NCAA Denies Iowa's Request to Honor Chris Street

I'm not sure what day it falls on, but sometime during the first two weeks of every baseball, every player in the league wears #42 to "honor" Jackie Robinson. Instead, the opposite happens. Since every player is wearing the same number with no names on their backs, it cheapens his memory. It's turned into a marketing gimmick instead of honoring the man who broke the games color barrier.

The same thing would have happened Saturday if every player on the team had had "Street" and the number 40 on their back. The jersey on the chair was the perfect touch, and said much, much more than 12 guys wearing the same jersey would have.

I think this is a perfect example of Iowa asking for permission instead of forgiveness. And for that reason I blame Iowa in this fiasco.

Just do it. What is the NCAA going to do, pull schollies, put you on post season probation? No, at worst, they would call and kick and scream about how they could change uniforms without letting them know, Barta says he's sorry and it's over.

You are faster than me! :)

Wow, that's ridiculous. Exactly for the reasons you stated. Oregon and Maryland's ability to alter and change their unis whenever they want should be a violation. I actually like some of what Oregon does, but it is still an unfair recruiting advantage. Kids like that.

Not being able to put a name on the back of the jerseys for one game in honor of a former player is hypocritical. Ugh.

Now I'm gonna get mad every time I see a crazy pro combat uniforrm. The NCAA is a corrupt joke.

The number 40 would not have been part of it. Just the name Street.

And, you are wrong (IMO) about the number 42 jerseys in MLB. It's the perfect touch and allows young people to find out who they are talking about. It happens on April 15 which happens to be the day he debuted in MLB.

If you are a Division 1 Athletic Director, you know what the NCAA is, and you know what matters and what doesn't. I blame the Iowa AD, not the NCAA.

I seriously doubt this went up to Mark Emmert, someone at Iowa just said, uh oh, we better see if this is allowed and an intern probably said no and they just nodded their head and said ok.

My point still stands. The jersey on the chair was perfect, and I can't imagine that anyone here would disagree with that. It was perfect.

This thread is an example of people looking for something to complain about.

I liked the jersey touch. For me, the NCAA's hypocrisy is what ticks me off.

I actually agree with the first paragraph completely.

But this isn't complaining about them not doing it, it's about having an idea that is totally harmless and being totally pussified to do anything about it.

No one disagrees with the jersey on the chair. Some folks don't know why all of the players jerseys could not have Street on them. On Saturday, all of Gonzaga's jerseys had Bulldogs on the back where the name normally goes. What was the problem with that?

Also, it's ironic you mentioned people looking for something to complain about after talking about MLB and the 42 jersey. :)

I was using the Jackie Robinson thing as a comparison; it was the only thing I could think of. I can't think of any other league that does anything similar.

It's either Monday or people are stupid today.

Why be upset at Iowa for continuing to follow the rules? That's what separates us from those other schools that just do their thing and don't care if they get caught or punished.

Yep. This is where Iowa should have either: (A) Not asked for permission in the first place, done it, and faced whatever consequences the NCAA would have dealt out; or (B) Done it regardless of the NCAA not granting permission - although option (A) would have been ideal.

It would have been a potential PR problem (dare I say a nightmare) for the NCAA, and one the University should have taken head on. Especially in light of all the silly things going with uniforms in this day and age - as JDM pointed out.

UofI should have given the double finger to the NCAA on this one.
