New local sports talk show on 1600KGYM CR/IC areas

I heard on 1600ESPN yesterday that they are rolling out a new local sports talk show in evening drive M-F. It sounds like they hired Balbinot when KXIC let him go and have paired him up with Brommelcamp? (sp) who I think used to do stuff for the IC PC.

It sounds like it's going to start next week and be heavily focused on the Hawks. It would be nice to have a solid local show in the area.

Good move. Less time talking about Hawkeye Downs, more time talking Hawkeye and Big Ten football.

I think the Gym Class is going to stay around, and be the same as it always has, but this would be a new show in the 3-6 or 4-7 slots.

I agree it would be cool, I think Brommelcamp is tied into some recruiting circles as well so it might spit out some good info on a regular basis.

Glad to hear that the Gym Class will stick around. I really like their focus on high school sports and their normal guests (Mark Ironside, Cal Eldred). At one point 1600 had a drive time show, but that stopped when they started to 2pm Gym Class. This is good news in CR. I wonder if they will do away with the taped delayed Dan Patrick show?

Used to listen to Balbinot on KXIC. He is a good pick up!

In the 'loo area on Wednesday late afternoons, 1650 has an amateur wrestling program. I appreciate that they talk about local wrestlers, but I catch myself wanting to bang my head against the driver's door window. It's just hard to listen to & the topics are limited. Not good for radio.

They didn't say, if I had to guess I'd say they probably move him up to start at noon right after Colin.

My guess:

Mike and Mike 5a-9a
Cowherd 9a-Noon
Dan Patrick Noon-3p
Gym Class 3p-4p
B & B 4p-7p
Horrific White Sox baseball at 7pm

I'd buy this too. Dropping Cowherd makes no sense, he's probably the best they have. My guess is Van Pelt wont make the cut. He does a great show when he's on, but unfortunately he's only there a few days a week.

Patrick live runs something like 8a-11a central. So I don't think they could air him live unless they pre-empt two separate shows which I don't think they will do.

The other part of the scenario I heard (and forgot about until now) was that they were dropping the ESPN shows. Don't know whether that's true or not. We'll see soon, I guess.

Sounds like a good show

The Gym Class is by far the worst radio show ever created. The unintentional comedy is the only thing it has going for it

I really hope they play the Dan Patrick show at noon. Cowherd is great. I hadn't heard anything about 1600 dropping espn, I know a few of the guys there and they hadn't mentioned it.

As far as the Gym Class, they could talk hawkeyes, and local high school sports and I'd be an avid listener. But they never do. They give their opinions on whatever Cowerd was raving about, then have an interview with the women's soccer coach at Mount Mercy, then cap it off with an in depth preview of Hawkeye Downs racing. I can't imagine it has a large audience base.

The gym class is fine for what it is. The Ironside and Cal segments are pretty cool, but I'm excited to see what kind of sports talk the new guys are capable of. Hopefully it will be closer to what KXNO used to do than what the Gym Class is like now.

That would suck. The SVP show is the best show on radio IMO. I love it. Cowherd is a blowhard, I don't care to listen to him.

The Gym Class is the worst.

Jon, does this hurt your chances at moving into the CR market, syndicated, etc.?

If I get back into daily talk radio it will have to be perfect fit as far as on air partner, time slot and a few other things. I Have listened to a few pitches during the last three months, but nothing I would call the perfect fit for me. I am not in any hurry.
