Is one of my favorite sports events of the year.

John Wall and Blake Griffin got it started nicely tonight.

You might be alone on this one. I didn't even care enough to watch the highlight. Sorry dude, I just can't get into the NBA much. Just a bunch of guys who play "half-fast" all season until the playoffs, then they start trying.
IMHO. [see what I did ^ there?]

as opposed to the NFL that benches their starters as soon as they clinch (not a big fan of that) but the same principal. now they wanna add two more games to water it down more, great. as far as the nba goes, its the best basketball in the world, i think it would be hard for any athlete to compete balls to the wall two or three times a week for 10 months out of the year.(if you make the playoffs) not to mention olympic workouts every two years for the best players

also i love all star weekend also, by far the best all star festivities in pro sports

I also love NBA All-Star weekend! Definitely my favorite All-Star celebration in pro sports, and also one of my favorite weekends of the year! Love all of the events, including the Rookie-Sophomore Game and the ASG itself. I can't wait to be able to get to one of these in person!

I've been on this planet for 40 years and for 39 of them they have said that about the NBA, even during the heyday of the eighties. 10 game roadie back to back to back games at places like Sacramento, Detroit and Milwaukee I'm not going to kill a guy for occasionally mailing it in. No matter what you do for a living or how much you love it you simply can't bring your A game all the time.

McGee should have won the dunk contest. Overall though pretty solid night. I think Charles is right in saying that the NBA does their all star event is the best of the major sports.

I really don't like the way they do the dunk contest now. I think they should award points and have a real winner; voting for the winner is lame, especially since you can start voting before the final dunks are actually attempted. Don't like that at all.

I have to disagree with this one. The All-Star game and Rookie/Sophomore games are both unwatchable.

The Dunk contest has not been interesting in about 10 years. What else can they do that has not been done yet?

The only part I actually like watching is the 3 point shootout and the skills challenge.

Baseball has the best All-Star game by far.

I don't know, dunk three balls at once? Dunk on two hoops at once? Jump over a car and dunk?

Baseball's All Star game is not near as good as the NBA All-Star game. Basebally players don't even want to be there, most of the starters are gone and out of the ball park before the game is even over. NBA players actually like being there. The 4th quarter is also more competitive than any other All-Star event in any other sport by far. You get the best of the best out there playing hard at the end. By the end of the MLB all-star game you're watching the scrubs from the Pirates and Nats and Orioles which is what happens when you take 30 some All Stars from each league and try to play everyone.

Meh, Nance dunked two balls at once 2 decades ago. Eventually you just run out of original ideas. The 2 hoops was the most original one this year and that was decent. They have been jumping over objects for quite a few years too. Just because the object changes does not mean its original.

You bring up a good point about the MLB All-Star game though. If I could change one rule in that game it would be the rule that says every team must be represented with an All-Star. That is garbage. It should be the best players in the game and maybe save one spot and guarantee the host team gets at least one player in the game.

Just pray that the all-star game never comes to your city! I will never forget that weekend a few years ago! Shootings, fights and the smell of weed billowing over Las Vegas Blvd.....it was a gangsta's paradise around here. I hope All-star weekend never comes back.

Isn't this every weekend in Vegas?

1) Jump over cars
2) Dunk 3 balls at once
3) Dunk on two separate hoops
4) Alley oop pass off the support bracket through the legs dunk
5) Dunk on a 13 foot hoop
6) Dunk from BEHIND (first time ever) the free throw line
7) Blow out a candle in a cup cake sitting on the back of the rim then dunking
8) Snatch a childs toy attached to the rim (with your teeth) and dunk

That's just off the top of my head and from the last year or so...

The NBA All-Star weekend is without a doubt the most well run of the major sports, they just "get it". Suprisingly a close second in that regard is Hockey, it's clearly not as mainstream as the other sports but they do All Star weekend correctly.

2) Dunk 3 balls at once- Nance did 2 twenty years ago, not original.
3) Dunk on two separate hoops- said that was neat
4) Alley oop pass off the support bracket through the legs dunk- did that dunk get completed?
5) Dunk on a 13 foot hoop- props to who did that
6) Dunk from BEHIND (first time ever) the free throw line-been attempted before, not original
7) Blow out a candle in a cup cake sitting on the back of the rim then dunking- clever
8) Snatch a childs toy attached to the rim (with your teeth) and dunk- clever

One of the other things I dont like about the dunk contest is you sit there and watch guys miss dunks for 90 seconds most of the time.

Give them 1 shot and let them decide if the reward outweighs the risk.

1) It's still never been done
2) 3 is an improvement over 2, again never been done before
3) Yes
4) Yes it was completed
5) Dwight Howard last year
6) Yes attempted but this is the first time it's actually ever been done

I understand that some of these exact dunks have never been done before. Some of them are just alterations off of other dunks, which is why I said they arent original. At least the idea of them is not original.

Does it take incredible athleticsim to do these? Absolutely. Could I do them? No way in hell. Do I find it all that entertaining to watch? Not really.

I guess the dunk contest is just not my thing, never has been and never will be.

Theres nothing wrong with that, to each his own. But I'm guessing you don't watch much NBA in general. There can be little doubt that the overall point is correct. Namely the NBA allstar game really does a nice job in putting out a product that it's fans really enjoy. They also put out a product that tunes in occasional fans (like myself).

Baseball and the NFL on the otherhand can't even get hard core football fans to watch. I can't remember the last time I watched anything related to the pro bowl, or more than an inning or two of an allstar game.
