MVP Cartwright/Basabe

Huge win on the road at Assembly and not to mention back to back B10 wins. I'm so excited and proud of this program. I it was a battle of the bottom of the B10 but to win at Assembly and in that enviroment when illannoy and minny were unable to win shows tremendous fight! I do not know where we would be without Cartwright and Basabe. Today was a team effort but without those two we have no consistant offense. Cartwright is by far the most underrated player in the B10. For those of you who say that he is not a legit PG, look at his numbers. His assist/turnover ratio is more than you can ask, especially when you consider he asked to score and create. It is very tough to find a pg that can do both. Not only that, but he plays with passion and in this game you could see that he wanted the ball and did not shy away from pressure situations. Yes, we have a long way to go, but this was huge Fran and the boys. They are learning how to win!

100% right! Cartwright has been a huge lift for us at the position we needed him the most.

Yeah I remember after the ISU game, I was saying Cartwright is far from a big ten pg and was a borderline waste of space. The strides he's taken this year he's turning into a pretty descent player. If Fran's behind this transformation we got ourselves a coach.

I confess that earlier in the year, I wasn't real impressed with Cartwright, but he has won me over with his recent play. He is SO much better now than he was a couple months ago. He's a legit Big Ten player.

Basabe.. What more can I say? The guy is a beast. He'll only get better and more consistent going forward.

Now if we could get Gatens and May to play a little ball we could pull a couple upsets down the stretch. Without Basabe and Cartwright we'd be somewhere with 3-4 wins and probably 0 fer in Big 10 play.

Gatens is averaging 14.1 ppg in Big Ten play, and just scored 19 on Wednesday. He had an off day today. It happens. May, you have a point on, even though he's been playing better the past few games.

For me the issue I have with Gatens are some of the decisions he makes with the ball. Taking poor shots, making bad passes. He is a scorer which I love but think he needs to not try and handle the ball so much.

Cartwright has been a blessing and is picking up the Big 10 pace quickly. Looks in control, handles the ball decently, and has good vision. When's the last time we had a guard that didn't look hurried and pressured in trying to make things happen......or continually lose the ball in the lane when he drove to the basket?

"The Traffic Cop" seems to fit well.

......how 'bout the two long precision passes to May for the dunks. The team looked good, played hard, and stayed focused.

Cartright can get his own shot, its fantastic. In basketball, sometimes you need a guy who can just beat his man and score. Cartright did that twice in final mintues and took Hull's lunch. That step-back Jumper to win the game was a thing of beauty. Cartright has a nice cross-over, step-back, as well as a post-up turn-around.

If we can find one more player who can create his own shot from the wing next year, as well as another big we will win some games.

Basabe gets all the love and attention (and he deserves it), but Iowa's MVP is Cartwright. He is the only guy who can consistently create and he gets his teammates involved. With Cully's injury Cartwright was forced into the spot before he was probably ready, but he has made huge strides and he makes this team go.

+1 . He's made great strides since start of season . We'd be in real jam if we didn't have him on roster. I see Payne being player coming off bench rest of his career at Iowa .

I agree next year Cully will be the back up PG. He kind of got wally pipped...

You can see that Cartwright and Basabe play with a swagger that the others just don't really have. When the going get's tough and there are plays that need to be made they both want the ball in their hands. There is a confidence that they want to be the guy taking the important shot and don't care if they fail.

Cartwright has come so far in terms of playing more of a distributing PG role. Earlier this season he was really only a scoring PG. He still gets ahead of himself at time and you wonder what the heck he is doing, but he has really, really improved.

This shows people what guys who can create off the dribble do for you.

Gatens play yesterday was not an aberration. In Big Ten play, Gatens is shooting almost fifty-three percent from the field & scores 18.6 ppg at home. He has not scored less than 14 points at home.

In contrast, Gatens is shooting under thirty-four percent & averages 10.3 ppg on the road. He has not scored more than 13 points on the road. Further, he attempts 10.2 shots per game at home & 11.3 shots on the road.

Every Big Ten road game is an off-day for Gatens.
