Iowa Hawkeyes at Michigan State Spartans: Preview, prediction, TV Info - CBSSports.com

They have MSU by 4. I hope our D will hold them. I think the O will finally get going through the air. From article:

The game comes down to: Whether Iowa can stop Bell. If Iowa's defense, which has let up just 17.4 ppg, continues to stifle opponents, the Hawkeyes' offense could grind out a close game with Weisman dominating the ball. If Bell gets the Spartans an early lead, it will be difficult for James Vandenberg to mount a comeback against Michigan State's stellar pass defense.

I think you are correct. They'd better have those reads down. It will be interesting to see if MSU can stop the Weisman train. It might be wise to try and open up the playbook early...little no huddle early....little shotgun.....etc.

If we go hurry-up, MSU will just play hurt after every down.

A win at Sparty Stadium would be great. I can't stand the way they play. Also, I believe Bell is a bit overrated. He is good but I don't know if I have seen great from him. The hurdles were cool but he's the size to do it. I just hope our D can handle their O.

My hope is that Iowa will keep it competitive. If Iowa wins this game the expectations will sky rocket and then if the Hawks don't win the Big Ten Title game AND the Rose Bowl, Ferentz and staff and this football team is the worse ever.

If Iowa loses this game, even if close... Ferentz and staff and this football team is the worse ever.

Hey it's a lose... lose. Even if Iowa wins... wins. On this board and others posters will ***** and complain. Posters will call for Ferentz's job, claim he is over paid and is a nepotist.

Have I mentioned that Vandenberg is waaaay over rated and Rudock should replace him?

Not me. Looking for a great college game... only 2 weeks into the Big Ten schedule and the future is unwritten.

I would like to think that I would be surprised if I saw them do this at home. On the road, in a hostile environment, in front of people that already hate you is one thing. But to do it at home, in front of your friends, family, fellow students is a whole different monster.
But, It is Michigan State… So anything is possible.
Do work Herky!

What I like about this match up and how I came to my prediction is: MSU likes to blitz. If our whole O can block like they did in the MN game, people will really start to see what a power run game looks like. I would have to go back and rewatch it to get an exact number, but I know MN tried to blitz the corner or even both at the same time and they did it often, we were able to make them pay for it. You can make people pay for blitzing with a run just as easy as a pass. So what many here fail to see is what Iowa is trying to do. Blitz and you pay, dont and you pay. Now MN came into that game leading the B10 in take aways. So the game plan for that game was well thought out and executed very well. How do you win games? Run the ball and play D. I am very impressed with how well they are executing what has been installed. This O, if they can continue to improve is going to be very very and one more VERY hard to stop. The guys on D are young upfront, but seem to have taken it upon themselves to improve every day. I dont think any unit wants to be the one who is falling behind.

I am not sure why people complain about laying down to slow a hurry-up offense. Until they change the rules to stop doing this, it seems like the obvious smart play. People like to ridicule the behavior, but it is within the rules and I would coach it as well.

The way to stop that behavior is to run right over the sub they bring in. However, if they have the depth necessary to run that system effectively, you are out of luck.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for a rule change - perhaps after second time going down, you need to stay out a number of plays - but while the rules allow it, it is just bad coaching not to use it.

Any other "lawyer ball" tactic you wish to see employed? :)

MSU will load, blitz, etc. IF we have prepared well, we'll see some good passes in the flat to our RBs. If THEY prepared well, we will stay in the game.

Vandy will be a key, but our in-game adjustments will be more so.

Good look at the upcoming game. Not mentioned but weather may be a factor Saturday and could have an effect on passing games for both teams. I'm looking for lots of dropped balls on both sides.

If Sparty commits 8 or 9 in the box to stop the run then the short passing game underneath to the outside is going to be open. Got to say it again - it's time for the TEs to step up. Going to be tough to see improvement there if the weather does become a factor but, if that happens to be the case, production staying about the same would be an improvement especially in the hostile E.L. environment.

A physical D is a must, Bell is good but not unstopable. Their O line lacks depth and we need to take advantage of our D line rotation and wear them down. They may start fast but burn out down the stretch so we have to keep it close. Vandy's head has got to be right and Meyer's foot has to be true to pull off a win.

Need I say the season rides on this game?

I would have my defense carry a sharp object onto the field and puncture the ball after every tackle to slow down the game. Afterall, it's just bad coaching not to use every advantage.
I would tell my scoreboard operator to shut the clock off and pretend there is a malfunction.
During night games we could turn the lights out to slow the game. Hey, use every advantage right?

There is such a thing as ethics. I wouldn't coach anyone to do something unethical to win a game.
