My Thoughts from Ball State Game

Iowa is 2-0. OSU, MSU, Michigan and Wisky would gladly trade records with Iowa right now.

Hopefully the Ball State game serves as a wake up call and we see a different squad starting on 9/13.

You can't win them all if you don't win the first two.

We got worse instead of better. Need to turn that around quick.

Uni should have been the wake up call. And my guess they will play un-inspired for the first half against Isu, while Isu treats in like their bowl game.

Too many mistakes, but this week they were more physical (such as fumbles), dropped passes, etc. While I'm not happy about how they have played there is still a part in the back of my head that sees all the weapon Iowa has, and thinks that they will start taking advantage at some point. I just hope it doesn't take a loss to totally kick it into gear. Thanks God for the D that we have, to give the O the luxury of time to figure it all out.

And you could say the exact opposite for Game 1 against UNI.

Hopefully we see more of a complete effort the rest of the year. Special teams obviously have to improve a lot as well.

Ball State has a very good program with an excellent coaching staff. This guy will end up at a bigger program soon. They've won 19 games last two seasons - and have scored a lot of points in doing so.

Iowa's defense, in reality, pitched a shutout. And really came up big - vintage norm parker iowa defense - when it really counted down the stretch.

Iowa's offense put up 450 yards.

Iowa held their running game to under 100 yards and total offense just over 200 yards.

The biggest stat is the W.

Fans are fickle, I get that. Not too long ago, fans complained about running the ball too much. Now, the passes are too many, too short and not enough of #45 in the mix.

hopefully iowa can find a FG kicker.

The defense was stellar. Offense got better in the second half. Got some passes beyond the 5 yard line. Some positive runs. But overall not a good running game. That needs to get better. Kicking not good.

I still want to know how Iowa's first TD got overturned. He was clearly in bounds and had possession. That overturn was total ********. On the other hand it was the beginning of what would be **** poor officiating all game long. The running into the kicker call was awful, the non-calls on Ball State for pass interference all second half were maddening, and I'm sure there were others I'm forgetting.

they are trying to walk too fine of a line on these catch/no catch calls. same as in nfl. a catch is a catch, no matter of it moves a fraction of a bit or not. or the player catches the ball an in process of the catch and going down part of the ball touches the ground - not aided in the catch, but touch the ground - no catch. i think that is crazy.

that was a TD.

I agree. That play was near our seats and the ref was in a perfect spot to make the call. It had better be pretty obvious if you are going to overturn the call. I didn't see the replay, so maybe it was.

Does anybody know what conference the officials were from? I thought their lack of pass-interference calls in Iowa's favor, especially the back-to-back ones on Powell and Smith were horribly missed. Just curious, as I know that they don't have to Big Ten officials yet since we are not in Big Ten play.

Iowa's defense was incredible. They basically allowed 3 points.

Iowa's offense is just confusing. The dink and dunk game from Ruddock and the 5 RB's and 4 TE's by committee is just mind boggling. Either Weismann needs to get 20 carries a game or he needs to only get goaline/short yardage carries. Bullock seems like a good 3rd down RB, but the majority of the carries need to be going to Daniels and Canzeri. Against Ball state the carries went Canzeri 5, Daniels 4, Weismann 6, Parker 3, Bullock 3. That's just stupid football.

The old saying goes that if you think you have 2 starting quarterbacks, you don't even have one. Well a similar saying needs to go with this 5 RB and 4 TE approach.

Your listed teams have all played better, much better (i.e. some ranked) opponents. Some on the road.

Iowa has played FCS and MAC in cozy Kinnick. No comparison. None.

Dumb analogy.

And they would all trade records/resumes right now...guaranteed.

I wouldn't. They played much better competition.
They know where they stand and so do we. And so does the selection committee.

We beat FCS/MAC by 12 combined points. Our 2-0 is << 1-1.

Wake up. Wins don't mean squat. Strength of Schedule does.

Smart Seth53.

I know I thank god for the D that I have, to give the O's that I do.

Does it matter to any Hawk fan that, with either the weakness of Iowa's schedule or Iowa's results against said schedule, Iowa will never be in contention for the national championship?

Do you think that matters to recruits?

We have no idea how important SOS is going to be. Alabama and Oklahoma both play as easy or easier schedules than Iowa does, and I'd be willing to bet it isn't going to hurt their chances one single bit.
