New Assistant Coach

Iowa is on the search for a new coach, With Billy Taylor leaving Iowa. He was Director of Basketball Operations, which is essentially another coaching position.

I would like to see someone with Iowa ties. But more importantly, I would like us to grab a young aspiring coach. One that plans and has the potential to be a HC someday. Someone with fire and drive, and can recruit. A young Fran would be good to see.

Any suggestions or thoughts on our new coach?

Director of basketball ops can't recruit.

They can recruit, just not off campus visits... Maybe shuffle the deck? Have one stay planted at home, and then get a road warrior to recruit the country. A Bret Bielema of basketball?? A 1999 Bret Bielema that is, not the 2005+ Sch___k Bret Bielema...

Someone with Iowa ties that can help Iowa's social media recruiting. I think Iowa football finally figured out the importance of social media. Has Iowa basketball? If this position can recruit, just not off campus, then make him someone that spends his days on social media and in charge of contacting recruits.

Nothing a bad idea. See who we can get "in" with, then send the coaches to reel them in.

Director of operations isn't really a coach and can't recruit. So I don't much care who they get as long as it isn't one of KF's relatives.:p

Maybe Jeff Horner, current asst. at North Dakota or Dean Oliver, current asst. at Illinois St. would be possibilities I think.

Horner was promoted from Ops Director at ND to assistant coach before last season. He was interested in Iowa Ops Director position when it went to Ryan Bowen. He might be interested. Oliver is a multi-year assistant at a Valley school. Not sure he'd want to drop down to ops director from that.

Here's an article on this as a matter of fact. Leistikow doesn't seem to consider Director of Basketball opps an assistant coaching position anyway...

The Director of Ops still plays an active role in recruiting. NCAA regulations prohibit the director of operations to recruit off-campus, they are allowed to recruit on-campus and are responsible for daily recruiting operations - planning & coordinating visits and keeping keeping track of potential prospects. So, that is a valuable position to the team, recruiting, and the future of the team...

That is an important position. Maybe not an official "assistant". But better than a non-assistant headcoach on a mid-major. Especially if you can pull in recruits. 90% of recruiting is over the phone and social media. The latter something that Dillard, Fran and Speraw probably aren't as hip with.

I was not aware of this. Thank you for the education.
