My most epic fake punt meltdown post

The fake punt wasn't a big deal to me. I didn't see it coming because they were completely dominating on D and I figured they would just punt and expect to get the ball back shortly.
Give the D credit for holding them to a FG after that.

Shocking....

I suspect the Iowa call was to set up for a punt return, which has been successful in a few games earlier this year. Now we know that there is a greater chance of a fake punt than a successful punt return.

I don't think fOSU will be in any situation that would require them taking a chance like that. Or Northwestern, for that matter. Be looking for the fake punt in the Purdue game, though. It could be a closer game.

How hard is it to anticipate a fake punt every time (except in long yardage situations or a team pinned back near their goal line)?

It's this kind of thing that makes people doubt Ferentz' coaching abilities. Yeah, it's good that we develop players and especially offensive lineman. But, let's use our heads during the game!!!!

Like many of you, I was just incredulous when Iowa failed to protect against the fake punt. One caller on Soundoff had a good idea. When the opponent lines up to punt, it should be posted on every video board in the stadium "WATCH THE FAKE!!!" It couldn't hurt.
Even though Tommy in Des Moines, Edna in Decorah, and every person in Kinnick saw it coming. This was my post when it happened and I think it says it all.

What was your take?

You shore swear a lot.

There is only one logical answer to this. Fire Chris White. That's what Pat Haden would do...Mack Brown would do...Bert Beleimia would do. Hell Bert fired his OL coach mid season. I'm telling you, two fake punts have contributed immensely in our two losses. He was hired to address the issues with special teams. Other than the Central Michigan game, where presumably the black knight (after his duel) in Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail could have run back punts for TDs(see KMM's other game results), our Special Teams have been terrible. Consistently so. Todays world is too politically correct...people get fired all the time for not doing their job. It's obvious to me and someone should be held accountable. I know this isn't a popular post...but, well, I'm asked to be liked.

Is there such a thing to be able to set up for a return but still look over your shoulder to make sure a scrawny little punter is not running the ball your direction? The replays I seen on that punt everyone had their backs turned to the play and nobody turned around until it was way to late. How much are you really gaining by turning around and running the other direction before they kick the ball? Can't you set up a return efficiently by hitting your opponent closer to the original line of scrimmage?

You mean the games in which he's averaged 9.6 yards per return, which would rank in the top 30 nationally and fourth in the Big Ten?

Kevonte may not be a serious threat to take a punt all the way back against Big Ten teams, but he IS a serious threat to break off longer returns (20-40 yards) before being run down. He's had exactly ONE return that wasn't at least 10 yards (and just barely missed breaking one or two more for scores), and it was one where he took a chance and tried to catch it in traffic and make something happen (something many Iowa returners have been chastised on this board for NOT doing), and he got stopped for a 2-yard return. That kind of play happens to any returner, even guys like Devin Hester, from time to time.

He's the first legitimate punt returner we've had in quite some time.

Unfortunately we are not very good in Special Teams. We did return two kicks against a terrible team, but beyond that, I get nervous when we have to cover a kickoff or a punt. I get nervous when the other team is punting, heck, I even get nervous when we are kicking FGs. I long for the days when STs were a strength for the Hawks.

Iowa's straight up punt coverage has actually been pretty solid the last year or so (not many, if any big returns before last week, and we've had several punts downed deep in the opponent's end). It broke down last week, though.

Heck this is thug u home of trickeration! I honestly can't believe noobody was expecting anything less. I'm surprised they did'nt try it on the field goals. Oh boy the rest of the year is gonna be hard to watch on special teams.

Two words: "Oh, F***!" Didn't "like" that those were the words I chose, but, after already giving up one to NIU, I kind of figured we were done with those for another couple games.

Frankly, it's gotten to the point that teams should go into punt formation on downs one through three, as well. Our D statistics will suffer, but it's one of the "tricks" in beating our teams.
