My 2011 notes for Kirk

Here are a few of my 2011 notes for Kirk.

1) Find a punt / kick returner who is not a starting DB. (Hint, hint, maybe one of the 8 RB's that don't see the field or possibly someone else who is fast). Lots of other teams do this, it's ok. (See OU)

2) Find a more efficient manner to get plays in to the QB. The other team knows what's coming, so just yell it out, no reason for secrecy.

3) On 3rd and 6, please send at least one WR on a route that is at least 6 yards.

4) Back to the passing game, please ask that all WR's be more than an arm's length from each other. Throwing to 2-3 WR's bunched up makes us very easy to cover.

5) The following are plays to consider: downfield pass, screen, called QB run, wheel route to RB, 2 minute offense, wildcat formation.

6) Play more than one RB. It's a new trend called depth.

Thanks cool quote quy. If only I had a nifty avatar and bad *** quote like you. Couldn't find a quote from Starship Troopers?

7. Send your best letter of recommendation to get KOK a head coaching job somewhere.
8. Get a offensive coordinator that runs an innovative offense that does not just include 10 plays on a matchbook.
9. Don't blow the DC hire.

Agree. Thanks for adding to the list. Number 7 is my favorite.

Sometimes I wonder if Tecmo Bowl was KOK's favorite NES game.

To elaborate on #1. Change SOMETHING on special teams. It gets so old hearing Ferentz admit that kick off/return teams are flawed....and then they look no different the next week, then he admits that something is flawed...and they look no different the following week, over and over and over. I wouldn't even mind if they performed worse one week if it looked like coach was trying something new to possibly improve the situation.

I agree re: the kick/punt return ... Especially on kick off returns we simply look slow. Do we simply not have speed on the roster? We look like we are just wanting to catch the ball and hope to run it back 5 or 10 yards

No one will take you seriously unless you change your name to hawkIfootball.

This all worked in '02, '03, '04, '08, '09......so basically over the last ten years we have been a 9-10 win team about half the time. Yet when we have a 7 win season, it is the because our coaches are terrible.

Some of you people need to use some critical thinking. We don't get top 25 talent in Iowa recruiting class wise, but half the time we are a top 10-20 caliber team. That is because of coaching, NOT because we get miraculously lucky half of the time over the last 10 years.

I find it ironic that you reference critical thinking, yet use none yourself. The lack of talent defense does not hold water. How many guys do we put in the NFL? I believe we are # 3 behind USC and OSU the past couple years, but a talent deficit is the reason we can't compete? If you used critical thinking, even occasionally, you would recognize that KF would rather lose his way, than win changing anything.

Seriously, we can't find a speedy guy who just might give us the chance for a big return now and then? How many teams use starting DB's to return kicks and punts? Lots to like about KF, but his lack of trust and innovation is holding the program back.

Let's face it. Kirk is just out of touch. That's not going to change. He's in his own little $4 million world. Can't blame him for not wanting to change anything.

What in the garden gnome are you talking about? Our records over those 3 years were 9-4, 11-2 (a Stanzi injury away from running the table), and 8-5 including 3 bowl wins and the schools first ever BCS victory. Only someone with a hookers greasy underpants for brains would consider that not competing.

And what on earth does the fact we used DBs to return kicks this year have to do with anything. Hyde has shown solid return skills as well as very good hands and JB was one of the best return guys in the B10 this year.

What a joke.

Wow.....I didn't say we don't have talent. It is talent though that is brought out by good coaching. They have a great strength and conditioning COACH. They teach fundamentals as well as any college football program in the county, this is evident as NFL teams say as much all the time.

You actually lack so much critical thinking that in your response, you proved my point. Players come into Iowa that aren't as highly regarded (mostly 3* and some 2* and 4*) yet they leave the program as NFL players. Much of that is because of great COACHING that they receive at Iowa.

Your New Years Resolution is off to a great start. Good stuff. Simply blackassic!

I think the OP might have been also talking about our kickoff coverage. We gave up many long returns this year.

Note to Kirk about trying something different, how about having your kickers practice kicking very high kicks that come down around the 15 or 20 yard line at about the same time the hawk defenders get there. Force the receivers to many times call a fair catch or this action can also mess up their blocking and timing. This can occasionally cause a turnover. Most years the hawks are very good at generating turnovers but not so much this year.

Bobby Bowden used to employ this type of kickoff because he had such fast, head hunters. Caused havoc with the receiving team.

This will be showing the coaches making an actual change to a play rather than just trying to see if your players can stay in their lanes week after week.

Look for a kicker that can kick the ball into the endzone consistentlyon kickoffs. After watching the Auburn game last night, that looked like a pretty good proposition--letting the opponents offense start on the 20 with no returns.
