NCAA Football Preview - Northern Illinois Huskies

Northern Illinois Huskies Vs. Iowa Hawkeyes 9/1/12: Steve's Free College Football Pick Against the Spread » Sports Chat Place

I just want this season to start. From article:

This should be an interesting one to watch. I think the difference here will be the experience of Ferentz for the Hawkeyes. Iowa plays well in openers as the Hawkeyes have won their last eleven openers, and the Hawks have fared well against the Huskies in the past as Iowa is 7-0 lifetime against Northern Illinois. The Huskies will keep it close for awhile, but I think the depth and overall talent of Iowa shows through in the second half and the Hawks win by double digits.

Steve's pick: Iowa -6

The last time Iowa played Northern Illinois in football … | TheGazette

Here's part of article:

1. Iowa had a pair of 100-yard rushers in the game, Albert Young (23 carries, 144 yards) and Damian Sims (16 carries, 110 yards). What are the odds Iowa has two 100-yard rushers next Saturday?

2. Northern Illinois rushed 21 times for a total of 21 yards.

3. The Hawkeyes had 10 penalties for 173 yards. That could require some research, because it’s hard to imagine Iowa ever having more than 173 penalty yards in a game, and how do you get penalized that many times and still average 17.3 yards per infraction?

4. Cornerback Charles Godfrey had two of Iowa’s three interceptions. Godfrey is now a Carolina Panther. One of his picks came after NIU had driven to the Iowa 8. The other interception was by linebacker Mike Humpal.

5. Iowa quarterback Jake Christensen didn’t get picked off in 27 pass attempts. He completed 12, for 133 yards. Included was a short TD toss to current Oakland Raider tight end Brandon Myers.

6. This was Christensen’s second career start. The first was against Northern Illinois in 2006, in place of an injured Drew Tate (thumb). Christensen passed for 256 yards and two TDs that day.

7. Iowa’s leading receiver was freshman James Cleveland, who had three catches for 61 yards. He left the program after the season, finishing his college career at Houston, where he caught 161 passes for 2,014 yards in two seasons.

Huskies Close Out Fall Camp with Mock Game - Northern Illinois Official Athletic Site

From article:

"We had a great fall camp," Doeren said. "I really like the chemistry of our team, and our senior leadership has impressed me. Today was a really good day mentally, we got a lot of things in.I feel good about where we're at right now. It's time to play a game and see what we have."

The Huskies, who have a 16-man senior class but only five fifth-year seniors on the roster, went through three complete weeks of preseason this year. With two starters returning on offense from a year ago after the loss of offensive lineman Logan Pegram in the first week, Doeren and his staff saw positive signs at every position on that side of the ball.

"Our quarterback [Jordan Lynch] played extremely well throughout fall camp," Doeren said. "Our tight end position is immensely improved from a year ago. We've got Luke Eakes, who is a year older, Tim Semisch is a year older and [2010 starter] Jason Schepler is back in the line-up. Our tailback pool has improved over the last couple of weeks. I think Leighton Settle has really started to come on now that he's healthy. I feel good about where we are [offensively]."

"We have a talented offensive line," Doeren said. "They're young, but they're really talented, they learn fast and they have good chemistry. [Losing Logan] hurt us from an experience standpoint; he's been in a lot of battles, so he brought a calming presence. But I really like the guys that are playing too. I don't feel like we're in a position where we're saying `oh my gosh, you're playing this guy,' that's not where we're at. We might have a guy here or there that's playing a little more than you thought he would. We would have rotated a lot of guys inside this year anyway."
