NCAA Tournament: Greatest Spectacle in Sports

Well, it's here. To me the NCAA tournament is the greatest tournament of any sport. I don't think it should be tampered with any further and in actuality, I think they should do away with the play-in games. Having 64 teams is about the perfect size for the amount of college teams because teams still have to be around .500 in their conference (Power 5). The conference season still has a relationship with the tournament with seeding implications. I think having any more teams would just dilute the tournament and make the regular season less meaningful.

Most if not all teams have a chance to be invited if they can win their conference tournament. Every team has a season to build a resume for an invite. For this reason, I don't feel bad for the bubble teams that do not get invited. They had a chance in the season to make a statement. It's unfortunate for some teams, but, it is what it is.

Again, I don't think it should be tampered with as is perfect just the way it is.

They need to start playing the semi-final consolation game again. I don't know why they stopped playing it prior to the finals.

Late September, early October is my favorite time of year, but the tournament is a close second.

I agree on the NCAA Tournament being 64 teams.. It was absolute perfection. Not that the extra 4 teams really matters much, but I kinda feel sorry for those 16 seeds that have to play each other.. I'm going to guess that going to the NCAA Tournament for those teams is all about getting a shot at playing one of the blue bloods rather than losing to another 16 seed. It kinda makes making the NCAA Tournament a little anti-climactic for the loser of the 16/16 "First Four" game (since we're not allowed to say play-in game anymore).

I really don't want to see them expand it past where it is now, though, but I get the feeling that it'll happen eventually. That will really water it all down.. Just like college FB bowl games - it's too easy to get a bowl game now, and it doesn't mean what it used to.

Leave it at 68 teams.

I think 68 teams is about perfect. To get an at-large berth, you have to have an "excellent" season. That is the way it should be.

The NIT at 32 teams also is the perfect number....you must have a "good" season to earn a berth there as well.

The analogy to football: NCAA is a major bowl bid; NIT is a minor bowl bid

I have been watching March Madness since I was little. . I love NC State beating Houston. That was one of my favorite games ever. I love Jimmy Valanova. You should see his face when NC State won! Absolutely amazing. My point is why mess with what works? Just leave it alone!
It's fantastic!

The next 4 days exceed any other sporting event by far...for me. If I had to choose between watching the Thursday through Sunday games of the NCAA Tournament and any other sporting event I would choose the NCAA Tournament. Given a choice between the NCAA Tournament with no Iowa teams and an Iowa bowl game I choose the NCAA Tournament. College basketball has always been my first love.

My favorite NCAA moment is Gary McClain running point for Villanova's title run in 1985 while coked up outta his mind.

You and 10(00000000) others!! :p

I kid because I care.

Fixed it.

This 4 day stretch starting tomorrow is the best 4 days in sports by far. I would argue the super bowl is the best 1-time event, but this weekend is the most exciting for me and its not even close.

The soccer argument...doesn't even register. This is America, we simply don't care what the rest of the world likes or doesn't like. More people have attend the Indy 500 than any soccer game ever. So what? 3rd world countries in Africa and South America love soccer because its the cheapest sport to play.

They need to start playing the semi-final consolation game again. I don't know why they stopped playing it prior to the finals.

Because the last time it was played, a Ronnie Lester-less Iowa went against fellow Big 10 member Purdue in a game nobody--especially Iowa fans--cared about.

And really the only sport they have so it reigns king.

Yeah, its true :)

I don't mind the world cup...I watch the US play in it and I root for them. I just get annoyed when people bring up how its the most popular sport in the world. Like whats that got to do with anything? Avatar out-grossed Star Wars, does that make Avatar a better movie than Star Wars just because more people went to see it? Hell no.

March Madness is the KING of sporting events for me. 64 teams is ideal and the play-in games (yes they are) are a joke.

The next 4 days are like sex, alcohol, sky diving, crack, the rapture, and winning the lottery all rolled up into one event! And if you think you're excited you should feel my nipples. I'm rigid with anticipation and excitement. GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
