Nebraska Spring Game

Let me start off by saying that I lived in Omaha for 5 years and had way too much of the Big Red sh*t shoved down my throat.

I played golf today with a friend that is a big Nebraska FB supporter and he said that they are expecting 70,000 for the spring game this weekend.

OK that's nice but get this......

Nebraska is charging and people are paying $10 a ticket to the game.

Does this seem like a money grab or is it a good idea? Does KF look at that and say hey we can raise some money for the program by doing the same and run a true game?

I say keep the boys healthy, take your concession money and call it good.

What you say?

I would like to see it more of a game, but not for the money, just because after attending the spring practice the past three years, you get bored sitting through stretching/drills.

Its nice being in Kinnick though.

I'm looking forward to attending whatever Coach Ferentz has planned for the day.

Whether it's a practice or a spring scrimmage, I look forward to seeing what the younger guys can do. I always pick up something from my observations and my Hawkeye friends observations of the practice/scrimmage/spring game.

The spring game in Nebraska is a statewide event. There is nothing else to do I guess. Now when it comes to charging for admission, I dont believe that is the right practice. If the people will pay the money, Nebraska will keep charging. I wonder how many program out there actually charge for their spring game/practice.......

Iowa will never have a big spring game. First Iowa does not even have a game. Second, they keep things so closed off that it is hard to get excited about the program.

Been there, done that.

I bought two tickets to the Nebraska spring game last year, took a friend, and rode a chartered bus from North Platte (yea, they do stuff like that for spring games out here). This year, a gal from Grand Island told me I could go with her family and she'd buy my ticket; but I declined and will stay home (last year's game bored the s*it out of me). Most exciting moment was when they released 30,000 red ballons with the first first down (that is an in season tradition, as well).

There was one running back that really did look exciting (Medoza) but Pellini kicked him off the team the third week of fall drills.

Seven years ago a boy I coached in high school was starting at s. safety for the red team; and I watched the game at a "Keno parlor" on pay-per-view (yeah they do that stuff out there too).

Ferentz should keep things just as they are at Iowa for spring practice conclusion...a nice free family event, and his recent autumn results show that he must be doing something right!

Well you were certainly right about Iowa not having a spring game...one out of 2 ain't bad! Nice job!

I remember the first couple years when Ferentz had all his haters and not having a spring game was one of the things that those haters cried about. That really seemed to make them angry.

I don't care either way. If Ferentz thinks this is the the best way to run it, fine with me.

Okay, he's off if you take what he said word for word. But I'm guessing he means they keep things (particularly in the spring) so closed off that people don't even know about any new players that are looking impressive. There's not any "player to watch" kind of thing. Plus, the university doesn't market the event AT ALL. They release a statement saying when, and that's it. No hype, no nothing. That will always prevent a big turnout (Big meaning 30k or more).

I've always had a problem with the whole cornhusker thing..I grew up on a farm growing corn and I'm proud of that. Iowan's grow corn. Once you start driving west in Nebraska you stop seeing corn and see miles of nothing. I don't have the stats but I doubt Nebraska is near the top in corn production.

That's a rhetorical situation, of course nobody would ever have a reason to drive west into Nebraska.

I also grew up on a farm, but as you go west in Nebraska you see more and more corn, fueled by more and more irrigators. They are growing corn in colorado and Wyoming now. Also, Nebraska is #3 in corn production (11% of U.S. production) behind Iowa (18%) and Illinois (17.5%). they are also 5th in soybean production. (Iowa is number 1)

Wasn't trying to prove you wrong. You made me curious so I looked up some stats, and felt inclined to share with HawkeyeNation. Especially the fact that Iowa is #1 :D

With as involved as KF is with the hospital, I would think they could have a free will donation at the door and donate it to the children's hospital or some other worth while charity in the Iowa City area. I would have no problem paying $5 or $10 to see some live football, even if it's only a controlled practice.

I think I remember seeing the breakdown of all Big 12 schools and most of them charge $5 for their game. Nebraska is the highest in the nation if I am not mistaken -but they do it because they can. People here are nuts (I live in Lincoln). I think ISU and Baylor are the only 2 that don't charge anything in the Big 12 but I could certainly be forgetting a school. Do any of the Big 10 schools charge?

I used to love the old spring game. It was a always a fun event and I was disappointed when it ended. It's a five hour drive for me so I don't go back for the practice. I'd be happy to attend if I lived closer.

That being said, if Nebraska wants to charge for their game and people want to pay it, it's hard to find a negative.

OSU charged $5 a ticket last year and had over 95,000 people attend. This year it's $10 at the stadium and $5 if you get your ticket ahead of time. I believe most of the money brought in was given to local charities.
