Nic Baer - Up or Down?

Ok. The other thread got me thinking about Baer this upcoming season. We all know he was a pleasant surprise last year and turned out to be a good overall player with the ability to knock down the 3's.

With the insurgence of the new players vying for playing time, do you think Baer's minutes will go up, go down or be about the same?

I don't know where Fran will find the minutes for all these guys. Will he lose a couple minutes this year?

The beauty of having so much talent (young) is that it forces competition and the winners of competition get the most minutes. Fran will find the right spot for Baer. If Baer stays as 6th man, he may get more minutes, overall.

He's very good player, but we have so much talent. That is why I can't wait to watch this season unfold so that I can assess each players talents.

I think this one is pretty cut and dry. I expect his minutes to go up. Out of curiosity, I looked to see what he averaged and it was 14.5 minutes per game.

I would anticipate he is on the floor at least half the time.

Minutes up. Scoring up. I think he will be the 6th man, but if he plays well Fran will give him the opportunity to start.

I want to see leadership, strong defense, and 3pt shooting near 40% from Nic this year.

I expect he will maintain his first off the bench status for the 3-5 and maybe the 2 although Jok is not coming out much. I'd bet he gets used similarly to how Fran used Oleseni. Both of those guys are high energy talented guys who can overwhelm opponents with their D when they are fresh and the opponent is not.

Wow, when I first saw the thread title I thought Nic's girlfriend was looking for some advice and that thread would need to be deleted. :D

Due to the fact that when Nic is out there he plays a tenacious style of basketball and has a nose for the ball his minutes will definitely go up.

I think he'll get about 17 minutes a game. I think he'll improve each year and minutes will go up each year. He reminds me so much of Ryan Bowen.

Wouldn't the title have to read..."Nic Baer - In and Out"? I think it's highly possible that Nic Baer is our second leading scorer this year. Hit's 3s, runs the floor, has a great pull up game now...and is sneaky quick to the basket. I have a funny feeling, Fran found a keeper who's going to grow up fast. He didn't seem intimidated against Villanova.

Like others, I'm finding this team really intriguing.

Lol, I'll leave that first comment alone but fully agree he will play a vital part of the success of this team. The opportunity of having so many new players getting a shot to play significant minutes is as you say intriguing.

I would say up. He's a high energy guy who makes things happen when he's on the floor. (aka white kid :D) Iowa needs him.

He plays smart...

He hustles...

He is in the right place at the right time...

He can come off the bench without complaining...

Unless his endurance improves a great deal...he is the perfect off the bench guy...

The way the lineup looks to me is he'd again be a better fit off the bench. I think Iowa will want to have Cook, Wagner and Uhl be the front line to start games. I don't think Dale Jones will be asked to play big mins for awhile. That injury he had will just take him awhile yet to get back to 100%. I wouldn't be shocked if there's games where Baer plays more than 20 mins a game depending on the flow and matchups. He'll certainly have an important role this year that's for sure.

I'd be surprised if Baer plays less than 20 mins a game. He averaged 14.5 mpg last year, I bet it's closer to 25 mpg this year but I also think he's going to be a starter

If we do go:

CW, Jok, Cook, Wagner, Uhl

Our top 5 bench guys are all going to be guys capable of shooting over 35% from 3:

Baer, Jones, Moss, Jordan, Brady

That's a luxury for a coach.

Yeah having shooters come off the bench is a nice thing for sure. Although gauging the impact of those other 4 guys is kinda tough to know yet. But I like the potential for sure. I think Baer will flourish this year he looks a little bigger/stronger on top of having that year under his belt. His hustle and overall play will be huge.

Who do you think will come off the bench if Baer is starting and playing 25ish mins? Wagner would be my guess if coach goes that way. I think coach will like Wagners physicality and overall athleticism and prefer to have Baer come off the bench for offensive punch. But if Baer has improved so much that he's too good to not start then that'd be a great thing.

Bear, Wagner and Uhl are competing for two starting spots I think. I think Baer is the best of the bunch. Advanced statistics show he was much better than Uhl offensively and defensively last year

I think Wagner and Uhl will start and Baer will come off the bench. Cook, Jok, and Williams will be the other starters. This team should be able to do a lot of good things.
