my reason for breaking up the classes

If someone is just not going to be needed at all because there is just not enough playing time to be had, then fine redshirt them.

But keep in mind that most players don't want to redshirt. If you redshirt someone against their will, ala Marcelous Summerville, it most likely will not turn out good. That guy alone could have dramatically changed the Alford era.

Worrying about balancing out classes is pointless IMO. You can never predict what is going to happen next year let alone 5 years down the road. You have injuries, transfers, grade issues, possibly even early departures.

You play to win for the current year.

I don't want a player on Iowa who is affraid of competition. So if someone wants to trasfer because they are affraid of playing time so be it. Iowa is better off without that player for two reasons.

1. that player is very average and does not help put the program where it needs to be
2. that player is affraid to compete and that player brings no value.

It's big time college sports. Teams ALWAYS are recruiting guys to take your spot. It's the same thing in pro sports.

I see no reason why 6 players can not play significat minutes with the other two in the rotation adding some solid minutes. I figure an 8 man rotation is pretty solid and over the course of a long season you can get up to 10 guys playing time. There are games where Basabe and McCabe tend to pick up 3 fouls in about 8 minutes and sit a long time on the bench. There are injuries, guys have off nights, academic issues, missed games due to family issues.

I think Fran is envisioning a larger than 8 man rotation. He wants to run and press. Really you need to play more than 8 if you plan on running and pressing hard all game.

Tom Davis routinely played 12 guys with no problems.

Herby, nobody is questioning your right to state your opinion and I commned you for staying on topic about Iowa hoops. I just think there are too many glaring factors that are working against you in this case.

McCaffrey would not be throwing anyone under the bus by filling the last scholarship. How would it make any difference if he filled it for next season or the year after? Every coach is trying to recruit someone to the bench if he can find a better player....that is the nature of competition. Trust me, Gatens would have taken more talent around and him fewer minutes / points to play on winning teams the past 4 years.

so tell me this. who has ever gone 13 deep during the heat of the game?
the 11th, 12th and the 13th player on the bench get mop up duty, there are to many players that feel they should start, why invite 6 or 7 when you play 5 starters at a time and have a solid rotation of 10? all that does in my opinion is a invitation to transferr,
and Sommerville left because of how Evans treated the other players in practice by being allowed to beat on them, another reason why Alford lost control of his team.
and was not prepared to coach at the next level like the BT.
RS had no impact on Sommersville leaving. that info comes directly from a sportwriter that covers Iowa BB
