Need to Upgrade Nonconference Schedule

I see mention of SOS, and I just don't see that as an issue in FB. It is much more of a basketball term.

Iowa's post-season is based on two things...Wins and Fan Base.

Wins gets us into a group and the our fan base compared to others in said group dictates where we go. It is about money not SOS.

You don't think our ability to attract recruits (which impacts Ws and Ls) is impacted by our schedule? Iowa-ISU has ZERO pull outside the state.

First thing, we are Iowa. We probably are never bringing 5 stars out of Florida. Iowa City is not Las Vegas. It gets cold, real cold. If anyone on this thread thinks playing at Ames last season did not help prep the team for playing road games in the big ten you are crazy. I was at the game in Ames and it was loud. I was also at the Wisconsin game in Madison and the ISU game was louder than the Badger game.

I find it comical that some want to run away from the ISU game because in recent history we have lost about half the games. So yeah lets go schedule tougher competition away or at a neutral site????????????!!!!!???????????

Who realistically do you think Iowa is going to schedule instead??? Are we playing Vanderbilt? Hayden used to schedule some of those and we lost more than our fair share of them, especially on the road trips.

I have never read in any recruiting article anyone has ever written that a kid chose Iowa because we play XYZ team. Never.

I like the annual Iowa state game. It is a game that should be played every year. It's a natural rivalry. The only 2 P5 schools from the same state should play each other every year. You want the 2 schools to play each other.

It's the cream puffs and cupcakes that make no sense. They need to go. And the obsession with the 7th home game needs to go. When it gets in the way of scheduling decent competitive games against quality opponents, it turns off fans and recruits.

What about settling the scores and finally putting to rest our long held hatred for Boston College, UConn, Maine and UMass? why can't we schedule games against these teams and kick their ***** once and for all.

I would like to know if the TV money received for Iowa for playing a Power5 team at a neutral site exeeds the gate receipts at Kinnick.

Was thinking the same thing. Season opener neutral site games in Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City. I would do this for recruiting. What are the 3 large metro areas closest to Iowa's most important recruiting areas? Harbaugh has a good idea of having spring practice in FL for 1 week. That makes perfect sense. If we can't get the recruits to come to us, we need to go to them. We should have 1 week of spring ball somewhere in Texas. Let the high schoolers visit practices, if that is allowed.

I mentioned earlier that Iowa would probably lose at least half of these games. Iowa State series hasn't been all that much better anyway.

I do not expect Iowa to recruit top 10 or even top 20 classes on a regular basis. Somewhere consistently in the 30s sounds about right. Hard to compete with programs that offer some combination of better weather, location, academic pedigree, and winning tradition. But we should be able to compete at some level for recruits with every team in the big ten west and probably all but Michigan, OSU, and Penn State in the east. Playing Iowa State does nothing for a recruit's perception of our football program. I guarantee that Wisconsin is touting their matchup with LSU to recruits, and I guarantee that many of those recruits will watch. Are we honestly telling recruits to tune into Iowa-ISU? Would be a great game to host recruits at, but the TV pull is zilch.

Agree that the atmosphere is dynamic and is good prep for road games in the B1G, but a nonconference game against a quality power 5 program would be as well.

Wisconsin managed to schedule Bama and LSU. Minnesota scheduled TCU and USC. Nebraska scheduled Miami. Scheduling these opponents might be more difficult from a logistical standpoint than I assume, but our peers have done so.

If the B1G had not moved to 9 game conference schedule (which is a good thing), then this issue would be much easier. But as it stands now, the way I see it is Iowa will never play another Power 5 opponent in the nonconference except for ISU. To my knowledge there are none on our future schedules. Isn't that a little saddening?

Actually the ninth Big Ten game is our upgraded schedule. More of Michigan and Michigan State in the future please.

This is a fair point. Still nice to play somebody unique every now and then.
Next year's schedule is embarrassing. We should play at least one solid team every year home and away. If Iowa St. has to go so be it. Like an earlier poster said this game is a lose/lose proposition for Iowa.

They aren't going to drop the seventh home game. Period. End of discussion on that point.

If Iowa goes back being 7-5 every year playing 2 cream puffs each year, attendance will continue to drop. Fans do not want to see Iowa play Crappy creampuff teams. Fans like the Iowa state game and want to keep it. The only way to do that is to go 6 home games.

Period. End of discussion. (I guess that's how we end our posts now, even though that never seems to end the discussion)

Cream puffs and a lot of other things won't matter if Iowa goes back to 7-5 or below on a regular basis.

typical ferentz failing to upgrade the non conference schedule now we won't get into the playoffs ahead of an undefeated sec team and the boston college eagles fans can still take shots at us like were scared.

I don't mind the isu game/rivalry. I would simply like them to start doing better in their conference and at least become a .500 team so it isn't a lose/lose scenario for Iowa.

Playing them, win or lose, when Danny Mac was there didn't hurt us regarding sos.

never...NEVER... schedule an FCS team that has a shot to upset you. NDSU for example. Better to schedule a lousy FBS team like Kansas.

FCS teams have no place on our schedule, especially a program that could pull the upset. It's a no win.

Lloyd Carr, Is that you.

I'm not sure I'd want to open the season against a team like NDSU. The top FCS teams can bite back, as we learned against Northern Iowa in 2009.

On the other hand, I would rather watch Iowa play NDSU, Northern Iowa, or even Illinois State rather than the bottom of the MAC or MWC.

From those conferences Kent State, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, UMass, Wyoming, and Hawaii are beyond pathetic. I really don't see the point in playing Wyoming, a team that recently lost to Eastern Michigan by a large margin . Unfortunately, the wheels have fallen off at both Miami of Ohio and North Texas so both those match-ups are a big disappointment.

I had a dream last night that Iowa FB beat a team 108 to 9. I don't usually dream about the Hawkeyes.
