NEXT YEAR WITHOUT MARBLE

He is not a great player but really the only one that can make things happen on his own. A go to guy. We replace him with the 3 players we have recruited last year and this year and we could be in trouble.
We desperately need to find a JC or transfer that is a difference maker or we take a step backward

Gesell is getting pretty darn good at creating on his own. Just can't shoot for **** right now.

White can create with his first step as well. Doesn't have great handles obviously but he can beat a big to the hoop.

I love Marble and his pure athleticism, but I don't see as big a drop-off next year without him as people think. I think Jok can step in to provide that athleticism and perhaps without Marble, White will step up, because I still he is tentative even though he has flashed outstanding physical play this year.

I like Marble a lot and he's crucial to our success. But these are his numbers over the past 5 games which must improve for us to be our best moving forward...9 and 14. These are his assists and turnovers over the past 5 games. I don't know if he's gotten selfish or is focusing on contributing more points and forgetting to look for his teammates. I know with absolute certainty that he did not pass to White in transition for a dunk at least once against Michigan, Northwestern and Michigan State...play was there and he drove or shot instead.

Backcourt last night (Gesell, Marble, Oglesby and Clemmons) - 3 assists and 3 turnovers... Of course Michigan State has the best backcourt in the Big 10 on both ends of the court IMO.

Anyone that routinely reads my posts knows I don't bash players and love all of the guys on the team. I'm not down on Marble or anyone else. I'm just pointing out something that will help us tremendously when Marble gets his entire game going at the same time.

Mixed feelings about the loss of Dev. Great kid and he's been key in many games. But we rely way too much on the NBA-style clear out for him to go 1 on 1. The end of regulation last night a good example. I think his absence may actually help the team grow.

I want to counter with a positive for Marble. He's made 18-21 free throws over the past 3 games for 85.7%. He was on Harris quite bit as I recall and it was the 1st time all season Harris hasn't been in double figures...and it was a 45 minute game. His 3 previous games he had 23, 24 and 27.

Don't misunderstand my comments. Your points are solid. Dev has been a great player, and at times he was THE guy that stepped up for the Hawks. He's a key cog in the resurgence of the program under Fran. I just think the iso play hasn't always worked. I'd like to see Fran design more actual plays for those situations. (again, last night is a perfect example)

Dev & Roy are both great Hawkeyes.

We're good. I knew you weren't being negative. I was countering my observation with a positive observation. No worries!

I cannot fault Dev last night. Wish for his confidence, he could HIT a game winner one of these times....

Whitey - my man - you gotta show up

I don't consider 10 and 7 while going 8-8 at the line not showing up. He can post up hard but he can't force guys to give him the ball.

Exactly. If anyone on the team had been willing and able to feed him in the post, he could've scored 30+. All the shot opportunities he got, he created on his own, and all the other opportunities he had, his teammates squandered.

What we need is more playmakers, particularly for the system Fran runs. This is why he's been after a PG, currently Dickerson, and now Atwood at PF. I do think Gesell will become stronger at PG. Uthoff and Jok will become important players at some point in their careers. But in the MSU game, it became obvious we need more playmakers at guard and in the frontcourt. If GO and/or Woody can't become consistent threats, Basabe in the post is a limited option although he's productive at PF. And, of course, he's gone next year along with Marble. Uhl and Ellingson will make contributions in their careers but I agree that we need more immediate impact guys. I'm hoping for Dickerson and Atwood for next year and Eric Davis and Joseph Toye in 2015 but then I like to dream.

stupid thread.

let's figure out how to close tight games WITH marble before crying about next season.

Love watching Dev as much as I loved watching his old man. But I'm not seeing the sky falling when his eligibility is done. We have other players who can step up. I think with Dev gone you'll see more of the floor leadership fall to Mike, who I think will do a better job than Dev of getting his teammates involved. You may not see one go-to player next year but several finishing options that I think could be a big positive.

The burden this year too often has fallen to one player, and unfortunately he hasn't always been able to deliver.

Dev is the best player on the team, and the only guy that can consistently get his own shot and finish. Mike can't, White isn't a good enough shooter to force defenders to close out on him, Clemmons is a mess, while Josh/Jok are shooters.

People need to come up with a narrative of toughness, or clutch, or being a gamer, or swagger, to explain why a good look didn't drop at the end of the game.
