More Nebbie Dysfunction

So, who are the specific coaches who have denied a Penn St job offer?
What I have seen reported is the guy from BYU, Huepel from Tennessee said not interested, Rhule allegedly turned them down by some reports but not sure how true that is, DeBoer is reported as saying not interested. It's rumored that Urban was interested but after stating some of his wants/demands for NIL they said no. Also rumors that Jeff Brohm had talks with them weeks ago.

I haven't been in the room or know anyone so I can't say for sure just what I have seen reported.

Wow. What a mess. They were the first to fire their coach. One would think they'd have a plan figured out as it seemed they made the move to get ahead of all other programs with a search. Baffling!

There's essentially a zero chance Rhule turned them down. That job is his wet dream.

It's much more likely that was told or sensed that he was not high on their list, then signed his extension.

Some of it is arrogance. Thinking that their program was so elite that it would be enticing to so many coaches. As Fry mentioned, someone like Matt Campbell (if he decided to jump ship) would be run out of town if he won 21 games over 3 years. Much like Nebraska, I think Penn State's fan base is probably suffering a little delusion.

We are in a different world today with NIL. The level of financial investment puts even more pressure on programs to win and win now. The blue bloods will survive due to financial backing, but other programs that are bit on the fringe that had success maybe need to rethink their philosophy.

You throw in their recruiting class is 123rd (tied with Harvard) and they had no early signings, and likely players entering the portal, Penn State could be circling the drain. Which won't hurt my feelings.

That is what was reported but I find it very hard to believe it to be true as well. Same with a lot of teh reports out there as to what is true or not who is to say since we are not involved. I am sure there are a lot more names of people we don't hear about as well. Everyday it drags on though is not good for PSU and I think it is great

I don't believe Penn State had any recruits sign early and have the currently 129th ranked recruiting class. (Iowa is #23?). Franklin has already flipped 7 recruits from Penn State to VaTech. Unless, they have some dark horse big name coach they are waiting to hire, things are only getting murkier for Penn State. EXTEND FERENTZ NOW! Lol.
As it stands right now on 247, PSU is 150th in recruiting, right behind #149 South Dakota State.

Even better!
I think there is also risk that is Smith doesn't get the job some others jump ship. Reports state he is very popular within the players, staff, and admin. Would Terry Smith have the balls to turn them down if offered the job? You have to believe there is some level of disrespect he is feeling as his name is not brought up except in passing.

He was very close to Franklin from reports I hear. Maybe he bails for VaTech? He seems to be getting the bridesmaid treatment. AND if they do hire someone else, he may not be guaranteed a position. I'm guessing he might have a contingency plan.

Someone on twitter said PSU had 24 commits when J-Frank got canned and as of signing day they had 2. And those 2 weren't part of the original 24.

Maybe it's been in the works the whole time....

Muahhh ha ha ha haaahhhhh

With some of the reporting going on about Sexton and trying to burn Kraft and if they are true, this may not be that far fetched and would be diabolical.

James Franklin

Cautionary tale poster children. Watching these three programs slow-burn--especially PSU and WI because they had 15 years of seeing nebraksa implode--is real funny.

I have no idea about the 2 they signed, but they're both instate kids. Could be their dream to play for PSU no matter what.

You know who else has emphasized stability? Oregon. They have FIRED one coach since 1977 (Helfrich was let go after going 11-2, 13-2, 9-4, and then 4-8). They have had others leave for other positions (Chip Kelly for the NFL, Cristobal for Miami, and Taggart for FSU). Their replacements have mostly been internal over those 48 years (Bellotti, Kelly, Helfrich, Cristobal), with only Taggart and Lanning being hired externally.

It sure helps to have the deepest pockets in the game, but we should not overlook how patientily and intelligently they have built this thing.

This is why Smith shouldn't be promoted to HC. I get that his future is up in the air, but just a an alumni whose able to recruit he should have been able to save a few regional recruits.

Hard disagree. Doesn't matter who you are, if a recruit has no idea who the coach is going to be or whether the guy recruiting him is going to be around there's no way they'd be smart to sign. It's like asking someone to buy a car they've never seen and have no idea what the make, model, or miles are. Exactly why PSU not having someone in place by signing day was such a disastrous thing.
