New Mexico/Alford Live Look-in

I was at Carver Hawkeye for the opening of basketball practice was back when Steve started here. As I recall, the arena was rocking. I'm tired of hearing how Iowa isn't a basketball school.

You mean this?

Say what you want...I thought that was f'n awesome. If you have hatred for someone you can find anything to hate on them about...but at the time that happened...those who either like Alford or were neutral on him and were Hawkeye fans were loving it.

I honestly don't understand all of the hate towards Alford. He did a great job this year in a very tough conference, and his team deserves everything they have coming to them.

And hopefully that includes a last second defeat a la their conference tournament game vs SDSU; BTW the Mountain West is not that tough.

great for him the guy looks like he is happy all the time when i see him on tv. too bad it didn't workout for us

Who is a tough conference? MWC got 4 teams in...they have two teams in the top 15.

I thought it was a stupid move for a coach to try to one up a player. (Shada is right, this was after an Iowa dunk and MSU called timeout - Thomas did the flex as well). Some people call it being competitive. I think he shows a bit of arrogance that needs to be held back when you are the coach (my opinion).

WHO FREAKIN CARES!

What's a 3 seed, but a sure fire first round win, and a disappointing exit in the second round........well maybe not so definite first round win:)

Who cares. He was given what, 8 or 9 years here to win, and he didn't. Glad he is gone. The Boy Wonder wouldn't have done much better these last three years.

Gotta say that I am not a true SA hater. My pre-bracket has NM beating Montana and then Marquette to reach sweet 16. Losing to West Virginia after that. But I usually don't do so well in the pools I participate in. So may not be looking good for them.

If Alford was at Iowa today, then Jake Kelly, Dairese Gary, and Darrington Hobson would be in the Hawkeyes starting 5, along with Gatens and Cole. They would have been dancing with about 22 wins.

I know I'll be executed for this on this board but I'm cheering for New Mexico. I hated the fans that ran him off then, and I hate them now. Us bringing in Lick instead of Stan Heath also frustrated me. I enjoy watching all the Alford haters stew in misery, b/c at the end of the day Alford was a solid coach and learning on the job. He would've taken Iowa to the next level and we pushed him out, just sad. Watch his games, he changed zones at the right time, went man to man, the difference b/w new Alford and late Iowa Alford is he learned how to coach/call a game on D. Let the hate fest for me begin.

I don't hate you for saying this. I do think you are giving SA too much credit. Craig Neal did almost all the in game coaching. I remember plenty of times down the stretch of tight games when Neal would be in the huddle and Alford was hanging out outside the huddle with the bench players. As for me hating Alford, I supported him until the day he trashed Iowa on the way out the door. At that point, I gave him the double bird and haven't forgiven him since. I probably never will. At this point, I agree with Chris Hassel. "Steve Alford is a ******."

My thought is... Can you blame him for being frustrated with Iowa fans. He had just taken a team with no NBA talent to the tourney as a 3 seed. And sure there was a late game collapse in the tournament but you have to see the forest for the trees. He had the ability to recruit (albeit Pearl is proving he is even better here), and I'm willing to be patient if there is progress. I remember going to Iowa football games in 1999 and while most were frustrated b/c sucked, I pointed out the how well we game planned and if we had the talent to match the coaching we'd be a top program, that's how I felt about Iowa bball at the end of Alford it was tantamount to shoving Ferentz out the door in 1999

I agree with part of what you said. But are you comparing Ferentz Year One to Alford Year Eight? I had season tickets for football in 1999, and I definitely remember that. I always said give the guy four years, and see what happens. Same thing applies in basketball. The other part is that when Ferentz took over, Hayden had begun the process of burying the football program. When Alford took over the bball program, it was already at a high level. His job was to take it even higher. Ferentz and Alford went opposite directions. But this debate is about three years old now. I respect your opinion. I just slightly disagree.

Get over it people... we need to stop acting like the prom queen that gained 75 lbs and is jealous of everyone.

Regardless of my feelings about Alford then or now, we fans (yeah, me too) are definitely starting to resemble that remark. If we have to gain 75 lbs and be jealous of everyone, can't we at least be...

How did that one sit with everyone..:(

#3 Seed for New Mexico

Sits fine with me. Alford had nine seasons to prove himself at Iowa. He could not compete on a day in and day out schedule against Big 10 competition. Alford positioned his move to New Mexico like it was his option and he chose to leave Iowa for New Mexico. No, the bottomline is he knew he was going to be shown the door at Iowa and wanted to save face. Because we know Alford is a Marketing machine and is all about his image.

I am glad he is no longer at Iowa. Why? Because he had nine years to create a consistent, competitive team and he failed. Coaching in the Mountain West ... well, that is not the Big 10. Yes, he beat some rated teams. But night in and night out, he is not going to face the Ohio States, Michigan States, etc. Just wait til the tourney starts ... San Diego State already downed New Mexico in the Mountain West tournament ... Give Boy Wonder til about Thursday or Friday to be out of the tournament.
