NFL MVP

Who should be the MVP of the NFL?

depends on your definition of MVP then sportstalent. if this is like the heisman (best player on the best team 9 times out of 10) then it goes to Manning. if it is the player who makes the team decent even though they'd suck without him (like tomlinson with the early chargers teams) then it is AP.

you can't go wrong with either IMO, but i'd lean for AP. this isn't a lifetime achievement award, so throw out past records and all that.

Definition is the best player, but when people say that it should go to AP because of the Vikings seasons, then you have the same argument for Manning.

Manning is on a new team and it doesn't matter how much talent he had...they still have to be on the same page, Manning was still not totally ready to go at the start of Preseason. I am sure AP was not either, but he is on the same team.

If AP breaks the rushing record and the Vikings make the playoffs he will win. The team success still goes a long way and no, I don't compare it to the Hypesman because all the top players that are discussed are elite, not always the case with the Hypesman...Gino Torretta over Marshall Faulk, really?

ROY: Andrew Luck they are asking him to do a lot more than RGIII or Wilson.

RGIII has been dominating, is near the top of the QB ratings, and was still great as a throw-first QB in his return today. Wilson is now 1 TD from breaking Peyton Manning's rookie record. While I give Luck props for helping Indy to 10 wins, he's near the bottom of the QB ratings, over 20 SPOTS below Wilson; only 2 QB's in the league have lower completion % and he hasn't broken 50% in 4 games.

RGIII was the no-brainer ROY before the injury, and today's solid return seals the deal.

RGIII and Russell Wilson are being protected by great running games and/or great defenses they are only asked to throw 20-25 times a game and given simple reads to make in RGIII case part of the offense is the Baylor offense.

Luck on the other has been asked to be Tom Brady, Peyton Manning from day one. Here is the complete playbook, go get'em kid. He doesn't have the defense or the running game that Wilson or RGIII have. Of course his numbers are going to be worse than the other 2 he has thrown 200 or more passes than each of them.

Exactly!

I can't speak for RGIII but Wilson is *not* running a simple offense at this point in the season. Not that it has jack to do with awards, which are about performance. If one of them win the Super Bowl, will you complain "yeah, but it was a simple offense...?"

I happen to agree with your comments about Luck (except the last line about # of passes). He is doing a solid job with what he has, and is going to have an outstanding career. But like the Heisman, NFL ROY doesn't give extra credit (or take away credit) for the quality or lack of quality of your teammates.

Why aren't we talking about Calvin Johnson in this thread, he just broke Jerry Rice's single season record for yards. Megatron is the best player in the NFL; the Lions throw the ball more than anyone, but he is constantly double covered and still gets yards.

Or are we really only talking about Peterson/Manning because they came off of injuries and are on better teams?

Agreed CJ is amazing MVP in my eyes but AP and PM are close. I really don't see AP getting the yards he needs to break the single season rushing record against the Packers.

Peyton should win both mvp and comeback player of the year. I don't think AP should be in the comeback player discussion, just because he only really missed one game last year. I think Jamaal Charles should be ahead if him in that discussion. MVP is a good debate but I think it has to go to Manning. Den was only 8-8 last year with God on their side, and sitting at 12-3 this year with Manning, just sayin.

When is the last time an MVP was on a 4-12 team? If he tore his ACL in week 1 they still probably have 3 or 4 wins. Impressive stats - yes. MVP - no

AP tore 400 (approximate) ligaments in his knee. Its an amazing comeback

But so is Mannings...they should share that award

AP is comeback player. I have never seen anyone come back that quickly from that serious of an injury and play at that level. It's insane. Absolutely stupid.

AP is a freak athlete, he is amazing to watch I am glad he bounced back the way he did, the Vikings would have been terrible without him. What I am saying, they have him and they are still terrible but that isn't AP's fault he is going his share and more.

So is Peyton your MVP then? If you remove Peyton and kept Tebow, they would have won like 4-5 games this whole year. Peyton made this team a real contender but just like in Indy, he had a good/great defense as well.

Minny is 9-6. Not terrible by any stretch.

Why do you think the Broncos would be terrible without Manning? They are a great team with him, but they finished 8-8 last year. That isn't good, but they still have a good defense without Manning. I'd say 8 wins would be manageable with most NFL QBs and Denver's D.

I'd say Watt is the NFL MVP, btw. Most dominant defensive NFL player in a long time.

I know you said most, but have you seen Arizona's QBs this year? Or Christian Ponder? :)

You can't be serious that the Colts had good or great defenses when Manning was there.

The year they won the Super Bowl the defense had given up the most rush yards of any team in the history of the regular season. That defense caught a spark when Sanders came back and played good in the playoffs...dreadful before that.

The Colts had Dwight Freeney and Bob Sanders...not really anyone else until Mathis started rushing the passer. Colts defense was never "good" or close to "great" the whole time Manning was there...they made some big plays, but never were a defense you expected to stop teams on a regular basis. It was always..."if the Colts get it back how much time will Manning have to operate." Always if not when.

Denver is a different story...Elway saw what kind of defense he had the second half of last season and figured out that if he got a QB that could make a difference and get the Offense to score they had the chance to be pretty darned good. When the offense looked average they still had chances to win early in the season.

Minny isn't terrible but you take AP out of that team and I bet they wouldn't have won half those games if not more.

I know I started a thread about Tebow yesterday but I don't think he will really succeed or that he is any good. I think that if the Broncos had kept Tebow other teams would have continued to force him to throw. That wouldn't have ended well. I think only more than 6 games if they had someone other than Tebow on the team running the offense. Depending on who that would have been they probably would have won more.

I despited J.J. Watt in college but now that he is in the NFL I really enjoy watching him play, he is amazing. I enjoy watching Clay Matthews play as well but only against the Bears just to watch my brother-in-laws misery. He is a die hard Bears fan it makes me laugh.
