New B1G Bowl Tie Has Orange Glow

Sounds like the Orange Bowl will become even more meaningless after the playoff starts. College Football desperately needs a 8 or 16 team playoff.

Really?

I dont get how we have a bunch of negative nancies after this good news. Getting a orange bowl tie-in is a big deal and you guys are complaining. Once the 4 team play-off starts its only two more games to crown a national champ. A lot of fans like the bowl games and think its neat/original, and they would like to preserve it if they could.
If Iowa finishes ranked 5th and plays the second best team in the PAC12 in the rose, I'd be stoked. Its still the rose bowl. How can any whine about that. Or lets say Iowa finishes 8th and goes to the orange bowl, your going to whine about going to south beach in January? Good thing you old folks arent the ones playing the game, the kids wanna play in a bowl game, they want the free swag that comes with playing in these games, they wanna be somewhere warm in January, and they wanna play for a historic trophy. Everyone wants the Crystal Ball, but at least with this format it ist NC or bust.

So you think Iowa players would rather play in the Orange Bowl, a game no one but Iowa fans would care about, than be a part of an expanded 8 team playoff? If that's true, than we have the wrong kind of players on this team.

While I wouldn't say pipe dream, Iowa would have factored into the Final Four discussion just two times in the last 27 years or so. 1985 & 2002. Iowa was 4th in the final regular season AP Poll in 1985....and probably back to the early 1960's for that matter

Jon, you're correct, I overstated things. But 80 to 90% of the time, Iowa fans will begin the season hoping for a good year, not thinking we have a shot at the final four. We are looking at 8 win seasons and hopefully 9 or 10, and if things really really break right, 11 or 12 wins and a playoff berth.

But we're not going to stop attending the Insight Bowl or Outback Bowl because there are four rather than two teams in the playoffs.

in the 4 team playoff, everyone still cares about the bowl games. What else are you going to do January in Iowa? Snowboard? No mountains. Snowmobile? usually not enough snow? Hang out on the beach? Iowa doesn't have beaches. BBQ and drink beers outside? Too cold.

Me and my buddies get together for abut every bowl game during bowl week and head to a house, bowling alley, bar, or sports restaurant and watch the game. Its something to do. You expand the playoffs to 8 and people will still watch the bowl games. I'll watch BYU vs Utah all day before watching dancing with the stars.

Theres more money to be made with the 4 team playoff because it still protects the integrity of crown a true NC while preserving something very historic and unique that only college football has.

I concur. And it won't be long until the calls coming into post game shows will be 'FURRENTZ gets paid too much money to not be in the final four at least once every four years.' ;)

Meh. Never cared for the Orange Bowl all that much. When I was growing up, the Rose Bowl was the best, followed by the Cotton Bowl. The Orange and Sugar were usually on at the same time, so would watch the Orange.

Of course, that was before there were a dozen bowl games on New Year's Day.

The Orange Bowl is teh Jan Brady of the "Big Time" bowls.

The bowl games will be the equivalent of playing in the NIT. Meaningless, like they already are.

Sure. Im sure the NIT champion makes a meaningless couple million like the Rose, Orange, Sugar, Feista will. Im sure ESPN is working out a big time TV contract to buy all the meaningful games of the NIT like they did with the bowl games. You guys can act like its better to have a 8 team playoff with 7 games total. I'm sure they get a lot more viewership than the 9 games that are in place for ratings....

"#10 Iowa vs #9VaTech is on tonight guys. Its prime time with the orange bowl trophy on the line. You guys wanna meet up and watch the game somewhere?" - Me

"No! I wanna rest up for the playoff games. I cant handle that much college football. Plus I have to feed my Lama. And really there's so many better things to do in the Midwest during January. I hate football, and these bowl games are like the NIT. Hey you kids get off my lawn" - Hawkeyenation poster

Im done on this argument.

Here's the deal. I love bowl trips. But I think I would just as soon go to Outback over the OB. If it isn't the Rose, I just don't really care what it is. Except I refuse to go to Phoenix.

Yea, but when recruiting a kid that walks into your office and see's the Outback trophy he says "what's this from?"

but if he walk in and see's the Orange Bowl trophy, he doesn't say anything. He already knows. And what he knows is, that trophy is a big deal and means something. There are few trophies that have that effect, and If we dont win crystal ball, I'd like to win the next best thing at least. This tie-in is a big deal for the B1G.

Heck Im willing to bet, that other than the Heisman trophy and the crystal ball more fans could recognize the Orange Bowl trophy than any other trophy out there for college.

No, a bowl is still the best every team can hope for at the end of the year. Obviously some bowls are better than others, but now with the playoff every bowl becomes a consolation prize. Hard to get a fan base fired up for that when they have playoff hopes every year.

Bowls = dead man walking

There is a two team playoff right now. It expands to four teams in a couple years. Not the sea change that you want to pretend it is. For schools like Iowa, the playoff is frankly a pipe dream.

If you think its going to stop at 4 your out of touch with reality and if you think that anyone is going to care about bowls after the fans get a taste of a playoff your out of touch with reality.

Iowa has a better chance of making a playoff than a national title game.

Then I am sure you won't be watching them, right? Or rather, you haven't watched any of them and won't in the future.

Now that there is a playoff, the bowl games are the equivalent of all the NFL teams that dont make the playoffs scrimmaging each other at a neutral site, talk about excitement!! I watched Iowa last year and that was it. The bowl structure is the most ridiculous thing in sport worldwide and it will lose steam every year the playoff is involved from here on out.

Call me when the bowls cease to be.

The NIT was big for a while too, even after the NCAA had become the premier postseason tournament. The popularity of bowls will decline once the playoff begins and they will continue to decline as the playoffs expand. There's no going back now, the bowls will become less and less relevent each year. The gap between haves and have nots is going to continue to grow as well, and Iowa will be on the wrong side of that.

Why did you watch it if the bowls are meaningless? I am trying to think of things I do or spend time on that are meaningless to me, and I can't think of anything just yet.

You've never watched a preseason NFL game Jon? How about a baseball game between two teams out of the pennant race?
