My daughter's 7th grade bball team

won their first game of the year last night, 18-14. In one game this season they were down 30-0 at halftime! The reason I bring this up besides being a proud dad (daughter had 7 points) is that during the game the coach pulled all the girls in on a timeout and told them, if they continue to make the same mistakes (turnovers) that he would pull them out and find someone that wants to play better. I was impressed with that as most of the girls would dribble into a wall if he didn;t yell at them to look up.

So, what could possibly happen to ruin a joyful moment for these 13 year old girls? Yes, "that mom" reared her ugly head and began to chastise the coach from the stands for taking girls out so rapidly. I was startled when she began to heckle him. Then I was just embarrassed for her daughter. She ended up yelling at the coach while he was in a huddle forcing him to address her "I will speak with you after the game". Her daughter was crying.

My point is that the tough love that Fran displayed last night at the five minute mark is absolutely neccesary to move the program forward. I think putting Zach in had more to do with taking May out after mistakes and tentative play. I have to say, I look forward to Iowa bball games again. As well as my daughter's home game on Tuesday!

I know this isn't your main point, but from my officiating experience, junior high girls basketball has some of the worst fans.

I was a point guard on my 7th grade junior high team. I was 12 yrs & I had a teammates mom heckle me & get on my case from the stands during a TO about a turnover I had. Pretty lame & funny how I still remember it.

You absolutely have to get a little upset at youth players, especially girls. My daughter's team is a very average youth team and watching them practice or play can be ridiculous to watch. I help coach but I try to stay away because I know that my daughter will listen to someone else more. I have told the coach to make sure he "yells" at my daughter so she listens otherwise she won't pay attention.

Youth sports are like a necessary evil. The kids love but a high percentage of parents in the stands make it hard to stomach, so I have no problem telling people to shut up (from my daughters team or the opponents), just last week a parent on from our team was yelling at the ref the entire game, so I finally turned to him and told him to shut the hell up, this is 4th grade girls the ref doesn't care who wins this. He got mad at me at first but apologized later.

I was a little off track, but I agree that Fran needs to get in their faces like he was once in awhile. It will pay off for the team because they will take his attitude and get more firery, which they already are compared to last year.

Man you should come ref out at North Dodge in Iowa City. It is without question home of THE worst fans and coaches. It is disgusting. What ever happened to the players play, the coaches coach, parents watch/cheer and the refs ref? Parents and coaches who continually ride refs are an absolute disgrace and more importantly an embarrassment to their children.

I coach 5th girls in MN and on the whole, I have been very pleased with fans, parents and coaches. I can't normally hear the fans though, but my wife clues me in on anything interesting. ;)

On occasion I take exception with what an opposing coach says and fans as well. I've seen tourney coordinators talk to unruly fans too. I try hard not to address the referees, which when your winning is pretty easy (we are 18-2).

Our school has a code of conduct we make each player, coach and parent read and sign and that helps.

Funny and disgusting story from our Regional tourney last year. There was a funky rule about pressing that was diff than any tourney we'd played in. Our players and fans understood the rule, but one opposing mother evidently did not.

She was cursing a blue streak about it for most of the first half, sitting behind my wife. Eventually my wife turns around during halftime and begins to calmly explain the rule. The lady says "turn around and shut-up, I'm not getting in a fight already this morning!" (evidently fisticuffs are a regular part of her day!) :)

Her husband said something to her, and they left the gym. Interestingly enough, we did not see her again that day, although her level-headed husband was there the rest of the tourney.....

He took her to the Mens room and spanked her.

I coach at NDAC, first off the refs there leave much to be desired (if you are a ref, I apologize in advance..........some are decent, some are not), it's hard for kids to play when the refs cannot control a game and call it inconistently. Yes there are some bad apples (coaches and parents both), I'm happy to say our team and parents do not fall into the bad category.

18-14? Thoughts and prayers to you guys having to sit and watch your daughters play basketball throughout their careers

I think that is a totally fair assessment Chub. I will openly admit I am not the best ref in Iowa by any stretch. What I will say is that I could care less which team wins and I make every effort to call games consistently.

However, what people fail to realize is most refs at NDAC are roughly at the same level of the games they are reffing. It's like going to McDonald's and complaining that your cheese burger isn't up to par with the one you make on the grill at home.

I don't think it's hard for a 8-10 year old kid to play a rec game of basketball because of a ref.

So you're comparing the talent level on the Iowa Basketball team to a bunch of 7th grade girls? No argument here.

Agreed with yelling at the kids. I coach first and second graders in a church league (I have no kids, just a volunteer, and no we don't keep score (but I do)) and sometimes the kids get a little squirrely. I usually let most of it go, because they're young and we only practice for an hour. One day they were out of control. One stiff HEY! and slap of the ball and they didn't misbehave the rest of the practice and it was our best practice/followed by best game so far.

You are correct Sir. Only 20, college sophomore

You have a lot to learn & will understand so much more when you have kids. ;)

They change the way you look at a lot of things in life & what was important in your younger years will not be as important when you have kids.

I understand. I was just trying to be funny :(
