Most Disappointing Iowa Team Ever?

Can't remember any team, even the Lick teams, so non-competitive! So yes, this in my 28 years watching Iowa basketball is right up there with most disappointing. Is there some internal strife? Late in the game nobody even bothered to set a pick or screen for JBo. What's the deal with that? Down 10 with over a minute to go and JBO has to drive because nobody is screening. Honesty I've said it before, just get better. Forget about the record. We just got to figure who should get the minutes.

Funny you should bring this up. In a private message to another forum member I first told him that this is the most disappointing team I can remember watching. Then I told him I noticed one certain player not playing in harmony with JBo and I sensed their might be some friction between the JBo and him.

Is there a realistic path to the tournament next year? See the thread I started Fran conundrum. I really don’t think there is.

Wieskamp better be damn good that’s all I can say because other than him what’s going to change anything? Fran’s son?

in his last five seasons, he's taken Iowa to three NCAA Tournaments and within a whisker of two others. He’s earned the right to have a bad season. Bad coaches don't do that. Firing him now is not even an option.

People forget in Tom Davis’ fourth season in 1989-90, Iowa was 12-16 overall and 4-14 in Big Ten play. Iowa lost some of the best players in school history — which Davis didn’t recruit — and the Hawkeyes dropped eight of their last nine games. But that struggling team turned into an NCAA squad the next three seasons.

I would agree with this to an extent. If we go “o for” in the B1G this year it would very difficult for Barta to retain Fran. That’s not likely to happen but if we did go winless in the B1G that would be a first in my lifetime. It would be different if we were barely losing games and being competitive but that’s just not the case. We are still losing by ten points even when the other team is having a bad game and that is very concerning. However, I agree with you in that you shouldn’t fire a coach for one bad year after he has shown some success. Going winless in the B1G would make it really tough on Barta though. I can’t imagine a winless B1G season. That’s would be horrendous! I don’t think that will happen but if it did YIKES!!!!!

Leistekow said in his piece last night that 'A prominent, recent former Hawkeye recently said in his four years under McCaffery, they rarely practiced defense.' Sound coaching philosophy Fran.

One of the biggest let downs I ever felt in Iowa b-ball history was the 06 team. We beat Ohio St to win the Big 10 Tournament. We had huge momentum going into the NCAA tourney and were playing close to home up in Michigan, only to lay a huge egg in the first round with a loss from some scrub team called Northwestern Louisana St in the first round on St Patricks Day.

For me, this is without a doubt the most disappointing Hawkeye team ever. After last year's team and only losing Peter Jok, I just assumed they could keep the momentum going.

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I predicted this team at 23-8 and a NCAA 5 seed. Now that is some big time disappointment.

this year ranks up there with that recker/evans team that alford took to the NIT.

That one jumps out at me the most. That team was pre-season Top 10 and ended up with a first round NIT loss. Hard to trump that one. I went to the B&G Blowout that year and the place was packed to the rafters. Never saw another season with so much hype end with such a thud.

This year is up there, though. I thought this team could be an NCAA team, but not necessarily a high seed. Just that they are SO bad.

That Recker/Evans year was much worse than this. That team had both national hype and fan hype going into that season and fell on their faces....hard

I think the expectations for this year were our own doing. There was no national buzz about Iowa basketball at all. I think most of us had Iowa finishing in the top half of the Big Ten, and the media picked Iowa to finish 9th. Turns out everyone was wrong and we're worse than Rutgers.

I'm with you as far as that NCAA tournament by itself being the biggest letdown of my lifetime. But that team, for the season, still met expectations and it was still a fun year. Just that dratted NWST game, puts a cloud over it all. I can't think of 2005-06 without first thinking of that one game... 1st round NCAA upsets happen every year, and it was our turn, unfortunately. :(

If that's seriously true and not exaggerated, I'm all for firing Fran today.

I think the biggest hole on the team is Moss's role. If we get average out of his position next year, we can be a tourney team. Either Dailey or Wieskamp will need to fill that role

I think it is difficult to answer the question...the fan base is numb, apathetic, disengaged...becoming like the team...

Moss looks really good in small bursts and then just disappears for the rest of the half. Sometimes I just want to see what he'd do with 15 shots a game.

Wieskamp is going to have a lot of pressure put on him next year to be the savior. Guess we'll see how he handles it

Well to be fair the only hype for Iowa basketball was within this state. I remember everybody thinking we were going to out perform national expectations.

Turns our those without the black and gold glasses had a better feel for our team.

Half of the time when Moss looks good, he still looks bad. Deep, out of rhythm 2s early in the shot clock. 3s with his foot on the line. Out of control transition where he still finishes. I swear he is always doing the opposite of what looks like the right basketball play. Maybe it's just me.

It's not hard to believe. We show more effort trying to hurry an inbound pass after giving up an easy basket than we do the entire time on the defensive end.

Luke Recker and Reggie Evans as seniors was far more disappointing IMO. The talent on this roster...other than Baer...are freshmen and sophomores IMO. I am more forgiving of young teams.
