Next Year's QB

I don't understand why the majority of posters seem to have eliminated Jake Rudock as a starter in 2013. He certainly had the credentials coming out of Florida. Everyone was going crazy waiting for him to get on campus. We all went into hysterics when Miami started recruiting him late and wanted him to drop his commitment to Iowa. He set all kinds of records in high school in arguably the best football state in the country. I have no inside information on JR. I have no preference as to who starts in 2013. I don't care if we play two QB's in 2013 if that is what it takes. I am just very curious about why JR is not getting any love on this board. Help?

Did you see how he looked in those games last year?

Rudock had several opportunities to take the field last year. Especially in the Penn State game, but KF wouldn't put him in. I haven't checked up on this but it has been said that UI is the only D1 program in the nation to play only one QB for the entire season, every snap.

That would indicate that Rudock is not ready to play. Things could change in the off season, but the fact that Ferentz refused to play him, even in blowout losses, is a pretty damning statement.

Certainly possible. It's also possible KF, GD, JVB and the other QBs understood what kind of season it could be last year, so JVB was willing to fall on the sword and save the staff from risking the confidence and/or future of the back-up QBs.

Face it, ANYthing is possible at this point.

I agree anything is possible at this point. However, regardless of how people feel about or view KF, GD or JVB, they are all competitors and I guarantee you at no point did anyone one of them consider last season as JVB was "falling on the sword." It wasn't a sacrifice to save a back-up QB. KF though JVB gave them the best chance to win because by not playing another QB strictly was a move that says at all that no one else isn't/wasn't ready to play at that time. Again, I agree anything is possible at this point, meaning going forward. But I just can't assume that KF or GD would ever think that last season JVB had to sacrifice his senior season by "falling on the sword".

This may end up much like 1987. There are 3 great candidates for the position. Any one of them has the potential to light it up. The one that shows the most on the field will be the long term starter and potential record breaker.

Dude, do you actually know what you are talking about? One ended up being a 1st rd. draft pick, the other is arguably the 2nd most prolific passer in school history and the 3rd guy had a game against Mich. St. in 86 that may never be matched by any of these guys. i am smoking crack, do I have the right 3 guys(poholosky, Mcgwire, and Hartlieb)?

People gave Hartlieb no chance said he was too small and too slow. If you give these guys no chance to match him you're selling them short.

Hartlieb had like 20 brothers that played d-1 football and a dad that coached the pedigree was there. If Phil Parker has 2 or 3 future NFL D-lineman that he can roll out there, then yeah i will believe in beathard or anybody else they throw out there.

Did I read correctly, was ruddock the national player of the year by one publication, or source?

I agree it is extreme. I was replying to MHA.

Believe me I am hopeful that someone on this team at QB right now will step up and play at that level. This team needs a leader, needs someone to perform. Right now the only real question on offense that concerns me is QB. Must like DE concerns me on defense.

I think we need one of our WR to step up and be a playmaker, as well. In addition, the guys in charge need to center this offense around the running game and getting CJF down the middle of the field much, much more effectively than they did last season.

Personally (and I posted this part earlier in the thread), what I've heard from one guy on the team was that Beathard should not be discounted as the potential starter, even though he'll be less experienced than Sokol/Rudock.

What I didn't post was what I heard from that same individual, that there was a definite reason why none of the other QB's got time this year. Even as out of sorts as JVB was this year, there would have been a precipitous drop off to the #2 guy...

I think this is spot on. I dont think it was because we didnt have any talant at back up but the guys were haveing a hard time picking up the system. Heck even JVB was having trouble. Also agree with the last two posters QB/DE and WR are the biggest concerns. Im also concerned about depth at DB should we have a couple guys go down

probably not. But it's also a fair guess that KF/GD/staff wasn't ready to risk using a QB who spent his first year learning the KOK Way, then assume he would be quick to pick up on 3-Yards-And-A-Cloud-Of-Boos for a passing game.

We need accuracy on short and medium passes. I could care less about the deep ball because we don't have the burners to get open but our receivers can get open and get space. If the QB can be around 60% well score some points.

I'm not ready to give Greg Davis the go-ahead to best assess our player personnel...

This is how I felt after the season had just ended. Especially after all this talk about how is good at playing to his players abilities.

Right now, I am hoping that it was just the new system and everyone getting comfortable. Now that GD might have his WR coach he wanted, maybe things will turn around.

Probably not, but who knows.
