NC Game v. Rose Bowl

Anybody else thinking more about the Rose Bowl than a potential National Championship game? Not at all anticipating an Iowa loss or athe Rose Bowl as a consolation game, but just because the Rose Bowl is such a big deal traditionally and that's what Big11 teams/fans have worked for (okay, fans aren't really working). (I remember getting made at my parents when Iowa lost the Chuck Long/Ronnie Harmon Rose Bowl).

I am also one who doesn't like the BCS or a playoff and just wishes we would play the bowls and let folks argue about everything else once the dust settles.

For what its worth, I also think Iowa's D will be an unwelcome surprise to its bowl opponent --- as S. Carolina found out last year.

I'll be the first to complain about getting left out if the Hawks 12-0 and get passed over, but right now I want to book tix for the RB.

Im over the Rose Bowl...Im hoping for Fiesta if no NC game...

You must have ESPN, i was just talking to one of my co-workers and said that while it is nice to dream about NC, i would regrettfyully understand if a one loss SEC, one loss Texas or a one loss USC finished ahead of us.

The Rose Bowl is none to shabby and a 12 and 0 or a 12 and 1 Iowa gets there.

Heck of an accomplishment in my book.

With what we have coming back next year (including this years luck) we would get more support from the human polls.

I'll take the national title game all day. Second choice would be the fiesta, only because it's right down the road from me. :)

So when you are talking about going to the Fiesta Bowl, basically that scenario plays out by only losing to OSU and PSU not beating OSU, but getting BCS bowl bid anyway?

Only way we go to the Fiesta is if we get an at-large bid and another team wins the B10 title. But that would mean we'd have to lose at least 2 of our last 4, and at that point I don't know if we'd be ranked high enough to get an at-large. The human polls hate us; 2 losses and we'd probably be out of the top 25 in them, although our BCS rank wouldn't drop as far.

**Edit - Actually, I lied. OSU could win out, we could win all but that game, finish 11-1, but OSU would win the Rose Bowl tie-breaker. We'd have an outside shot at a BCS at-large in that case...

That's pretty much the only way it can happen. Even then I think a 1-loss Iowa gets shut out of a BCS bowl.

If Iowa goes 11-1, its going to get a BCS bid. And no way does a 1-loss Texas team go to title over a 12-0 Iowa team. Not a chance of that.

While in some ways I defer to Jon becasue he understands the BSC "workings" much better than I ever will, I still disagree with him on this one. The human polls do not think this team is legit. I think 1 loss puts us out off the Top 10.

Why would you regretfully understand getting leaped by an SEC team?? Both Floridan and Alabama have shown they are beatable!!

Florida:
23-13 over tenn
13-3 over LSU
23-20 over ARK!
29-19 over MISS

Alabama: (better than Flordia IMO)
12-10 over Tenn

So Bama takes Flordia out in the SEC game and Florida loses all title hopes. Come on guys, being in Rose is awesome and would be amazing! Who thought we would be having this converstion in august! But From a recruiting stand point, a historical accomp stand point, how could ever NOT want to go to the Nationa Title game?!?!

I agree with Jon on this one.

This is what I'm most worried about. Our computer rankings might be our saving grace, but I wouldn't be surprised to be dropped 10-12 spots with a loss at OSU.

There are a ton of scenarios that can happen. But here is why I see Iowa getting cheated out of a BCS game. I am making the assumption Iowa loses to OSU and wins their other 3 games and OSU wins out (both big assumptions), thereby putting Iowa at 11-1, and giving OSU the Rose Bowl bid.

1. Oky State beats out Texas and wins the Big 12 Champ. I think they jump Iowa (and Texas) in the polls.

2. I don't think a 1 loss Iowa gets the nod ahead of a 1 loss Texas. Both are undefeated currently, and Texas is ahead in the polls. (Besides of the one losses, Texas' loss would have come from a higher rated BCS team (#14 rank OSU) compared to Iowa's (#17 rank tOSU)

3. Florida and Alabama will meet in the SEC Championship - One of these teams will lose. However a 1 loss Florida or Alabama get the nod over a 1 loss Iowa.

3. Boise State, Cincy, and/or TCU goes undefeated. Iowa doesn't jump any of these teams.

4. Oregon wins the Pac 10 goes to the Rose Bowl

5. USC now has 2 losses. Which gets the nod, a 2 loss USC (who beat OSU & ND) or Iowa? I worry USC gets the nod.

6. How does Iowa stack up against a 1 loss LSU?

There are a lot of one loss teams in the Top 25. The computer likes Iowa, but the human polls aren't as generous. I think 1 loss gives the human polls more than enough "See I told you so" ammo to drop Iowa into a 10-15 ranking.

This could be a prophetic post right here. Nice work on that scenario...hawkfan I don't think that the human polls could drop the Hawks 10-12 places...I have to agree with Tuba that a 10-15 ranking would be the case with a loss to OSU...because with any luck the Hawks will at least climb one or two spots form where they are now...

Ya! all the AZ Hawks (and i know there is quite a few) start banging for the Fiesta Bowl on this board and down in AZ!

I agree with this, would be nice to see the Hawks in a west coast venue, Fiesta would be real nice, but RB would just as nice. I could actually afford to go to those.

Rose Bowl is fine and dandy and everything, but how could you NOT be rooting for a National Championship bid?! It is the #1 vs the #2 team in the land, for the chance to be the best team EVER! That is the ultimate goal- IS IT NOT?
Stop being Cowards, people. Let's hope for the best (NC), and kick some butt if we get it.

Of course I would choose the NC game over Rose Bowl game. Just saying that there is a lot of tradition, memories, etc. driving the thought process right now that naturally leads to the Rose Bowl. Maybe its just the memories as a little kid watching the Rose Bowl (which obviously ended up in part as bad memories).

Some of you are being rediculous...

First, Jon is right. IF we go undefeated we will not be passed up by a 1 loss team. I don't care what talking heads on ESPN, human polls, etc. say. I'm not saying we won't be left out of the NC title game b/c that could happen if there are two other unbeatens.

Secondly, anyone who wants the Rose Bowl over the NC game needs to have their head examined. Seriously, this game is the PINNACLE of college football and to want to play in any other game is assanine.

Im just taking it one game at a time right now. At the end of the season we could be either 8-4, 9-3, 10-2, 11-1, or 12-0...All four records could put us in a different bowl game. Lets just talk Indiana, like what are they gonna throw at us on Offense and Defense...maybe they will come after one of our punts etc...what are our thoughts on this!
