Next on the list after getting a new coach....

Rawkhawk I completely agree with you and those who don't agree don't attend games anyway. You are dead right about PerMar. I have been to many Big Ten arenas and their security people are very capable, courteous, and helpful. PerMar hires part-time minimum wage folks and gives them virtually no training. I have been told on several occasions by these folks to "sit down" or "quiet down".

I really would hope you would send these comments to Barta. He is probably tired of hearing from me.

My beef with Per Mar is that I don't think they do a good job telling their people exactly what they are expected to do. Last year we had a Per Mar guy stand in front of us in the aisle and watch the game for three hours. Not only did he not provide any assistance/security/whatever, he didn't move and blocked everyone's view (this was at the end of the aisle along the field rail - we sit low behind the team). He spent the whole day along the rail staring at the players. He was an older guy and no one gave him any grief - heck he could've sat with us if he wanted to - but we wondered if he was just wearing the jacket to sneak down to our section. Oh well, whatever.

As for Haddy and Klatt, in my opinion they are out of their depth at this level. Nice guys but c'mon. Is this an elite University in a name conference? If so wouldn't we want to hire the best people that... oh forget it. Nevermind.

Start replacing administration.

First on my list is Rick Klatt. It is his job to provide the marketing and game-day experience and he has failed and failed MISERABLY. If free student tickets and $1 hot dogs are the best he can do, then just fire him and replace him with interns. Seriously.

Second on my list is Phil Haddy. What he did at the Barta press conference is indicative, in my opinion, of his inability to function in that position. There have been numerous other things as well that have rubbed me the wrong way, but there definitely needs to be a change.

You hi-jacked your own thread Rawk! You are right on about the drooling incompetent Klatt.

A Haddy debate might have made this a valuable thread.

But bringing up Per-Mar buries your lede, and that is the only part to which people are responding.

I was tempted to go on a diatribe about firing fans and how ridiculous it is that we have to call for everyone's job...which it is...if you work in the athletic department at the U of I...your job will be called for by some contingent of the fan base at some point...probably a few points.

But I can at least see the point with the marketing of the Hawkeyes. We've probably got some old dogs in the department who are used to being a really big deal and have probably forgotten how to do actual work. The marketing of all of our teams has been pretty poor. A marketing director should coming up with ideas on how to better market a team - especially one in dire need like our basketball team - not deciding which billboard in Cedar Rapids he's going to overpay for with little to no results.

I was at the game at the Metrodome when the goal posts mysteriously showed up missing...talk about awesome security guards. It was the same 70 year old men and women who police Iowa basketball games...and when they're asked to actually do something...they're utterly incapable.

You had lots of drunken Iowa fans running onto the field...and some of the more limber security guards decided to try their hand at LB and see if they could make some tackles. The one image that sticks in my mind was a 70 year old guy trying to tackle a college-aged student who was running onto the field.

College student jukes left...he jukes right...he goes right at him. Old guy is standing his ground and he goes for the tackle. He hits him but can't wrap up and bring him down...oh no he's slipping...ouch he hit the ground but he might still have an ankle. College student slows down and shakes his leg to get the old man off of him...and he's free. Uh oh...I don't know if old man is getting up from this one.

IMHO Klatt and Haddy were ill-equipped for their jobs when they got them back when the Earth's crust was still cooling and have only fallen further behind as the demands of serving a big-time Athletics Department have grown.

Didn't Rick Klatt give us this infamous logo?

I am really wondering what insight into the business management aspects of major college athletics you guys have to demonstrate that the people in high positions are out of their depths.

My guess is none, but I have been wrong before.

Usually I'm in your boat on this topic...who are fans to judge people when they have no clue what these people do on a daily basis, etc.

In the case of Iowa's marketing of its athletic programs...I have to say that it has been done poorly. Anybody can market a program when it's at its peak...right now is when a marketing director proves his worth. I wouldn't know much...but I would know that this program has not been marketed to the public very well.

In your opinion...has this basketball program been marketed well?

You know what Hobbie, you're absolutely right!! I'm not aware of that ever happening before.....maybe I've set some kind of record. :D

Alright everyone, ignore the Per Mar references as we all know they suck! Just stick to Klatt and Haddy.

Further, we have no idea what kind of restictions these guys operate under--they could have some of the best ideas in the sports world only to have them shot down by their boss. Who knows? Do we even know what budget they are allotted? Just an awful lot of unknowns to be calling for somebody's head. Even if you don't like the end result, in these cases it is difficult to know if you are assigning blame to the correct persons.
