Nebraska is going to upset MSU this Sat (change my mind)

Let's just agree to hate Nebby and wish them many losses. They've played Iowa better than they should have and should have lost the last time they beat Iowa.

I am rooting for Frost to flame out and die this season for several reasons:

1. Short term gratification. I enjoy every Nebbie loss.
2. Long term, if Frost does turn it around and build a winner, he will never leave his alma mater.
3. Frost's replacement could be just as sucky. Again, crapshoot.
4. If an outside coach is hired and is the next big thing, there are a dozen better college jobs out there and every NFL gig is better than coaching in Lincoln, so he might leave.

In short, I hope Frost loses to MSU, then NW, and then he is done like a cooked goose.

Yeah, they are nothing. It’s all mostly bullshit once you get past the top 3-4 recruits in each position, which an Iowa or nebraska aren’t going to get.

Show me the correlation of teams’ recruiting rankings with similar winning percentages to Iowa or nebraska. It’s completely all over the board. Of course Georgia and Clemson and teams like that are going to correlate, they get the very top of the class. After that it’s basically arguing about 23rd vs 24th best or whatever, which is all 100% conjecture. Especially since none of these “reporters” have ever seen the kids in question in person or met them at all, basing everything by a few videos on hudl.
Disagree. Every football fan I know disagrees. Seems as tough most posters on this Board disagree. And, hundreds of thousands of fans and sports commentators who regularly review, consume, and cite to recruiting rankings from various services disagree. Just because a human measuring tool is imperfect does not mean it is irrelevant. But, you are entitled to your extreme minority opinion. That is what message boards are all about.

Maybe you missed this: https://www.agweb.com/news/business...es-iowa-sold-22600-acre-sets-new-state-record

Once, Twice, Sold! 80 Acres in Iowa Sold for $22,600 Per Acre, Sets New State Record

Dang that was pretty recently too. I remember 10-12 yrs ago when prices had hit 20k plus in NW Iowa for some land. But it'd dropped to closer to 10 since then I thought in that neck of the woods. That whole wind turbine being on the property was the game changer to that piece. I can't imagine 80 acres of just farm ground could have that kind of value now but what do I know? Times are crazy

Then show me something substantive that correlates recruiting class ranking outside the top ten teams that relates to win/loss performance.

For example, show us how teams in the 15-40 spots in recruiting rankings finish and how that correlates to their recruiting ranking?

Recruiting rankings should be viewed as a snapshot. As in, this is how ready this player is to play college football.right now. Recruiting rankings don't rank based on things like teachability, dedication, and drive. You know, the stuff that makes kids develop better than others.

Wisconsin and Iowa have made their names living in the space of the developability of kids.

Jeezus Fry, can I use large font and double spaced lines for this 200 page report? Is it graded?

Yes, and yes.

Obviously it was a rhetorical question, but the point remains. After the top few teams whose recruits are made up of the most elite players, the rest is just noise. Same thing as the AP poll. Who can make an argument that a team is 23rd best vs 2nd best?

Seriously though, check out the bios of the people doing these rankings, they're hilarious. It's quite obvious that what they do is look at a 1:13 of Hudl film without knowing anything else about the kids whatsoever. Again, I'm talking about the vast majority of recruits that nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin type teams get. 2 and 3 "stars," of which there are thousands. These guys don't know the quality of their HS opponents, coachability, character, intelligence, or a thousand other different things that go into it. It's literally impossible for them to know anything beyond a few minutes of film for these non-4 and 5 star guys because there just isn't enough time in the world.

As an Iowa fan I totally get where you are coming from. But keep in mind we've been spoiled by a coaching staff that thrives on taking 3 star recruits and turning them into NFL prospect players. We also happen to be discussing Nebraska who does the exact opposite, takes 4 star recruits and turns them into no name players. These are 2 examples that go against the trend. Typically schools that have the top recruiting classes wind up being better than those that don't. It's why these recruiting services became so damn popular, if they were wrong all the time nobody would give a shit about them.

But they are not perfect, looking at them should be pretty much for entertainment. I'll never forget that 2005 recruiting class Iowa had, filled with 4/5 star recruits and ranked in the top 10. The first couple of years that class was a dud, although there were players from that class that contributed to the Orange Bowl victory in 2009. It proved to me that when it came to this coaching staff to pretty much throw out the recruiting rankings. Having said that it's still nice when a 5 star AJ Epenesa signs with Iowa, I don't think Iowa should be turning away from those types of recruits.

LOL. Stop it. As Fry said, he asked a rhetorical question. He didn't want an actual answer with facts and math. Seriously.

Look, I will concede this much ground to Fry. I suspect that the further you get away from the top schools, the less predictive recruiting is. But, that is sort of like saying that beyond Alabama, Clemson, OSU, and Oklahoma, its a crapshoot on who else might make the playoffs. College football is top heavy, and the rich are always going to rake in the top talent and compete for a title every year. This aint the NFL with its socialistic rules.

But even then, there is a statistically significant correlation between rankings and wins and it is across the board, not just at the top. If not, that scatter shot diagram would just be a screen full of random dots, and not a regression line as it presents.

Anecdotally, most of us know that the math is backed up by common sense. While Iowa and NW and Wisconsin overachieve their talent due to great coaching, and Texas and UCLA underachieve their talent for opposite reasons, for the most part, we see a pretty decent relationship between where you land in the recruiting rankings and where you land in the final rankings.

Que Fry disavowing math.....

Give me a break - It's creampuff week, so I am looking through other games of interest for this weekend.

Could Nebraska win @ MSU this weekend? I (unfortunately) think Nebraska is probably a bit better than people think. Likewise, I think people are probably a bit too high on MSU. It all just seems a bit too perfect to me.

MSU is supposedly a top 20 team, but they are only -5 at home against Nebraska? "Haw-haw, Nebraska sucks!" THAT Nebraska? And home field is worth 3 points, so...hmm.
MSU will win against Lil Debbie. Number 1 Nebraska lost to Illinois with a back up quarterback. I live close to the inbred state...and all of our news is Nebraska. There is so much going on off the field in Nebraska. Scott's home life is on the edge. His wife left him earlier and now that the wolves are out and Scott's infidelities are out there. He has an affinity for young golf cart girls and waitresses at a Lincoln bar. He is also a baby daddy...so new AD is supposedly looking at the moral clause in his contract and if they can get rid of him without paying him. So that is a distraction for him.

Nebraska running game is a disaster (other than Martinez). THey are banged up and not a lot of talent there. They have no play makers on the outside. Their O Line is not a strength like they thought it would be. They have penalties galore with holding and offsides. They also seem to be a group that is not in the best of game shape. The only way they beat anybody is if Martinez goes off...and he won't do that versus a strong defense, and a great defensive coach.

Special teams, even in year 4, is a disaster. From returns to punting, to kick offs to field goals.

Defense is the group that has shown some improvement, but they still wear down and are susceptible to big plays. They are getting a lineman back Saturday but don't think that impacts the game that much. Scott has yet to design a defense that can endure the physicality of B1G play. They simply aren't built to stop a team that wants to play smash mouth offense...they want to play we get the ball and score, we hope you go 3 and out and then we score...and we are happy to trade scores, and score quickly. MSU is built to grind out possessions, and milk the clock and will game plan for Martinez.

THeir schedule is WEAK...have you watched Oklahoma? They honestly are not a top 20 team. Offense spits and sputters, their defense is solid, but built for play in the Big XII. The Buffalo and Fordham games were close much longer than they should have been. Nebraska is undisciplined, and have a grad assistant coaching staff that is not capable of out coaching anybody. I really think Nebraska stays close for a quarter and MSU will start to grind and put a hurt on Martinez. MSU 34 - Nebraska 13

Around here they are all talking about how their coach at MSU told their fanbase to not sell their tickets to Husker Fans. SO now the fanbase is saying game on...we will pack the field like we did when Tucker was at Colorado in 2019. They did pack that stadium vs Colorado...they fail to remember that they lost that game 34-31 and had over 55,000 Nebraska fans there.

LilDebby has the following left on their schedule:
@ Sparty
Home vs NU
Home vs SCum
@ Minney
Home vs Purdue
Home vs O$U
@ Wisky
Home vs Hawks

I see maybe 3-4 wins out of that.

Frost (14-22) will be gone.
If he hasn't lost the team/program, he will soon.

Somewhere, Pelini (67-27) and Solich (58-19 (99 Ntnl champs)) are smiling
Old friend they have a slight chance of beating NW at home and Purdue at home. I firmly believe they can lose all their remaining games. Scott is in hot water in Lincoln right now from his job to his home life.

What's the home life issue?
And who ya calling old? :)

I am not sure if you could call Nebra beating MSU an upset. They are both the same level of meh.
That's my feeling exactly, yet one team is perceived as a dumpster fire while the other has been annointed an early season surprise. In reality, I think they are both pretty meh.

Nebraska used to be a premier destination for coaches...

I have to disagree about them being a premier destination because Devaney came there way back and they were not that good with 7 losing seasons before he arrived. He made them great but then their next coach as you know was Osbourne who was created on Devaney's staff. So really Nebby didnt have to seek out a coach again even when Solich took over. So almost 50 years went by before they brought in Callahan.

Wikipedia says Devaney was Nebby's 4th choice in 1962 so they sure were not a premier destination.
