Nate Meier to DE?

I like this move. We need DE's. The frosh from nebraska last year got his feet wet,and Dominic Alvis should be set up for a good senior year. Need more depth.

Alvis has been having a good off season. Can't wait to see him after an entire spring ball and then fall camp.

So then he is 250 going against 325 lb linemen, brand new to d line? I want to be optimistic here guys but 1) lets not get carried away and 2) I hope we have a plan b. or is this plan b?

I don't believe anyone is getting carried away. I think people recognize he's a hard nosed kid with athleticism, and is a workout machine. That's where the optimism comes in. The fact that he's moving to a our weakest spot, tells me one thing. We are definitely weak at DE.

He won't be asked to be Adrian Clayborn...my guess is that he is either a third down guy, or someone who get's more looks against a NW, Indiana, or other spread teams, where you need guys that can cover some ground. Remember, our DE's are typically controlling the outside contain, so he will need to hold the 325 pound guy up for a bit, but turn everything inside to the DT and Linebackers. I just like the move as it gives us athleticism at the DE position...something that was sorely lacking last year. My guess is that he's a year away from major contribution, but I like the move long term.

I'm all for being optimistic, I live the cool aid, but....we need playmakers right now, yesterday for that matter. He seems to be a project, which is fine if we had two guys ahead of him. An undersized freshman. (Or soph, not sure what he is) that hasn't played d line in college before, meh, I hope this isn't the guy we are counting on for next year.

We converted a running back to d-end back in Hayden's day, Smith, and he led the nation in sacks.
We converted a fullback,Babineaux, to d-tackle and he is still playing in the NFL for the Falcons.

It happens all the time. Best athletes need to find the field.

So since no one was added by transfer or recruiting class we should just forget the position?
If you want playmakers now this may be your only option.

No, can't forget the position at all. We have to do everything we can to fill it as best we can and yes speed on the end can be a supplement for size. When you consider he is undersized and add that he is an underclass man, and has not played the position, i am personally not counting on him to be a big factor next year. It would be great, but I'm skeptical.

Yes, we have done it before and can do it again, and I would be thrilled if we did do it again, all said though, I'm waiting until i see him on the field making plays.

I didn't know Leroy started out as a RB:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leroy_Smith_(American_football)

Leroy Smith came to the University of Iowa from Sicklerville, New Jersey. He played running back in high school but moved to the defensive end position in college, because Iowa already had a stockpile of good running backs.[SUP] [/SUP]As a junior in 1990, Smith played on Iowa’s Big Ten championship team that went to the Rose Bowl.
Leroy Smith had perhaps the most dominating senior season a Hawkeye defensive end has ever had.[SUP] [/SUP]His signature game came against Ohio State in 1991. He recorded 14 tackles, including a school-record five quarterback sacks, in Iowa’s 16-9 victory.[SUP] [/SUP]Smith had 18 sacks on the season, which broke a Big Ten record that had stood for 14 years.

Leroy would have been more like an outside LB in the defensive scheme that Hayden ran correct?

Have you noticed that speed rushers are all the rage in both the NFL and college ball? Guys like Matthews of Green Bay were lbs in college and run by the 325lb tackles like their feet are in cement.

Somebody doesn't understand the difference between a 3-4 outside LB and a 4-3 DE.

He isn't undersized.

He isn't undersized.

Yeah, I don't think so either. For a big ten DE he'll do well at that size as a starting point. He'll get bigger from here on out, but even if he didn't he's still big enough for DE. Wouldn't that be something if he did well at that position this year?

Someone does not remember Aaron Kampman at Iowa, a converted lber at d-end,who also played d-end at Green Bay. Someone does not allow outside the box thinking to intrude on their rigid, stepford mentality.

I suspect that this person was responding to the quote about the Green Bay guy. At least that's how I read it. Kampman is taller as well.

What year did we switch kampman? How big/ weight was he as a lb before we converted him to d end? Not being jag bag, serious ?s.

Kampman was around 250lbs as a lber, then got jacked up to 270+ at d-end. Then he maxed out at 283 for pro day(no combine invite), got picked in the 5th round by GBay,then promptly dropped to 270 to play d-end at Green Bay.

Dude, how much fail do you want? You talked up Clay Matthews as an example of a smaller DE pass rusher. I informed you that Matthews was an outside LB in a 3/4 alignment. You then brought up Kampman who measures 6'4" in NFL measurements. Well, Kampman was let go in 2009 because he didn't fit the switch to the 3/4. Clay Matthews took that spot.

You can either say he is like Clay Matthews or Aaron Kampman. He is shorter than both, but never mind that. I would say he is closer to CM3, which means not quite 4/3 DE stock.

Clay Matthews played everywhere on that line this year. Against the Bears he was inside, hand down, then outside hand down, then outside standing.....if a guy can play, he can play. You have written off Meier before even seeing him on the practice field because of dimensions....good for you. Matt Roth was another lber in HS who ended up at D-end at Iowa. But,of course,Meier has no shot to ever get on the field, according to the formula.
