Next Year?

Congrats to the Hawks for making the NCAA tournament. While I agree with the sentiment that it feels a bit hollow this team has a chance to reclaim some of their manhood so we'll see how they respond. This post may be a bit premature, but I have a few position by position thoughts on next years team.

PG- I think Gesell and Dickerson are the two best options here. I think Clemmons gives strong consideration to transferring this offseason. I think the handwriting is on the wall about his future prospects with the program. Gesell and Dickerson have a chance to give the Hawks strong to really strong PG play next year. If Gesell is going to become the player we all hope he can he must improve his shooting.

SG- This position scares me! Olgesby is a good shooter, but he lacks the athleticism to be a starting B1G two guard. He's a role player who can knock down 3 pointers. No more, no less. Peter Jok has had some good moments this year, but he's a defensive liability. This position is a huge question mark for next year and would benefit from an offseason transfer.

SF- I guess Uthoff is the guy here. He's as skilled a 6' 9" player as I can remember, but passive and weak with the ball far too often. Willie Atwood anybody!!!!

PF- My hope is that Aaron White finally plays the 4 next year. He's great in transition, but so limited in a half court game. I just don't think our coaches understand what he is and what he isn't as a player.

C- Just like this year Woodbury and Oleseni probably share minutes here.

I guess the more I think about next year's team it becomes apparent that we need to add a dynamic scorer who can get his own shot or we could be in trouble.

Yeah the way things look, next year is looking like NIT at best bid unless they can get a quality SG somewhere.

I think they're really trying hard on Atwood, because it seems he would slide in perfectly at the 3, but who knows what he will do. I'm sure Dickerson is working on him constantly.

I would expect Jok to make huge strides next year all around. He is a legit 6'6", I have hopes he can eventually become another RDM...it seems the tools are there (RDM used to really struggle on defense as well). Jok is just a raw freshman right now which happens all the time.

I would also like to see Gabe get a crack at playing the 4 from time to time. Gabe's 10 foot shot has looked pretty good lately. The only problem is there's nobody outside of Gabe who can really backup Woody, and Woody tends to get in a lot of foul trouble.

Should be a huge senior year for White.

I can't see starting Ogelsby at the 2.
I think either Dickerson and Gesell will play side by side or we really need Jok to step up and play the 2 spot.
Holding hope for Atwood at the 3 spot.
White at the 4.
Woody at the 5.

This leaves a a bench of:
Clemmons
Ogelsby
Jok/Dickerson (1 start/1bench)
Uthoff
Gabe

If we get Atwood, not bad. If not, I think we are in some trouble.

I'm convinced that if next year's team is going to contend in the B1G we have to add another scorer who can play right away. I don't know if Atwood is that kind of player, but if the last 3 weeks has shown us anything it's that this team needs an infusion of athletic scorers!! Guys who can get their own shot!

Yes, just need a slasher/scorer, preferrably 6-6 or so with some bulk to them, no more skinny guys.

With Joks injury in high school he really hasn't had much of a chance to develop defensively until this year. I think Ellingson is going to be better than expected. I would like to see Oglesby attack the basket more. He seems a little to passive. Hopefully, with Atwood, the two junior college players come to Iowa. Iowas sophomore class will be upperclassmen next year, and should be strong on the court. Meyer is 6'10, athletic, and will have been practicing and lifting weights for two and a half years. It sounds like Iowa is going to be pretty stacked next year with a lot of high division 1 players on the team. Iowa should be a tough team next year. I think the next two years are going to be pretty good for Iowa basketball, and I doubt the coaching staff is going to let up in their recruiting.

The last thing we want to see is Olgesby attacking the basket. He simply doesn't possess the athleticism to do that at the B1G level. He's a shooter, and a good one at that. But he's not a scorer in that he can't create his own shot. Those are the types of players the Iowa basektball program desperately needs!!!

uhl is getting 12-15 minutes a game next year and will be more effective than white was as a freshman

I sure hope you're right. I do wonder if he'll be strong enough to play B1G level basketball next year though. From what I've seen he's as skinny as a rail. We'll see.

PG - Jok
SG - Gesell
SF - Uthoff
PF - White
C - Olesani

Dickerson
Ogelsby
Woodbury
Clemmons
Meyer
You guys will think I'm crazy but Jok is the best passer on the team and if he can run the offense, I say give him the reigns. Unless Dickerson can come in and play PG at a high level.

I don't know much, but I do know that Peter Jok isn't going to be the starting PG next year!!

When playing around this is what I came up with for potential lineups/min next season. I actually like our chances and think we will finish better in standings than we did this season. I also expect Ellingson to potentially RS and am basing this on the fact that Atwood has not yet committed.

Minutes based on fouls/injuries
Kyle Meyer may fill in at C or PF will only get about 5/6 min a game
Brady Ellingson will play if Josh/Peter are hurt. Otherwise will RS
Dominique Uhl will see 6/8 min a game, more if Uthoff is in foul trouble or hurt

Aaron will get close to 30 min a game
Jok will get close to 25 min a game
Uthoff will get close to 24 min a game
Gessel will get close to 22

Scoring predictions
White 14pts
Jok 13pts
Uthoff 10pts
Olgesby 10pts
Gesell 8pts
Olaseni 8pts
Woodbury 7 pts
Dickerson 5 pts
Uhl 3 pts
Ellingson/Clemmons/Meyer will get 4pts total

With White, Woody & Olaseni, our front court should be pretty imposing next year, particularly if Fran can add either Willie Atwood or Anthony Lee from Temple..

It's the back court that I have more concerns with, but hopefully Trey Dickerson is the remedy there. I'm also hoping for Jok and Uthoff to have breakout years next year at the SF/Wing positions to help pick up some of the slack that we lose with Marble's PPG going out the door.

I don't expect to see Ogelsby and Jok start togther.... too big of a defensive liability at both spots.

According to Dickerson's twitter feed, Atwood has Iowa HIGH on his list. I think he is coming to Iowa City folks!

I believe that Kyle Meyer could be a force inside next year as a power forward and center. He averaged a double double in high school. His rebounding and physical defense inside could help this team a lot.

What has Kyle Meyer ever done to make you think he could be a "force"? He averaged a double/double in HS? C'mon Man! I heard McCaffery say once this year that he doesn't recruit "projects". Then how do you explain the recruitment of Kyle Meyer?
