Nate played well but not waiting for receivers to clear

I was just going to look up his thread from a few days ago.

Didn't he cite Brandon as all MIA or all underachiever or something like that?
Yes. He said it’s time to play somebody else. That kid’s catch today was a circus catch. He’s made some clutch receptions lately.

Iowa focuses on TEs. The WRs can’t throw the ball to themselves. He doesn’t get that.

We are really going there on Nate today, lmao give me a break. How stupid is this thread.. Those were straight up unbelievably brutal conditions for any QB at any level..

These JR high flag football coaches know it all. Didn't you know? You can tell who doesn't go to the games around here with shit like this from the OP

It's like Chicago Cub trolls from 2016 (when they won 103 regular season games and the World Series)

When the Cubs won a close game, the trolls complained that they lacked killer instinct to put teams away.

When they won laughers, the complaint was their bullpen couldn't close games.

Closers can't finish games they don't pitch in. And receivers can't catch balls not thrown to them. Smith's improvement from the Northern Illinois game, when poor route running led to at least one pick, to now is remarkable. Sometimes it just takes one play to get a player going and Smith's big catch inside the ten against ISU may have been just that.

He gets a "Get out of jail free card" from me yesterday with that wind. Just find away to win and get the hell out of there.

That early INT prob got in his head and made him apprehensive. He needs to learn how to flush that chit.

I don’t think it’s timing, it’s just missing the throws. Poor accuracy.

If you look at the throws to Fant, Easley, etc., the receiver was in position, Stanley just didn’t hit him. To Easley he had a fraction of a second, and threw it in my opinion at exactly the right time (the only time he could), but he threw it behind him.

This is the frustrating thing about Stanley. The plays develop and spread out like they should, but he throws WAY too may uncatchable balls when guys are wide open, and when guys are in coverage those turn into picks.

I would like to get your opinion on Nate throwing early when he has time and not waiting for receivers to either come out of their break or clear defenders.

On several rollouts Nate had time but threw it quicker than maybe need to. One was that one to Easley who hadnt quite come out of his break but was starting to be wide open. wait a half second and hit him in stride.

Another was a tight window throw to fant who was splitting two defenders and if Nate waits a second Fant is totally behind both defenders and wide open for a TD. There were a couple of others and a few where he rushed the throw before pivoting his feet and making a good stride (two of these were the low throws he made).

Not sure if Nate was just playing too fast, not seeing some things or what. He made some very good throws when we needed them but we also need these incompletions being completions when receivers are starting to get open.

Anyone notice some of these quick throws and have other examples and comments.?

Sometimes he throws with a stiff front leg (no knee flex) and the ball can sail on him when he does so. His accuracy has improved, but still the one part of his game that needs more improvement. Solid B.

Stanley is far from a finished project (I think he'd be the first to admit that), but, he's getting there.

His accuracy suffers due to primarily two issues: One, his footwork. He's still not quite to the point where it's natural for him. Second - and we saw this several times yesterday - he gets too easily distracted by rushers. The most effective QBs may see a rusher out of the corner of their eyes, but they keep their focus on the play at hand. He needs to understand that under many circumstances the ball is going to be gone before he is hit, even if it is a split second. That's what happened on that open play to Hockenson yesterday. Nate saw a rusher coming from his left and shifted his gaze. By the time he looked downfield again, the play was basically over.

I tried to - but I could only conjure up 15 mph - but I was great. Everyone of the 8 year olds said so.

Good to see you over here, BP. Have you totally abandoned 247?

We need to get the wrestling threads going. For whatever reason, there's a real dearth of wrestling fans here on HN.

It does appear he may have a "duck in water" thing going on. He looks calm, but he presses a little.

Get him comfy early. Let him sling it later.

I'm no QB technician but this ^^^ is the bottom line assessment.
* I like how he's beginning to realize he can make a play with his legs (and size).

* He still has a very long way to go with his consistent timing, touch and placement.
-- Silver lining: the db's are also dropping his short fast balls. ;)

* While o.p. asks about quick throws, more often than not he holds too long, especially on roll-outs (i.e. missing TJ for the TD - can't give up those points.) and usually increases his margin for error by forcing a tighter window as he approaches the sideline.

He is definitely improving. Leaving early is folly. He'll be back and in the discussion for many awards next year.

If Fant and Hooker can be convinced to return, the Hawks keep their heads, BF continues to evolve and with so much young talent - at almost every single position - that looks to be stepping forward every game ... 2019? WOW!

This is as positive as I've felt about Iowa football in a decade!:)

Doesnt go to the games, I have probably only missed 15 home games since 1974. Lets see 44 years times 6.5 games per year - 15 games = 271 games at Kinnick even through the very low points plus some games in the 60s-73.

Only games I miss are for crappy weather (seldom) and grandkid's birthday.

Hey Pythagora, use your ultimate Greek Math skills to tell me how many games you have been to at kinnick and how much fan time and money you have given to the program. Inquiring minds want to know!!!!

I was jumping on CJB's technique, strong arm and quick release when I saw him as a soph in WDes Moines practice and Spring Game.

I was glad to hear someone say Nate is not using his front leg correctly but I am basically talking about seeing the receivers opening up and maybe throwing them open.

I will try to find the several exact game time sections I am talking about and post them here so you skeptics can go take a look.

And I definitely agree with the 'he waits too long sometimes' but hey Nate has had a lot of stellar games, ISU and OSU last year, several this year, and others.

Stanley reminds me of Stanzi in 2009. Stanzi just made bonehead throws in the first six or seven games that would keep teams in it. If you remember, he led the country in pick sixes in 2009. In many respects they were just unexplainable throws...think Minnesota, end of half, nothing there, Stanley rolling out to the sideline and throwing it right to a Minnesota player rather than throwing it away. Stanzi did that six times.

The throw yesterday on the first drive was just a mystery. There was nothing there...throw it away..or just get what you can running it...trying to throw that late is a recipe for disaster...he knew there were guys around him. Bad decision...you are driving the ball...in plus territory...live to fight another play.

This is the stretch where we need him to be a good decision maker. You don't want to take away his aggressiveness, but in obvious play breakdowns...when you get off schedule...that's when you need to be careful.

He gets a pass with that wind...the wind does weird stuff to your head...speeds you up. You should see me play golf in the wind. I know I need to swing at the same speed into the wind...but I literally hurt myself and my backswing is two feet shorter than normal.

Oh yes Stanzi in 2009 was a pick machine, haha , crazy and exciting.

And oh yes, a real good golfer told some of us when we were in our teens to swing easy and hit easy into the wind to cut down on the backspin which the wind eats up but hit it like hell with the wind bcuz there is less slice and hook

Would not make too much of today's passing game. If anyone has played golf in strong winds they would agree

not a skeptic at all. I think he missed at least 3 open looks this game — I’m not talking about open receivers on the other side of the field — but where his eyes were pointing.

TJ was one where no one around him on rollout & Nate ate it. Another was TE&WR covered 15+ down the field by sideline and FB (I think) had nobody near him 8yds in the same look.

There was another I thought but can’t remember right now. I think it was with Easley but .... ?

Oh yes, the open fullback, that play was coming right at us and the FB was open by a lot while he did have a window to the WR the FB was best option by far.

Another one he threw too early but maybe he had to (I would have to look at a reply) was a short pass to outside but IKM was running a wheel route totally uncovered up the same sideline in the line of site.

If Nate can be coached up and develop his abilities to see these patterns opening up even before they do he will be outstanding.

Yep! That’s the one (IKM) I was thinking about. Nice recall there.
