be asked to defend players that Baer can't matchup with down low at all. So it'll be a circumstantial thing at times between them but again if one of them stands out to an extent that can't be ignored then they'll play more

The muscle Uhl and Wagner bring will make things a lot easier for Cook. The three of them together should be pretty formitable down low. I don't think Baer would draw the attention that Uhl and Wagner would. Baer, and hopefully, Jones should be great additions. I'm looking forward to seeing what Pemsl and Kriener can do too.

To me the stronger beefier lineup makes sense to start games with too. I think Iowa will want to get Jok going early and often in games so having our strongest front line in there for offensive rebounding only makes sense. What Jones Pemsl and Kriener will contribute this year is just anyone's guess really. I don't see Iowa going that deep lineup wise a whole lot like they have in the past. But we'll see.

Agreed, I hope we only go 8 deep actually and give our best players the most minutes

Yeah I could see 9 playing consist mins. I think Baer, Bohanon, and Moss will play a lot. And one more big man. Be it Jones or Pemsl is my best guess. Coach loves Jones so once he's healthy he'll be in there too

Fran has mentioned a couple times that Iowa will play a lot of guys this year. Not sure if he's put a number on it but look for a lot of guys to play, especially in the non conference. The way I see it Pemsl & Kreiner are probably outside of the top 10, but who knows maybe they are good enough to play. There were games in the Non-Conf last year where 11 guys played in the 1st half.

I agree though, I'd like to be down to an 8/9 man rotation by the big ten season.

After listening to coach speak on different topics, I get the idea that Pemsl will play before Kriener. It will be interesting to see who redshirts if anyone.

Ok. The other thread got me thinking about Baer this upcoming season. We all know he was a pleasant surprise last year and turned out to be a good overall player with the ability to knock down the 3's.

With the insurgence of the new players vying for playing time, do you think Baer's minutes will go up, go down or be about the same?

I don't know where Fran will find the minutes for all these guys. Will he lose a couple minutes this year?
How are the new players insurgent? Is there a player rebellion? We will have to count on several of the new guys so I hope any insurgence on their part is short-lived.
