Mr. Davis and Fran

Is this basketball thread?I'm checking my laptop to make sure it's not jumping into psychology 101 thread

Lol, must be Christmas break or pretty close. I know my daughter flies home from college this Saturday. There are some people who must have way too much time on their hands.

Well, seeing as how some of you think Mr. Davis couldn't recruit, you must feel he was one helluva coach to get us to all those NCAA's without any talent.

Hey guys guess what. I love the Dr. And I love Fran and I don't compare the two. I think that's ok.

Mr. Davis is a fine man, no question. However if the strength of schedule would have been used in picking teams then it is now many of TD's teams would not have made the tournament. I can remember watching the selections show and hoping the Hawks would be in. I believe one of the reasons Bowsby got rid of Tom was because Tom insisted on a weak schedule. Someone posted an analysis of Tom's record in the Big and it was not very favorable. If I remember right O'Conner, Miller, and Olsen all had better records in the Big. Also I think Alfords was close.

So the AD keeps KF because????

1989-90 and 1993-94 were aberrations. 89-90 was a disaster due to the injury problems of Bullard and Ingram, and the well-intentioned but nonetheless misguided eligibility policies of Rawlings that put Thompson and Garner off the team after the first semester. 93-94 would have been very, very different were it not for the death of Street, and the academic loss of Smith.

Alford had nothing like Davis's record. The postseason trips (thanks to the Big Ten Tournament) make the seasons look better than they were -- the conference records show the true level of those seasons.

For what it's worth, Alford and Davis were both undermined by their recruiting. Too many talented (or sometimes just average) players with character problems. Hopefully Fran will avoid this pitfall. No police reports or academic casualties.

Tom Davis get and unfair tag as a poor recruiter IMHO. He may not have loved it and he my have failed to take a step that other coaches didn't but the fact remains that all but one or two of Davis' classes were good to very good. Davis also seemed to be the last asked to leave the living room of a highly touted recruit or two it seemed like every year. Guys like Lafrentz, Deon Thomas, Jahidi White, Samiki Walker ect.. I think he picked up this tag when he lost out on some very highly rated instate guys.

Maybe he lacked some closing power. Who knows for sure, but he was working some very big recruits wether he liked recruiting or not. He also landed his share of great kids and classes. Guys like Murray, Kingsbury Street, Settles, Woolridge, Henderson, Davis, Range ect..

Davis' biggest issues, in my eyes wasn't his ability to recruit or develop what he had, it was that durng is tenure, shortly after the Marble/Armstrong class graduated, he bagan to loose players for one reason or another on a pretty regular basis. That bug has never left this program since the late eighties.

n short, Fran and Mr. Davis have a ton of simularities, right down to recruiting. Fran can seperate himself from other coaches here at Iowa simply by doig what he's doing froma coaching and recruiting stand point, and keeping his guys on campus until they graduate.

Well, seeing as how some of you think Mr. Davis couldn't recruit, you must feel he was one helluva coach to get us to all those NCAA's without any talent.

When he started, everyone thought that TD was a great coach but needed Raveling's recruits to win (ever heard that George should have been hired back as TD's recruiting coordinator?). At the end of his career, people thought of TD as a recruiter (because of the names listed above) that couldn't coach (because he could "only" get to the second round of the NCAA's). I always thought it was funny how things changed in people's mind.

Until Fran brings in very athletic 6-6 swing men and Woodbury develops, I'll with hold opinion on this. Except for 2 local kids who wanted to play together and had been maybe over ranked credentials, Fran has brought in mostly kids that we compete with Boston College, Illinois State, and mid's for.

2013 Peter Jok is going to be a huge steal. Without his injury Iowa would be competeing with the likes of Duke, UNC, Kansas, and UK. He's not 100% yet but he is killing it so far this season.

Not really. AW is good. He's not an athletic deal maker. Woody is a project in motion. We will see. Maybe I'll be foolish, but what I implied that his recruiting isn't proven yet. It's foolish to say it is w/o proof.

You kind of just proved the point that you were trying to disprove... Big time programs were watching Clemons's games for the people who he was playing with. He wasn't the most flashy player and didn't score all the points but Fran saw what he brought to the team. It is a lot easier to recruit when your program has a recent history of being sucessful. What Fran is doing takes a lot more time and a true eye for talent.

Agree. Fran is flipping every rock and looking under every nook and cranny for overlooked talent now and mixing them with some of the blue chippers he's been able to get like AW, MG and Uthoff.

The guys like Clemmons, Basabe and White who were overlooked in high school have added their own certain toughness to the team.

If the idiots in our compliance department weren't idiots and if the ICPD didn't stalk athletes in IC, Alford would still be at Iowa and we would have four or five Big Ten Champion banners and two new-ish Final Four banners in Carver.
