NBA All-Star Weekend

Theres nothing wrong with that, to each his own. But I'm guessing you don't watch much NBA in general. There can be little doubt that the overall point is correct. Namely the NBA allstar game really does a nice job in putting out a product that it's fans really enjoy. They also put out a product that tunes in occasional fans (like myself).

Baseball and the NFL on the otherhand can't even get hard core football fans to watch. I can't remember the last time I watched anything related to the pro bowl, or more than an inning or two of an allstar game.

Thats the thing though. I do follow the NBA and follow the Celtics religiously. Guess I'm the oddball NBA fan who doesnt care for their all-star weekend.

The Pro Bowl is atrocious and I would argue that people who think the last quarter of the NBA all-star game is great because you have the best of the best going at it, I would say the same thing about the first 2-3 innings of the MLB all star game. A dominant pitcher going up against 5 or 6 of the best hitters from the other league. But you are right, to each their own.

I don't know, dunk three balls at once? Dunk on two hoops at once? Jump over a car and dunk?

Baseball's All Star game is not near as good as the NBA All-Star game. Basebally players don't even want to be there, most of the starters are gone and out of the ball park before the game is even over. NBA players actually like being there. The 4th quarter is also more competitive than any other All-Star event in any other sport by far. You get the best of the best out there playing hard at the end. By the end of the MLB all-star game you're watching the scrubs from the Pirates and Nats and Orioles which is what happens when you take 30 some All Stars from each league and try to play everyone.

I think there are just as many if not less MLB teams than NBA teams and baseball requires almost twice as many players on the field than players on the court and that doesn't even account for situational pitching and DH. So yeah, there are some less than spectacular players in the MLB All-Star game, but you can't tell me those guys don't want to be there. They are playing the sport they love and have been voted best of the bunch by their piers and by the fans. Not to mention the outcome actually has some importance now (home field advantage for the WS.) It sounds like you don't watch much baseball. Because the game is actually quite spectacular. Most people don't appreciate it because they don't understand all the nuances within the game itself. I'm not saying that is bad, it is what it is. But most people don't get it unless they've really become students of the game. It is almost like a mini chess game within an athletic event. My wife used to not like baseball much, but now she watches a lot of Twins games on TV with me in the summer. She first started watching just Mauer because she thinks he's hot, but then started asking questions and now understands the strategy of the game enough that she gets pretty into it now and then. Not bad for somebody who didn't know what the DH was just a couple of years ago.

For those saying that these dunks have all been done before, I would be curious to know how you feel about the HR Derby at the MLB ASG?

I watch plenty of baseball. And if the All-Star game really meant something they would play the reserves first and end with all the real stars. And I'm sure the undeserving players from the last place teams do like being there, but there's no reason why every team should be required to have an all star on the team. This isn't little league.

Baseball is a sport that could have a terrific all star game. I would love to see them play it like a real game, and not just try to get everyone in the game.

I also don't find Joe Mauer particularly good look, I'll tell you who is an attractive man, George Will.

Not a huge fan of it but I find it more entertaining than the dunk contest. It actually involves skill that you would use in a game of baseball, hitting the ball that is going over the plate. Granted they are all meat pitches and it equates to batting practice.

So are you saying people don't dunk in NBA games? Because I'm pretty sure doing a 360 between the legs dunk is just about as relevent to game skills as hitting a 60 mph lob down the middle of the plate.

Not when its coming from 40-45 feet away instead of 60'6". And I just said in my previous post that it equates to batting practice.

How many times have you seen an NBA team warm up by dunking on two baskets at the same time? None I would guess.

How many times have you seen baseball players warm up with taking batting practice? Every game.

Eh..it's still basically the same thing. How many times do you see NBA players mess around with dunks before games? Every game.

Baseball players also don't swing the same way they do in the Home Run derby as they normally do in batting practice. There's a reason a lot of players screw up their swings in the home run derby.

They're both just extreme versions of actions which are part of the regular game.
